On the Grid : Lamplighter, Addison Street Café

"Housed in a former derelict gas station, Lamplighter didn’t just help usher coffee culture to Richmond, it planted a seed of vibrancy in an overlooked corner of the city. The baristas are that winning trifecta of talented, knowledgable, and approachable as they serve up pourovers, lavender lattes, and cold brew by the gallon. The kitchen is just as welcoming, with sandwiches, salads, and sweet stuff for all types of eaters (even those with allergies). Now a fast-growing empire with multiple locations, Lamplighter was one of the first to turn hundreds of Richmonders into coffee connoisseurs." - Mobelux

Nice spot for a coffee and some reading/working. Line was long but moved fast, and I only ordered a drip coffee. They had an 8oz size which was great! I sat inside by the front window and enjoyed a leisurely hour reading and catching up on some work. There’s outdoor seating too but it was a bit chilly for me. I can see why this was recommended to me!

Google
This coffee shop has a very grungy and cozy atmosphere. It feels like more of the classic Richmond hipster vibe (as someone who grew up here). The seating is limited if you come on the weekend but the outdoor seating increases the area a good bit when the weather is nice. The bagel sandwich was perfectly good and worth the price, but nothing to write home about. I got the cardamom latte and it was great. I’d maybe try to avoid its busiest times but I’d recommend going to this coffee shop.

One of the first coffee shops me and my wife found in Richmond almost a decade ago. And we’ve been regulars ever since. Their coffee bean blends are some of the best we’ve had, and we stop by every month to stock up on them so we can have great coffee at home. Get their breakfast burrito my way (sausage and bacon) slayer bagel, and Thai iced coffee are our favorites. I like the workers there, and the atmosphere. I feel extremely comfortable in their space. Thanks you guys!

There were alot of coffee shops to choose between Broad st and Cary but i DEFINITELY made the right choice coming to Lamplighter. Housed right on Addison st, I walked to the 5 bus from brook rd and got here in about 20 minutes total, so the commute was convenient to me. I ordered and sat in the screened in heated patio area which was very quiant. The atmosphere was suitable for parents with kids as well as business meetings. My order arrived no more than 15 minutes after I placed it which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered a cappuccino and a Lox bagel which was decently priced at a worthy $13. I dined alone and spent $20 total and was very satisfied with the tastes, experience, and service alike. My hunger was fulfilled, but the employees' generosity and the restaurant atmosphere raised my mood for the day. Highly recommend giving this place a try with a huge shout out to the staff for keeping their customers this happy and maintaining positive attitudes themselves! 10/10

Google
Reminds me neighborhood cafés in Portlandia...corner store, eclectric everything, hippyish little spot fréquent by local artists, residents, students, activists, etc. Drinks were good. Plenty of seating both indoors and out. Love that they have "community meals" where you can buy a meal for someone else. A few parking in front... Or on the street in the neighborhood. Drinks are not overpriced either.

I liked my latte and breakfast sandwich. I have no complaints. I like the plethora of outdoor seating options plus the mixed indoor/outdoor space

Delicious sandwiches and cool ambiance! Seating is limited to be prepared to sit outside in the cold

Good coffee shop location located in Richmond, VA. Whether you are looking for a cup of Joe or a place to chill and relax, this is a good spot with good flavor coffee!

Yelp
This is quite a busy spot ! But it's worth the wait ! I got a bagel and a chai latte. The bagel was really good; they had several options you can choose from as a vegetarian. Their coffee/drink selections were pretty good too and I had plenty of time during the wait to see what I wanted to get. The service was pretty quick too for how busy they were ! They've got plenty of seating around to chill while you wait and catch up with friends.

Yelp
I stopped by today to try some coffee based on the good reviews. The barista was super friendly (5 stars for him), but I was disappointed in the limited flavors, lack of lowfat or skim milk, and only darker roast of coffees available. It seems like a great place, but it doesn't have much to my liking.

Yelp
For the winter, this spot was pretty cramped and consequently felt like we had to be somewhat rushed through our meal. I had the Muna, which looked good on paper, but completely lacked in flavor. I also had the iced matcha latte, which was decent, but was almost entirely ice. My friend, who's a coffee connoisseur, had a cappuccino and was not impressed. Overall, I'm sure there are better cafes in Richmond.

Yelp
Lovely service and quick hot coffees and burritos. The parking was simple and effortless just ten minute walk from the cute Carytown shops. Definitely worth a stop for a snack and a caffeine break nearby the Art Museum and several other places to explore.

Yelp
Perhaps I am too friendly of a critic, but I love this place! My favorite outdoor space out of any coffeeshop in Richmond so far with plenty of seating and appreciate its dog-friendlyness. Everything just flows well from the place in which you order into the seating area and the baristas were all super friendly. Just an overall fun vibe that feels very "coffee-shop." Cute interior with plenty of awesome merchandise options and great looking pastries - loved my americano :) will most definitely be returning here throughout the rest of my time in Richmond!

Yelp
This place has been on my bucket list of places to try for what feels like forever. I'm happy to report it was worth the wait. Lamplighter is busy street corner with a tiny little parking lot in front. They have a separate entrance for you to place your order. When you place your order they ask for your name no additional order number is given. This proved to be a little confusing as there were two Jason's at the same time and they received the wrong drink. I ordered an iced lavender latte, breakfast burrito and a sweet potato muffin. Everything was really good. The breakfast burrito tasted homemade and was accompanied by a fresh salsa that was great. I will flag that this cafe is Vegan friendly as they have several vegan/ vegetarian options on the menu. Overall I really enjoyed my coffee and food and look forward to trying this place out in the future!

Yelp
This place has excellent, large breakfast burritos. The lattes are also very good. I wavered between 4 stars and 5 stars, because the seating area is very small, but ultimately this is still a great spot for coffee -- especially if you want a filling breakfast for a reasonable cost.

Yelp
Stopped by this coffeehouse for a 2nd time as the initial time was via a recommendation from Alex @ Resolve, for my matcha tea. And it didn't disappoint. Staff customer service was friendly and personably. Small and unassuming place which has coffee, tea & pastries, even plant-based. There matcha comes unsweetened which I love however they can added sweetness if that is your desire. Hubby had the chai muffin which he states was quite tasty. The vegan pastry option was all sold out both times... Next time I visit Richmond, I am stopping by early to grab one before they are all gone. I truly appreciate a spot that has local flyers of a variety of happenings in a city along with business cards for small business owners. The street is closed to most traffic as there is construction across the street yet its worth parking on the street and taking s stroll here.

Yelp
Small coffee spot with lots of seating indoors and outdoors. Great spot to sit and get some work done. Staff is friendly. There are a decent amount of food options. 10/10 coffee!!

Yelp
Love this coffee shop! The inside area to order is super small so the line formed outside but it didn't take too long for them to get to everyone. I got a lavender latte and it was good. A little too sweet for my liking but that might just be my pallet. My partner got and Peru drip coffee and said it tasted off/possibly burnt. We bought a bag of coffee so hopefully that redeems their coffee. The baked goods were delicious. The pumpkin bread was super moist as was the sweet potato muffin although I wish it has more cream cheese filling. Overall this is a great spot and I'd love to come back to the more menu items! Staff was very friendly.

Yelp
I found the location a bit weird being at the corner of Addison and tucked near the highway. Since my hotel didn't have coffee available, you gotta find caffeine somewhere that isn't Starbucks. Trekking all the way from Monroe Park, I finally found the spot and sauntered in. Chai Tea Latte, might sound basic but this one was unique. Ordered chilled on this hot day, every sip was soothing. And the smaller the sips, the better flavor you get. They did take a while to make my drink (around 8 minutes) but there was a line in front and they likely put a lot of care into their coffee/barista concoctions. Of course they have breakfast items too, since what else would you pair your coffee with? There's some outside seating and fewer inside seating so you're most likely getting to go here and then going about your day. Also the person taking my order sounded sweet which is better than someone being lackadaisical or irritated.

Yelp
For Sunday morning, I was looking for the place to have coffee and quick bite to have. I knew Lamplighter was the local coffee shop in Richmond and decided to have coffee from Lamplighter coffee roasters. From the menu I decided to order Cold Brew Coffee, Everything Bagel and also ordered Pumpkin Bread for to go. The coffee shop looked amazing with beautifully decorated and ample of place to sit and have coffee as well as to have the quick bite. The service was good and I soon got my order which included Coffee as well as Everything Bagel. The cold brew was amazing and it was freshly brewed. Amazing coffee to start my day. The Bagel was also delicious with Cream Cheese on it and it was tasty as well as delicious. Amazing coffee shop in Richmond to have coffee and quick bite to have.

Yelp
Lamplighter is one of the best (if not the best) coffee shops I have ever been to -- full stop. Their vegan breakfast sandwich was outstanding; their iced americano was so smooth; their iced chai was exceptional and is made in-house. They use Califia oat milk. Their vegan pumpkin bread (not pictured) was very good. The spirit of Lamplighter is so clear; the people who work there are kind, the clientele is clearly very dedicated to it, and there's so much energy in the stickers and writing on the bathroom walls to their well-loved community bulletin board. There is an abundance of outdoor seating, and the indoor seating is nice, too. I wouldn't do laptop work here; it's not that kind of place. I cannot emphasize enough how good this is from a coffee perspective, a vibe lens, and from a vegan eye and palate.

Yelp
Good service and food! A ton of nice patio space on days with good weather. The coffee is prepared well. I ordered the Katie bagel which was a good mix of ingredients! The service is great. Once our food was ready, someone brought our food out to us on the patio. Overall great place for a hangout or coffee break, with decent food and drink!

Terry M.

Yelp
It has a vibe! Long line moved fast. Popular place. Everyone in our group liked their coffees. For me, it wasn't quite bold or strong enough, but I do like mine more robust than most. Food options were delicious! We had burritos and bagels and baked treats. They have good vegan and gluten-free options. You order at the counter and they bring the food/drinks to you. Staff very friendly and efficient. Worth a stop, but go when you can be relaxed and enjoy the atmosphere.

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
I love Lamplighter, especially their Thai coffee, but 3 times now I've had to wait 30-40 minutes for just a bagel or breakfast burrito while they weren't even that busy. Their sweet potato chai muffin is incredible, would def recommend coffee and pastries but don't order food if you have anywhere else to be.
google avatar

Serah M.

Yelp
Loved this place! I had the vegan breakfast burrito which was excellent, and the iced coffee is SO good. Really friendly vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, staff, and culture! Location is A+ considering its placement by Maymont and other RVA attractions but also the building itself is unique, including an outdoor seating area, screened in seating area, and a smaller indoor seating area (which can get a bit cramped when busy). I recommend the Slayer Bagel (add greens!) and cold brew coffee with oatmilk :)
google avatar

Liz H.

Yelp
Cozy, unpretentious neighborhood coffee shop. I had a hot matcha latte that was perfectly sweetened and a delicious chocolate coconut cookie. Staff brings out your order so grab a table outside while you wait!
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee, expect to pay NYC prices. Some of the dishes are delicious some are experimental.

Yelp
sigh, Im not one to leave negative reviews-- and I'm aware that the service industry is hurting right now with covid cases and fears, staffing issues etc. I just honestly didn't have the greatest experience here. I have a lot of emotional ties with Lamplighters, as they're one of my first coffee experiences, so the nostalgia associated with them is always nice. This particular time, Covid has bent them into a order from the window/carry out and enjoy outside frame. Understandable, but I and others waited in their already small parking lot as seating is incredibly limited, as are their parking spaces. I waited 45 minutes for my chai tea and a latte, and when I received it, it was actually pretty cold. Unfortunate, as the weather was in the high thirties that day. I hope to visit again soon, and have a better experience.

Yelp
This place is so cute! We walked over with our puppy while staying at an Airbnb in The Fan. We got perfect coffees (I asked for a 12 oz iced americano with cream and sugar and they prepared it perfectly!). I got the bagel and lox, my husband got a sausage bagel sandwich. So delicious, very adorable place, will definitely try and return!

Kat F.

Yelp
Had a large order with my family and friends. The chai latte and bagels were delicious. It's a popular joint so a lot of people coming and going. There's a small space to sit inside and a bunch of tables outside. It's in a nice neighborhood.
google avatar

Kent R.

Yelp
This place has really solid bagels, better than some of the specialty bagel places I'm used to. Basic breakfast sandwiches are tasty. The outdoor space is great, coffee pretty good. Really kind servers. Enjoyed breakfast here twice on a 3-day trip to RVA. Would go back, next trip.

Gabrielle L.

Yelp
Lamplighter is serving up the best breakfast burrito I've had outside Texas. Nice servers as well. Amen
google avatar

Krystal K.

Yelp
Cute spot to stop for coffee and breakfast items. Got an iced vanilla latte and a bagel with cream cheese. Waited about 25-30 min; this was find since I had the time and they had some tables outside. However, I would've appreciated just a little heads up about the wait time being a bit longer than one might expect. Currently order online or outside order window only. Masks strongly encouraged. I appreciate all of these precautions and applaud them for this. Bagel and coffee were good. I would come back again and try more items.

Susan T.

Yelp
Superb coffee, very nice friendly staff . I highly recommend this place. I stoped there this afternoon for a couple of flat white coffees and a granola parfait. Yum! Really nice sitting outside under a tree watching the world go by

The A.

Yelp
i ordered a breve latte with honey. barista didn't know what a breve was. after spelling it out for him to understand, I was told the honey is put in by the customer afterwards. I asked if I could put the honey in the cup prior to brewing the coffee( to help dissolve the honey) I was told that they would not accommodate my request. coffee was mediocre.

Yelp
This place is excellent. I stopped here with my wife during a recent Richmond trip for a casual breakfast while walking around the neighborhood. They have a fantastic selection of bagel sandwiches and terrific coffee. I got a sausage, egg and cheese bagel sandwich and iced coffee and couldn't have been happier. This is a very Richmond coffee shop experience and I mean that in the absolute best ways.

Yelp
Came here with a few friends for some Sunday morning coffee! It was quite a popular place (outdoor ordering only) as many people were waiting for their espresso drinks (~20 minute wait time). I got the cortado (with oat milk) and was impressed with the strong flavor of fruity and bright espresso. The oat milk also made the drink creamy and delicious. I'm honestly really impressed with how bright the espresso was, and it definitely was the star of the drink. There's not much lingering after taste, though. I also got the cold brew (dark roast: Tall Bike Blend, tasting notes: cocoa, almond, fig, cherry) which was quite good. The initial taste was pretty mellow (not a strong brew) but the after taste is very chocolatey and slightly nutty, making it enjoyable. I don't know if I can really taste the fruitiness, but that's OK. I typically prefer a stronger tasting cold brew. Overall, I would definitely recommend the coffee here! My friends got iced lattes which they all seem to enjoy. I had a sip of the maple latte which was delicious but a bit too sweet for my taste. The barista was nice and friendly - really willing to give recommendations!
google avatar

Tammy W.

Yelp
Coffee was so good - I got a cold brew with some oat milk, mg friend got hot coffee. Also got a piece of the pumpkin bread which was incredibly moist and delicious. There is some outdoor seating but nothing inside right now. Expect to wait in line if you're going at a peak coffee time (we went on a Sunday morning around 9am and had 2-3 people in front of us). It appeared you could order online, as well, if you want to skip the line. Staff was friendly and service quick. If I lived in Richmond I would come here often!
google avatar

E. Y.

Yelp
Had a 12oz mocha. The coffee is good, but it's a bit pricey in my opinion. Though, it was quite crowded early Saturday morning. I wonder what the food taste like.

Yelp
Loved this spot! Fantastic and friendly service and very tasty coffee. Lamplighter is a unique venue with lots of outdoor seating (they have overflow seating across the street). It's tucked away off the main road behind a few row homes. This is a spot that is queer friendly where staff write their pronouns on their name plate. Noelle helped us out and we loved their service! We ordered a decaf almond milk latte and a regular Americano (black eye style). The drinks were delicious - aromatic with a smooth aftertaste. My partner loved his Americano so much that we bought a bag of beans to take with us. They ground the beans for us perfectly for our pour over (hario style). My partner ordered the breakfast burrito and loved it! It came with pico de gallo that he didn't even use until I reminded him it was there. He was quite the happy man afterwards. Definitely recommend this cafe and will return the next time we're at The Fan.
google avatar

Joy S.

Yelp
The girl who was taking our order and getting our coffee was so kind and friendly! She was so helpful and amazing! The coffee was quite strong and good! Personally it was a little too strong for me, but my friends really liked theirs! :)
google avatar

Alexander B.

Yelp
A staple for Richmond, Lamplighter serves the best coffee in the city with a variety of roasts. Don't sleep on the house Tallbike blend.
google avatar

Gabby T.

Yelp
I tried an iced latte, and it was pretty good. The prices were fairly similar to what Starbucks charges. They currently have an order/pickup window outside, and you must wear a mask on their property (even if vaccinated). They accept online orders for pickup.

Ryan H.

Yelp
"I love Lamp" Yummy burrito. Espresso soda is well balanced. Shop has good vibes! Popular on a Sunday. There's a board inside with coupons for free burritos or pastries - u can choose to pre-purchase for someone at the register. That's very nice for those in need. A good variety of seating options, including a nice glass lot across the street. Cozy! In the morning, it has shade
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
The coffee is great and the ambiance fun and pleasant. Inside they have a small dining area and tables outside are in the sun so pleasant on a sunny winter day. I'd like to go back for lunch. They have a good-looking menu.
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
As many people have mentioned already, the coffee was great but the service wasn't. I order the Thai coffee this morning, it took more than 20 minutes to receive my drink. If you order food, the wait time would be even longer. Tips: order online next time and pick up in store. There are limited parking spaces in front of the store.
google avatar

Kat L.

Yelp
Love their coffee! Also the ordering system is so safe and smooth. I usually just get espresso shots on ice, but they're popular for their milk steaming I heard. I like the fact that their espresso is bold but not too acidic. Taste really good with a little bit of cream or half 'n half.
google avatar

Kedar D.

Yelp
What a cool, cozy coffee shop, tucked away in a great neighborhood! I walked here one morning and had an excellent cup of coffee ($4) and a delicious vegan chocolate croissant ($4). It's a small spot, with some outdoor seating, on a quiet residential corner. All told, this is a great place to catch up with a friend or get a great vegan snack. It looked like they also have substantial vegan food options like biscuits and gravy.
google avatar

Breanna T.

Yelp
I would not recommend this place at all. I stopped here to get their cold brew. First off their staff or at least the oder lady was not friendly. it's a coffee place but no bathroom, I was told to go to the Sherman Williams paint store. They charge if you want sweetener, like wtf. I ordered the 20oz cold brew no ice and it came out not filled. When I asked about the cup not bring filled was told cause I asked for no ice and that I actually was given more then I would if I got ice. Your menu says 20oz cold brew it doesn't say iced cold brew in a 20oz cup. You really sell a cup of ice with a splash of cold brew then on top of that charge for sweetener yeah no thanks. Also other coffee shops have better cold brew. I took it home added creamer and my own Splenda, I would never give this place my business.

Sarah T.

Yelp
They don't charge for dairy free milk!! :) very cute ambiance and vibes with outdoor seating
google avatar

Yelp
Great service! Great menu! Super cute spot, indoor or out. Nice ambiance music. Wonderful neighborhood corner coffee shop. Will definitely come again!

Christina P.

Yelp
My friend and I were staying in the area for the weekend and we needed coffee desperately. Cue Lamplighter coffee. I think this is one of the most lively coffee shops I've ever seen. We stopped here twice, sort of. The first time was Thursday evening and the second time was an attempt on Sunday morning. There was a line on Sunday...out the door. We had to leave because it was taking too long but I really wished we had had the time. That Thursday we grabbed an Iced Thai Coffee for $3.50 each. Good size, great price, amazing taste! Highly recommend it if you want to try something different. There's seating inside and the décor is very cool, very coffee-shop-y (...that made sense in my head). There's also several picnic tables outside where you can laze around if you can manage to grab a seat. Loved this place and would love to come back!

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
It's my favorite coffee shop in RVA but man if you don't go before 9am you're going to wait at least 20 minutes for food. I just went and literally turned around walked back to my car and left because of how many people were there. It's just too small for the volume of people.
google avatar

Vyshak C.

Yelp
Wow, been coming here for years now and finally getting to a review after visiting again. Great coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch sandwiches as well. I've had the Brichta before and its so bomb, the soy chorizo/hummus combo pairs nicely with a heavy serving of Sriracha. This time around I went for lunch with a homie and we split two sandwiches: the 17 1/2 (turkey, swiss, carmelized onions and jerk aioli) and one of the Seasonal sandwiches that had Turkey pesto, havarti, and turkey. Both were great, but obviously very different flavors. The turkey on both hit the spot, and I'm hella sleepy right now attempting to get through this review. Come here and def try both, you won't be disappointed. Pros: Great selection of sandwiches - lunch or breakfast Coffee - signature milk honey latte is dope Service Ambiance: super hipster, indoor and outdoor seating Cons: None

Yelp
I'm not a coffee fanatic by any means, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I really enjoyed the coffee I got (don't have any pictures unfortunately). We went on a super cold day, so there weren't that many people, but the wait time was a bit longer than expected! It was definitely a nice pick-me-up on the way back to our car. There was outdoor seating due to COVID, and the only suggestion I would have is to make the menu bigger when ordering outside, it was kinda hard to see!
