One does not travel to Page without kayaking across Lake Powell, and I declare this as one who -- until today -- had never gone kayaking before! We were pleased to see that aquatic activities were still available despite present health circumstances, and Lake Powell Paddleboards and Kayak (which I shall now refer to as LPPK) was open for business.
COVID Disclaimer
The staff were masked and protected, hand sanitizer was available, and as reasonably as possible, everybody was practicing social distancing. The majority of the customers I observed abided by the same practice. Continue to stay safe, dear friends, and be confident that LPPK is doing their part to ensure the same.
Arrival & Rental Experience
We arrived before 3 P.M., and one of the staff members greeted us with a warning that they closed at 6. If we did not return the kayak by 6, he said, we would have to return it at 9 the next morning with a $10 late charge. Challenge accepted.
We filled out our liability waivers on one of the iPads along the porch. A kindly gentleman at the front asked for our reservation information, and after a bit of confusion, we clarified that we had not made reservations -- we had just got here and wanted to rent on the spot.
** Pro-tip 1 ** Make a reservation! We were lucky to get a tandem kayak on the 4th of July of all days. On similarly busy days, you'd do well to get your name down while supplies last.
We secured our rental for $54 inside the store. Our cashier was truly kind (she offered us popsicles!) and made some great suggestions about the best spots to kayak, as well as the ideal time to head back before closing hour. She also offered some strategies on how to brave the chop from inevitable speed boats and jetskis (how we wish we remembered what she said!). Meanwhile, the staff loaded the kayak and supplied the seats, life jackets, and paddles.
The Equipment
I will probably get around to reviewing Lake Powell itself, but suffice it to say, we had a blast. The equipment was perfect for our purposes. Despite our brazen inexperience, we did not capsize! After our adventure, loading the kayak onto the car was a breeze.
** Pro-tip 2 ** If you are unfamiliar with securing a kayak to your vehicle, take some photos after the staff loads it, or even ask them for tips at the store. It may sound simple enough, but we saw some folks at Lake Powell struggling magnificently with their kayaks. They are easier to unload, I should imagine.
The Return
We returned at 5:30 P.M. with plenty of time to spare. The staff swiftly removed the kayak and collected our seats, life jackets, and paddles. As all our paperwork was long accounted for, there wasn't anything else for us to do; we were good to go.
Verdict
An overwhelming 5/5 stars for LPPK, for their professional and courteous service, and their top-tier equipment. When we next return to Page for another exhilarating ride along Lake Powell, there is no question as to where we will be renting from. 'Til next time!
