How to Take an Unforgettable Winter Trip to Iceland — Northern Lights, Gorgeous Inns, and Frozen Waterfalls Included

"On a drive en route to other stops I paused at Langhús Farm, where co-owner Lukka Heimisdóttir introduced me to a bouncing litter of Icelandic sheepdog puppies and I rode Askur through cutting wind and cracking snow, the air carrying the distant whiff of the Greenland Sea." - Marcia DeSanctis Marcia DeSanctis Marcia DeSanctis is the New York Times best-selling author of “100 Places in France Every Woman Should Go,” and the 2022 memoir-in-essays, “A Hard Place to Leave: Stories from a Restless Life.” She has reported from India, Rwanda, Brazil, and elsewhere for Travel + Leisure. We had the best time here! The tour guides were so nice and knowledgeable! It was amazing to ride on the horses, and they are so well mannered and easy to ride. I love how personal everything was, and the waffles were amazing! I loved the herding dogs and liked how they ran right up to us for pets. This tour absolutely made my trip to Iceland even more amazing, and I hope I get to come back. Thank you to the family and team who put work into making such an amazing experience!

We had a wonderful morning in late June horseback riding with Lukka and Josephine at Langhus Farm. Lukka was spectacularly friendly and helpful from the beginning of my correspondence to this farm, and went out of her way to make us feel welcome when we arrived at the farm months later for our Viking tour! This was our second ride on Icelandic horses, and this scenery was just lovely, winding from the farm alongside the mountain and down the road, to a beautiful little lupine field and back to the farm, with Lukka entertaining us the whole way. My horse Falcon was gentle and perfect, per the usual with Icelandic horses, and my five year old son was led by Lukka on her horse. He loved the experience, and he felt so safe the entire time, guided by Lukka. That two hour tour went so fast! The midges were a bother, so maybe bring a net; Lukka and Josephine kindly gave our kids nets for their faces at one point when the midges were bothering them near the lupine field. Hot chocolate and the offer of coffee after was so sweet, and we tipped our horses by adding their names to the tip jar for treats. :) Lukka even wrote down the name of a nearby restaurant for us when I asked where is good to have lunch nearby. The restaurant was so enjoyable as was seeing the little valley town of Siglufjordur on our way to our next destination. Thank you SO MUCH Lukka and Langhus Farm for your hospitality, the use of your beautiful gentle horses, and your friendship! We are so glad we came to spend the morning with you.

If you are in this area and want to ride horses we highly recommend Langhus. My 21 month old daughter was able to ride her horse for 1/2 an hour which she adored in the ring. After warming up in the ring and making sure I was comfortable they took me out to ride by the beach. We rode down a gravel road and the guide and I spoke about the Icelandic horse which is fascinating if you like horses. My husband stayed with my daughter who got to pet the dogs, horses and use the hot tub. It was one of my best experiences in iceland. The views are lovely and the staff kind and patient.

The tour is worth! The weather for us was really nice, sunny and clear! The horses are smart and will for the most part ride themselves. The special trotting is fun! My horse Sparkle is the best!🐎🏇

A very good experience ! I booked for "A little bit of everything tour" on 7th october, and it was perfect ! The kindness of the team, our two guides who explained a lot of things about horses, nature and history and taked care of us for all the tour ( the lunch was wonderful). The weather was exceptional ! Well done Ísland! A big thanks to Gormur, the horse, for carrying me for 4h between beach and valley. Icelandic horses are incredibly well treated and they give us back ! To finish, I booked for the waffles and the bath for my husband and I, the options on the farm. I recommand, it was absolutely perfect after the riding. Thank you so much, the best experience of my trip in Iceland. I wish a good continuation to all the team ! Bests regards Vanessa

We had an exceptional experience on our horse riding tour at Langhús Farm! What a joyful experience. We booked the Viking Tour and our guides were wonderful. They did a great job teaching us how to ride and getting us to practice before we set out (we are total newbies to horse riding). The horses were so sweet and gentle. The countryside that we rode through was so beautiful. We had a great chat with our guides and they helped us take pictures at opportune moments. We got to see sheep and their lambs all along the way and try out the special Icelandic horse trot! We also appreciated how clear the owners are about how well their horses are treated throughout their lives on this farm. This was such a special part of our trip and will stay in our memories.

Thank you to the beautiful people and Icelandic horses on Langhuis farm. We had a fantastic ride. Great scenery. Learned lots from Mia about Icelandic history. The host were fantastic. Thank you for taking a photo of us on our horses with our sailboat anchored in the harbour behind us🇨🇦 and for the car ride back to our boat! 💖 5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wow is all we can say. Our young kids (ages 4.5 and 2.5) had the best time ever! Mom and dad had an amazing time, too. Lukka was incredible. She and her staff are amazing with kids. They were fun, patient, caring, and funny. Lukka is also incredibly knowledgeable about Icelandic natural heritage, culture, and history, and was very generous with her time. We absolutely loved learning about Icelandic horses. But we also learned a little bit about Icelandic dogs. To top it all off, we enjoyed a delicious lunch of traditional Icelandic waffles with topping choices including rhubarb jam, blueberry jam, Nutella, maple syrup (from Canada!), whip cream and more. We ended our excursion with a soak in their super relaxing geothermal hot tub made up of waters from the local Langhus hot spring and fresh mountainous spring waters. If we could give this experience 10 stars, we most certainly would. Thank you so much Lukka and family, and to assistant guides Magda and Kristina. This experience was one of our highlights from travels across most of Iceland. Tak, tak. Bless, bless! ❤️❤️❤️
