On the Grid : Landeszeughaus

"The Styrian Armoury (German: Landeszeughaus) results from the resulting need to store large quantities of armour and weapons, and was built from 1642 until 1645 by a Tyrolean architect called Antonio Solar. Among the 21 departments and institutions of the Joanneum Universal Museum, founded as the Joanneum in 1811, the Armoury is in a class of its own. It is the Joanneum’s most-visited institution without an exhibitions role. Moreover, as the largest historic armoury in the world, it is a living memorial to a chequered, conflict-ridden past, whose bogeymen and prejudices are still with us." - HUNGRY

Great museum to visit if you are a fan of military history. Normally you need a guide to accompany you but in winter, you are exempted from having the guide. However, you will definitely need a guide to understand the context of where the armoury and weapons came from as well as a clearer understanding of the key pieces on display.

The guide was really friendly, and explained the history of the armory very well. We even go to hold a lot if the artifacts (mainly weapons) present in the armory. Bonus point is the fact that the small guide books were available in many languages, even in Slovenian.

Impressive collection of Styrian armory. Worth of seeing. Check info before going, because some months they allow only participating into the guided tour and this has to be reserved beforehand. You find a lift, otherwise stairs between the floors. At wintertime it is chilly inside. Wear warm clothes. No bags allowed to the area. Lockers at the groundfloor, which operate with 1 euro coin.

We weren’t sure what to expect, as this isn’t usually the type of place we go for, but it was totally worth it. A little bit of history and a huge collection of items. I highly recommend visiting this place.

Omg. I loved it. Weapons are amazing. Employees are super helpful to answer lots of questions and are quite knowledgeable too. Definitely one of the coolest places to see in Graz!

The Graz armoury is an astonishing collection of weapons and armour, preserved through a historical accident and housed right in the centre of the city. From the outside the building doesn’t look much different from those around it, but once inside there’s floors and floors of pikes, rifles, armour, shields and so much more. I’m not generally a fan of museums but this was superb, and an absolute must see in any visit to this part of Austria.

The entrance is only allowed through the guided tour on the weekday winter period. They have German tour at 11am and English tour at 1230. The ticket costs 12 euro for the adult. You must lock your bag inside their locker with 1 euro coin, the coin will be refunded to you when you unlock the locker. The tour is fun with our English guide, we also allowed to hold a sword, another guarding tool and wear a helmet.
