Lovely place and owners! The food was a mixed bag. The escargot was excellent, the meat, very chewy and loaded with fat.

L’Angelus du Canal Oh my goodness....what an incredible little gem of a restaurant! The set up is ‘classic French bistro,’ with a bar in the center and square wooden tables aligned one against another on both sides of the room. Don't let the close seating worry you, as this is very common in Paris, and as the patrons are genuine and fun (true family vibe), chances are you will make new friends before the end of the evening! I did. The father and son team work the front of the house interchangeably, to provide efficient, unpretentious and warm service to every customer. No question about the menu is nonsensical or silly, so whatever language you speak or additional description you may need, ask away, and your questions will be answered with courtesy and care. The food is delicious, quintessential French cuisine with some touches of world influence here and there. Everything that comes from the kitchen is perfectly seasoned, prepared, and beautifully plated with modern flair. The dishes I’ve tried so far have been the ‘blanquette de veau,’ braised beef cheeks (like a boeuf bourguignon), ‘boudin du pays Basque,’ ‘foie gras poélé’….and the showstopper, ‘petits pots d’escargot de Bourgogne,’ (the house specialty since 1993). I'm not quite certain how to describe the infamous escargot. Let's just say, I would rename them to, "Life Altering Escargot," as they are just that good. From my experience, classic escargot served in shells can be awkward and messy to eat - and there never seems to be enough garlic butter for proper bread dipping! Here, the escargot (6 or 9 pieces) are served individually in tiny little ‘pots’ (ramequins) (with their own little spoon) nestled in the most abundant, flavorful and foamy garlic-herb butter you will ever taste. A slight tomato and herb finish at the bottom of each little ‘pot’ cuts through the richness of the butter, to create perfect balance. Like an edible lid, perched on top of each little ‘pot,’ a crisp and buttery crouton round adds the necessary finale crunch to the perfect mouthful. I’m addicted. I’ve been to L’Angelus du Canal twice but will need to return for more!

I love this small neighborhood restaurant. Great food at a very reasonable price. I knew the owner, Phillippe, when he had his restaurant in Singapore. L'angelus du Canal was like visiting an old friend.

When I saw this restaurant in google and their 4.9 out of 5 evaluation I was immediately curious and could not help but had some high expectations. We started with some starters and their snails recipe is the best I have ever tried. All seafood appetisers were so yummy and fresh, the bread was of a very good quality and same goes for the wine. Some of the main courses we ordered were: veggie burger for which my vegetarian friend really loved it and I went for octopus and ratatouille. I really loved the octopus, was juicy and delicious. I am a bit sceptical if it’s the perfect match with the ratatouille, but I still finish all my plate. The staff is extremely polite and good knowers of French cuisine and very welcoming to our group.

This place is great. It’s on a relatively quiet street in a cool neighborhood. The food is fantastic. Honestly the best escargot I have had anywhere. The father and son that run the place are both nice and funny.

We visited with our family on Easter weekend. We were looking for bistro that Parian locals might visit and this did not disappoint. My family is full of picky eaters but everyone was able to find something they were happy with. Do yourself a favor and get a double order of the ravioli as a starter, you won’t regret it. I also asked our server (I believe this was the owner’s son), to surprise me with a glass of wine, two different times, and both glasses were fantastic. A place like this is really what gives Paris the charm we all think about and keep us coming back for more. Lastly, while we were waiting for our Uber, a less than fortunate man was walking down the street and the owner came out, pulled up a chair and offered him a coffee. It was a very generous gesture and a teachable moment we were able to share with our kids.

An amazing place. We travelled all around Paris going to some great restaurants and on our last night decided to try somewhere local to where we were staying. So funny that the one place we hadn’t planned on going to was the best! Food was incredible, the D’escargo starter and Scallop main course highlights, atmosphere and friendly staff were brilliant. One of the best meals we’ve ever had - will be going back every time!

A gem of bistro in a quiet and peaceful street of the beautiful canal Saint Martin. Family run business. Father and son a perfect duet. They really make you feel welcome.Food is excellent. Not to be missed if you want to experiment real French bistro lifestyle. Cherry on the cake, the wine list is superb and not overpriced. The Chablis is great for «  aperitif « and the boss has excellent recommandations for your diner. Will return

Yelp
After many and successful Singaporean pilgrimages, Gabriel de Balasy and Philippe Hoyez return to the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin for a successful bistronomic come-back. Nice and wide choice of appetizers that do not exceed 10 euros (except for scallops and foie gras, normal!), juggling between the french regions, with the snails of Burgundy, socca from Nice or Provence with artichokes "barigoule".   But it is the asparagus that I tested with an original declination as they are proposed first in section (fairly classic) but also in very thin strips marinated with lemon. We bounce well on the Hollandaise sauce that embellishes everything.   The snails are individually pot covered with a fine toasted bread crumbs.   It is more in the dishes that one feels an Asian influence of the Singaporean restaurant with the Kampot pepper that perfumes the pad of rump steak or the shitake risotto with herbal juice. But my choice felt on an astonishing risotto of sweetbreads. Difficult mix because two "fat" products, one in its texture, the other in its mode of cooking, completed with cream. But the whole is harmonious, without heaviness. We can simply regret a slight over-cooking of the rice. Not the chef's incompetence, but the obligation to adapt to a clientele who does not know how to eat a real risotto, with a crunchy heart. Do not hesitate to say that you are a true amateur and that you want your rice just cooked, the kitchen will make your day ...   Very classic scallops with just cooked vegetables. We succeed them or not. There, it's perfect.   How do we recognize a restaurant? To the ability to offer desserts made "to order" and commanded at the beginning of the meal. In this case, a "Famous Paris-Brest" is worth the detour. Excellent crème mousseline praliné, puff pastry was crunchy, not at all this soft symptomatic products made too long in advance and which moisten in the fridge. A beautiful thing!   To all this is added a pleasant terrace in summer, a quiet street, a shop nearby that will serve a few glasses "in the meantime", a good service. Our owners are good drinkers so more than efficient wine choices.   So a nice table to discover near the Canal Saint-Martin.
