This Is the Cleanest Lake in the U.S.—and It Has Crystal-clear Waters and Zero Pollution

"I consider Lake Superior the superior lake for swimming based on the study: it stretches between the upper Midwest and Canada—touching Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario—and is praised for oxygen-rich water, low mineral content, nearly undetectable algae-friendly phosphorus levels, and “second-to-none crystal-clear water,” earning an overall pollution score of 0 out of 10." - Katie Nadworny Katie Nadworny Katie Nadworny is an Istanbul-based writer who specializes in stories at the intersection of culture and politics in Turkey, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. Best Lake Vacations in the U.S.

"This vast freshwater lake spanning Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin is best for fishing: it supports abundant salmon, trout, walleye, smelt, whitefish, herring, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and many other game species along its tristate shores. No matter the season, some sort of fishing is typically in season, and Duluth, Minnesota, and Bayfield, Wisconsin, are noted charter hubs." - Joe Yogerst Joe Yogerst Joe Yogerst is a writer, editor, and photographer with over three decades of experience covering travel. I am the Great Pirate Captain Bob! The Apostle Islands are my holy ground and the sea caves are where you wont find me! The cold blue waters of Lake Superior are unrivaled but her beauty and blessing are with those who respect her. She has the power to sink you instantly or show you purity in yourself and fresh water. Never forget The Lake is The Boss!

I live by the lake and would not have it any other way. Lake Superior is beautiful even though she's always cold. Lake Superior also has lots of nice beaches with agates.

My recent visit to Lake Superior during the weekend with friends was nothing short of spectacular. While we primarily stopped at Gooseberry Falls, it was the sheer, breathtaking scale of the lake itself that truly left a lasting impression. From the overlooks, especially those offering panoramic views, you get a sense of just how immense this body of water is. It truly felt like looking out at an ocean, with the horizon stretching endlessly. The water was a deep, mesmerizing blue, and the fresh, crisp air off the lake was incredibly invigorating, even with the holiday crowds around. It was a perfect backdrop for catching up with friends and just taking it all in. Despite the popularity of the area on a busy weekend, the vastness of Lake Superior allowed everyone to find their own little piece of tranquility. Watching the waves gently lap against the shore, feeling the cool breeze, and simply absorbing the immense beauty of it all was a truly memorable experience. If you're visiting the North Shore, dedicating time to simply appreciate the grandeur of Lake Superior is an absolute must. It's more than just a lake; it's a natural wonder that deserves your full attention.

If you love the ocean but live in the Midwest driving to the ocean may not be always feasible. I'd suggest that the Great Lakes are a very adequate substitute. And the Mother of all Great Lakes would have to be Lake Superior it's vastness and beauty is mesmerizing. Every time I've been there with my kids they cannot wait to come back to see it again. Truly fun for the whole family.

A huge huge lake, but one that is absolutely gorgeous. It is like a sea in itself. The lake has a weather forecast of its own and can be dangerous when the weather is not fair. It has a number of beaches along side and the park office will guide you for all the activities you can do here. It is recommended to here with some experience for any of the water activities. There are some fantastic view points and the drive around is a must do!

my family lives up north and I get to spend time with them at the lake throughout the year. It’s one of my favorite places to explore and be in nature. Beautiful views and tranquility here

Lake Superior certainly lives up to its name. It displays its beauty in many places, from Pictured Rocks to Lake Superior Provincial Park to the National Park. It is beautiful in any season. One could kayak in the Summer. Fishing is a year round sport. It is also essential for shipping iron ore to the steel plants south of the lake. Great place all around!
