Nice place to start to learn the culture and history of Lanai. The timeline gave a comprehensive understanding of what happened on Lanai from thousands of years ago.
Human activities existed on Lanai a thousand years ago. And in recent history, there are a few buying and selling of the entire island. Selling due to bankruptcy and financial stain.
At some point, the island population were as low as 600 people, to as high as 6000 people, to now, about 3000 people.
The Lanai city was build in the center of town to supply labor force to the dole plantation to grow pineapples. And where water is mostly concentrated. Labor forces were mostly Filipinos and Japanese.
Sugar cane business was also tried and failed due to lack of water.
Huge pine trees were grown here at the town center dole park to collect tons of water.
The two staffs there were very nice and answered all of our questions. They also provided us with a map to the Koloiki trial, where we went next!
