"The Land of Oz, a famously failed theme park on Beech Mountain, in North Carolina, will be offering one-hour guided tours every Friday in June, as well as Saturday, June 30, the Charlotte Observer reported. The “Journey With Dorothy” tour asks you to “drop all inhibitions and to remember your childhood,” according to the park’s website. “With Dorothy as your guide, you will skip down the yellow brick road through the magical Land of Oz™ to help her search for the wonderful wizard during this interactive experience.” Guests may even be asked to play Dorothy or another Oz character for the tour, as it makes stops at particular points on the Yellow Brick Road to act out scenes. The park got famous on the internet after urban explorers posted spooky pictures of the desolate park. Features look decrepit, plants are overgrown, and parts of the road are missing. Even though it has been closed for over 35 years, only opening from time to time over the years, management of the park says it is not “abandoned.” The park originally opened in 1970 and officially “closed” in 1980. In the 1990s, the park began opening once a year in the fall. Sales from its Autumn at Oz event are put toward restoring the park, according to the website. Tickets for June’s Journey With Dorothy are $25 per person, and will officially go on sale on April 20." - Travel + Leisure Editors

A must see! Step inside the movie as you walk through this amazing performance from the opening scenes, to riding the tornado, walking the yellow brick road, outwitting the which, and finally meeting the Wizard! This place truly is magical. Stay informed via website and get tickets early before they sale out. Also check out Tweeties Railroad, downtown Bonne and Blowing Rock also close bye.

I have visited the Land of Oz twice now and it's such a wonderful experience. They have the best staff and all of the performers are amazing. The costumes are movie quality and everyone takes their roles very seriously. Boone mountain is absolutely gorgeous and from Oz you can see the views from the top of the mountain along with all of the amazing sites along the yellow brick road. The yellow brick road is just under a mile winding through the trees at the top of the mountain. The area is primarily shaded and there are places to stop and sit along the way if you need a break. It's basically a leisurely stroll on a paved path as long as you are not bothered by the incline or the change in elevation. But if you are not used to walking a mile or so at a time then that's definitely something to consider before you go. There's a lot of walking to get from the parking area up to the bus loading area and then from the buses into the park and then you walk through the park itself. There are several areas where you do have to walk across gravel as well. It's just things to keep in mind when planning your trip and when choosing the shoes you are going to wear. If you have high heeled ruby slippers then you might want to pack a pair of backup shoes just in case...I saw several people walking across gravel Barefoot because they couldn't walk in their ruby slippers. There are a lot of areas that are handicapped accessible, but there are a lot of areas that really aren't. You walk a lot, and there are stairs that you have to climb to get to the shuttles that take you up the mountain, most of the park is an incline, and if you are not used to the higher elevation then that is something to take into consideration as well before you go. Technically, I suppose you could push a wheelchair through the majority of the park, but it is not going to be easy, I did see people there with wheelchairs and I saw Oz staff assisting them with pushing the wheelchairs. Truly, unless you are capable of walking most of the day and going uphill a lot I wouldn't recommend it, it's not going to be a leisurely trip for you. The overlook add-on is beautiful, but you do climb over one hundred stairs to get there, I can't remember the exact number but I think it was 109. This area is not accessible and I saw a lot of people struggling making their way up the stairs. You get a beautiful view from the gazebo at the beginning of the park as well and that area is easily accessible, so don't worry about missing out on the views if the steps may be too difficult. I would not want to take a really small child there that would need to be carried all day or that you would have to push in a stroller. I took my daughter when she was five, and she had a wonderful time, she was young enough for it to be magical and old enough to walk on her own without being upset about walking all day. Oz is an absolutely wonderful place and I highly recommend visiting, none of this information is meant to be negative or to deter people from visiting. I just hope the information is helpful while trying to plan your trip.

This has been on our bucket list since we moved to Nc 2 years ago! I wasn't sure what to expect but it was AMAZING. I definitely feel it's a must see at least once in your life. No detail was missed! We took the chairlift up to Oz and obviously back down. There was amazing views and scenery. Once we got to Oz there was plenty of spots for us to take pictures at and meet the characters. All characters did such a great job in their role! There is some hills and walking that you may need to wear good shoes or take a rest. I saw older people resting quite a bit as some parts can be difficult, I mean you are on a mountain! I'm very overweight and I did fine with resting 2 times after a killer hill. We also did the scenic view trail (extra fee) beautiful! Such a neat place and glad we finally made it out!

Land of Oz was a magical experience! I highly recommend picking the first time slot available on the days Autumn of Oz is running. Much like a Doctors office, the time slots get delayed to people coming and going. Because Land of Oz is located at Beech mountain resort, you need to ride contracted buses to ride you up the winding roads from the parking lots lower at mountain. This is VERY normal for ski resorts here and best way to go up and down. However because the roads are narrow, they must take turns with what hours of buses come up vs down. This causes the waiting and delays some people aren’t happy with. Because Autumn at Oz is only 3 weekends there are a LOT of people moving through the land at once -they have it very organized so you can follow Dorothy through her story! You can stay back at whatever section you would like but cannot move backwards. Since the shows are very 15/30 min you WILL see everyone and even meet and take pictures with them. This was a highlight for me. You can tell the cast and crew truly is passionate about Land of Oz! I encourage you to eat prior (mostly snacks and fair foods) and bring water to walk through Oz. Dress up and have fun!!

Breathtaking views, careful attention to detail, and wonderful cast - all made a wonderful and immersive experience every step of the way! If you have difficulty climbing steps - I’d recommend refraining from purchasing the add on for “Over the Rainbow” Observation Deck since it is not ADA friendly at all. If you’re able to traverse multiple flights of stairs at incline though - the view at the peak is unbelievable! Missing this experience is not a deal breaker however. There’s plenty of experiences along the main attraction route that make this NC pilgrimage a must see destination at least once in a lifetime!

Phenomenal experience! better than we expected. you could literally spend 2 to 3 hours here easily with all the skits, photos with the cast, gift shops, food, etc. I highly recommend the chair lift. it really adds to the experience especially at 5,500 ft

Google
lovely drive to the fairytale like forest of beech mountain. They won’t let you park more than one hour before your ticket time. *** Pass the 1007 address they give you and park at the resort with blue signs. *** I recommend an early ticket because I easily spent 4.5 hours here. Actors did a great job, and they did great making sure you felt like you were living in the movie.

So amazing! If you like Wizard of Oz at all, you'll absolutely love it! Never crowded, easy to see the shows happening as if you were in the movie watching. Opportunity to have pictures taken with each character as well.

Yelp
Honestly, I went in with fairly low expectations, and I left surprised at how much fun we had! We arrived at the Beech Mountain Resort parking lot at 9:15am for our 10am time slot. There was plenty to do at the resort, including buying snack foods and shopping at Oz-themed booths. Around 9:30am we boarded the shuttle and then shortly after we left for the Land of Oz; we got there right at 10am. Without giving anything away, I was surprised at how coordinated the event was, and how we followed a pre-planned path, but we never felt like we were being hurried to the next event. I was concerned our tween boys would think the whole thing was hokey, but they had a blast too. All of the actors gave it their all, and I never saw anyone break character, which was impressive considering the amount of improv and crowd work they did. We zoomed through most everything, and we were done by a little after noon. If we had taken our time and gotten food at the Emerald City, we easily could have spent 1-2 more hours. It was an exciting event, and I'm so glad we went. There were lots of people in our time slot (1 shuttle and two school buses full), but everything was so well paced that it didn't feel overcrowded. Bit of advice: bring water and snacks in a backpack unless you are ready to pay a premium to buy them at the Land of Oz.

Yelp
The great thing about this theme park is that there were many more adults, and we're talking senior adults like as as well, than children. That's right, and we all enjoyed it immensely because the old adage is correct, " We're all just kids at heart" and we remember "The Wizard of Oz" as if we just saw it for the first time six decades ago. Kudos to everyone for a job well done!

Yelp
I was very surprised. Very well organized. ALL employees were very very nice, friendly and helpful. It took about 4 hours to get thru with waiting to get pictures with actors which were enthusiastic entertaining and talented. Using the chair lift was an added experience as you can see miles of the mountains and ability to watch the mountain bikers coming down the hill. Watch the weather and wind because you're on top of beech mountian. Book tickets early as they are only open a few weeks of the year and sell out quickly. Buy lift tickets once there in case weather is not favorable for riding
