On the Grid : Lamb on Chapel

"Roll all your petty problems up into a little ball and toss those bad boys away, because it’s time for a food coma. An institution both by day and late into the night, Lamb on Chapel won’t disappoint those in search of inner peace and a full belly. Not spiritually ready to tackle the lamb? Don’t fret, they do the same with chicken." - Blueboat

Lamb on chapel serves the classic Australian style souvalaki. a must have if you are a lamb (or chicken) lover. their fire pit ensures teh meat is cooked to perfection with the amazing charcoal flavor. overloaded with meat and a good balance of lettuce, tomato and onion and their yogurt sauce.

The employees and venue were great but unfortunately the mixed HSP I ordered was the worst I’ve ever had. The chicken is literally just roasted chicken, I had a few bites where I had little bits of chicken cartilage in it and it was absolutely horrible. I’ve never experienced cartilage in any of my HSP’s over the last 10 years. The lamb was ok, it was a little Bit tasteless and very over cooked but edible, I would recommend staying away from the chicken here because it’s just roast chicken, does not taste or look like proper kebab shop Chicken at all. It’s mushy, no flavour and obviously the quality of the chicken is so poor where bits of cartilage are found in it. The reviews on this place are decent which I assume are for the souvlakis and other dishes but at least for a HSP, I would rate it 1/10. For 19.50$ it’s honestly laughable. Sorry guys but you need to do better if you’re charging almost 20$ for a regular sized HSP with low quality chicken.

This place is iconic in my eyes and it's real shame that it isn't as busy as it should be, lamb Souv was very nice ordered without lettuce and onion, pita was perfect. Would definitely return for another round when I'm in the area. $19 for a Souv is average going price around.

I recently visited LOC and had the chance to try their lamb and chicken with Greek salad. The lamb was an absolute winner, tender and juicy, leaving me craving more. However, I must admit that the chicken fell short, as it lacked the flavour I was hoping for. As for the salad, it had a lovely taste, but I did notice that it seemed a bit older, possibly due to my late visit around 7:30 pm when the restaurant was winding down for the day. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant, and I appreciated the cleanliness of both the premises and the tables. The ample seating arrangements were a definite plus, ensuring a comfortable dining experience for all patrons. The customer service was commendable, with attentive staff making the dining experience enjoyable. Overall, my visit was satisfactory, and I look forward to returning to try other dishes on their menu.

Now I haven’t been to this place since I used to roll outta Chasers back in the day. We found ourselves needing a quick bite last night to went here. Loved our kebabs. Delish. (They’ve gone up considerably since I was there last - $19 just for the kebab - but I guess they’re prob just reflecting rent prices 😂). I had no idea this shop had a whole section down the back to eat. Also, the other food in the display looked amazing. Looked like top quality homemade food.

Tasty souvlaki, very succulent and full of flavour. Price is not bad for what you get, and good fillings.

A friend told me about this place way back in 2016. He’s moved back to Taiwan but still raves about their lamb – he misses it so much that it’s a regular topic of conversation when we catch up. It’s always made me curious, and I finally had the chance to give it a try yesterday. I got takeaway: the original lamb and galaktoboureko. The guy working there was super sweet and even threw in a baklava on the house. Such a nice touch! When I got home and dug in, I instantly understood why my friend is still such a fan. The flavors were unreal. The lamb… oh wow, the lamb – full of flavor. And the desserts? Geez, the desserts! So rich, sweet, and satisfying. I'll definitely be going back for more! P.S. Lamb on Malvern ain't Lamb on Chapel.

Ordered the original lamb souvlaki The meat was cooked well nice and tender full of charcoal flavour, salads were very fresh and had good flavour, the bread is something special in itself also has a great texture and flavour thats hard to come by and the garlic sauce is well made and has the right kind of garlic flavour profile. This place doesn’t muck around!

Yelp
Amazing food, warm service. I felt like family as soon as I walked in. I recommend a plate piled with delicious lamb and fresh salad. Cozy and fabulous Greek dining experience. Go!

Yelp
Ugh. Worst falafel wrap I've ever had in Melbourne, possibly anywhere in my life. Tasted like it came right out of a freezer (via a microwave.) Ditto for their fries. We ordered a small for the fries and they were so gross we had to douse them with tomato sauce before they were even remotely edible. Definitely tasted like freezer fries. Oh well. There aren't many options late at night on a Wednesday (we'd gone to a gig that didn't finish till 10:30pm) so I guess beggars can't be choosers. The place was also kinda dirty that late on a weeknight, with trash left on tables and the only patrons being groups of young dudes who'd obviously had a few to drink before coming here. You'd have to be drunk to think this food was any good, I'm afraid! On the plus side, the service was super friendly. But yeah. Go to Lord of the Fries instead.

Yelp
Miss this place so much. Lived in Australia with my hubby and we frequent often after late nights. We now live in Los Angeles and can't wait to go back one of these days.

Yelp
The lamb looks freakin awesome!! I must say, each time I passed this place in the past, I thought I was passing a meat market similar to what I might have seen during my tour of duty in New Delhi: a halal meat market selling lamb and other bits....boy was I wrong! Upon entering I see an amazing rotisserie slammed with lamb! The view was incredible and I could not stop looking at it! I knew I would be enjoying a delicious Souvlaki stuffed ONLY with lamb and a thick garlic sauce - yep, meat alone is the way to eat this fantastic work of art! The other important point to mention here is the only way to eat this puppy is standing - the souvlaki is a generous size and I found it easy to eat standing at the bar...yes, for those more experienced eaters of such goodies, there are tables and a tv, sporting footie on Saturday! All I have to say, the experience was awesome and I was so damn tempted to eat a second. Gladly, reason won out and I ordered a side of fries to finish the experience off.

Yelp
There is no better site on a beautifully drunken summer's night than the white clouds of smoke that rise from the chimney of Lambs. As your nose leads the way you know that you are in for a treat. Slowly roasted the amazingly good souvlaki is best enjoyed with both lamb and chicken, smothered with garlic and chilli sauce. The meat is some of the finest in town, I don't actually know this for sure as I have only eaten here when drunk but I do know that it is dam fine and a must at any time of the night after a couple of drinks. I don't know why you would go to KFC or Hungry Jacks when this is available.

Yelp
Best Souvlakis in Melbourne! The above is not a mean feat to achieve. Lamb on Chapel truly have the best Souvlakis in Melbourne. Don't be put off by the less than glamorous interiors, the food here is to die for. Have been back 4 times ever since we tried the platter. So much food for 3 people! Value for money and they use real beef/chicken/lamb. Never dried up and very tender, bread is made right there. I cannot fault Lamb on Chapel on bit. They are even open quite late. Had a hunger for Maccas at 2 in the morning and my Fiancé went for a walk looking for food and was surprised they were still open. Run don't walk, you wont ever regret it!

Yelp
I ate here about 7 years ago and haven't gotten over it. Sydney should be ashamed to not have more of these.

Yelp
Bad attitude and no humus. These guys treat you like you're a drunk nightclub patron stumbling in at 3am. Even when you walk in at noon on the weekend looking for a Kabab. I asked for humus and he looked at me like I'm stupid for asking and said "nah we don't have humus we are Lebanese". a. Didn't the Lebanese invent humus? b. I care about your ancestry about as much as you care about mine. You're a kebab shop, get some humus! Finally the kebabs are expensive for what they are. Kebab and drink was $15, and wasn't that good. I will only go back as a last resort.

Yelp
Hungry at midnight? Or just need a snack after a great night out? Lamb on Chapel is just the place. I remember my first experience at Lamb on Chapel years ago after a midnight movie. Besides the fact that I had just finished a huge bag of popcorn, I decided to try the famous souvlaki. Even though I wasn't very hungry - the flavour was delish and since then, it's always been a winner! Besides the fact that this place opens late and is a favourite with after hours crowds, the souvlakis at Lamb on Chapel really are very good. Albeit, a little greasy - but that's what makes them good! In fact, this is one of the places I bring overseas guests to just so they can get their fill without paying an arm and a leg. My favourite is the lamb souvlaki with the lot. Okay I'm a big eater and I love that they have hot chilli sauce as well. It helps that the staff know exactly how to pack in a kebab so you can eat it without having everything fall apart. For the less seasoned souvlaki eater - You're meant to fold over the paper and wrap downwards as you eat. Do not attempt to take the souvlaki roll out of the paper or you will end up with most of it on the floor and not in your mouth.

Yelp
First, I love lamb. I was so excited to find a place that believes in their lamb enough to include in the name of the restaurant. Anyways, I first tried it when I first arrived in town. I ordered the Lamb Original (souvlaki). It was amazing. The lamb meat was tender and juicy. The other parts like the sauce, tomatoes and onions were good. I then went back two more times. In both those times, most of the meat was exterior meat with crusty skin. I was disappointed. I even shared this with owner (I believe). Instead of providing tender replacement meat, he suggested that most people really like the exterior meat.

Yelp
We went in for a late-night bite after a night (and afternoon) of boozing around town. I shared a lamb gyro with my husband, and it was more than enough to fill us up. LOC is generous with the meat and toppings, and their pita bread is pretty tasty. Definitely a worthwhile stop!

Yelp
I've had some pretty tasty souvlakis while sober, and lamb's is one of them. However, I've found it to be a little inconsistent. Sometimes you'll get a lot of gristle and other time you won't. Also I find that it's a little too small and a little too expensive.

Helen F.

Yelp
I used to think that Lambs had the best souvlakis in Melbourne but after my experience today, I'm not so sure anymore! I think it may have been a quiet day (Australia Day) because the lamb rotating on the spit was looking a bit burnt on one end. I ordered the lamb and the proprietor who happened to be working this afternoon cut the meat off in huge chunks without breaking the meat into smaller pieces and cut the lamb partially off the burnt end. I had a really hard time trying to eat the very large pieces of lamb and had to throw away a fair few burnt pieces. As you can guess, the meat was very dry as well. What a disappointment!!

Yelp
I still dream about this place. I've never had lamb this good before or after experiencing Lamb on Chapel! So good! I work in Downtown Los Angeles and have kebabs, shawarmas, and gyros all over the place. None of them are even close to LOC. If I ever make it back to Melbourne, I will have to come back here for the best souvlaki I've ever had!! It's not about the service here, it's about the food.

Yelp
Flavorful combination of succulent meat, garlic sauce and soft soft bread. Should not be missed!

Becky S.

Yelp
Best souvlaki I've had in Melb. Little bit pricey but well worth it for quantity and deliciousness. We also got a dip platter to share, still don't know what half the dips were, but have considered going back with plastic containers and asking to buy a few tubs of them.

Yelp
Such beautiful tasty food and wonderful service. Each time we come down from Sydney, this is the first place we eat.
