Lanka - Review - South Hampstead - London - The Infatuation

"Lanka is a French patisserie serving perfect cakes with a Japanese influence. It’s also the reason we fantasise about throwing an extravagant dinner party in one of the neighbouring South Hampstead townhouses and passing off the baked cheesecake as our own work. It’s a small grab-and-go space where orders, packaged in classy boxes with silver ribbons, are picked up by dachshund-toting locals. The green tea tart is our slice of choice here. Smooth, silky, with white chocolate to balance the earthy tea notes, it works well for a special occasion or birthday gift, or just a Friday lunchtime treat. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Food Rundown Green Tea Tart There’s laser-cut precision to the edges of this green tea tart, so even before eating it, you get a sneak peek of how vibrant and velvety the green tea filling is. The white chocolate shavings add some much-needed sweetness and we love the not-too-thick buttery tart base. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Green Tea Tiramisu Where the tart is balanced to perfection, this tiramisu is a little too heavy on the cream. It becomes the overwhelming flavour and overpowers everything else. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Baked Cheese Cake The best thing about this slice is the texture—dense but still smooth and creamy. It’s perfect. The little bit of sweetness coming from the apricot jam is also a very nice touch. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Sinéad Cranna

I absolutely LOVE Lanka! I honestly wish I lived right next to their incredible cake shop — that’s how obsessed I am. This is my third time purchasing from them, and they never disappoint. Just last week, I stopped by around noon and was blown away when the chef brought out a freshly made tiramisu cake and beautifully crafted. It was insanely good — rich, delicate, and clearly made with passion. You can feel the love and care in every bite. This isn’t just a regular cake shop; it’s on a whole different level. Their macarons deserve a special shoutout too — perfectly crisp on the outside, soft inside, and not overly sweet. Just right. My favorites so far have been the matcha tiramisu, Earl Grey macarons, strawberry tart, and the green tea strawberry cake. Each one was a standout in its own way. Next on my list? The lemon meringue. I can’t wait to try it!

Wonderful cakes and always keep the high quality. Friendly service. I really want they can work 7 days a week and develop branches. My favourite is green tea tart. P.S: it’s really a Japanese bakery with reasonable price( not like other fake Japanese bakeries in London , tastes bad, expensive and with rude service)

If you are looking for the perfect pastry experience, this shop is an absolute gem! The desserts are delicious and worth every penny. Each bite feels like a treat made with love and care. The friendly staff and owner make the experience even more enjoyable. They are always welcoming and happy to recommend their specialties.

Amazing tiny bakery selling baked goods primarily for takeaway and a bunch of other Japanese goods. It’s a shame the place has almost zero seating aside from a small single table outside that actually belongs to the drinks shop next door so you need to purchase a drink there to use the seating. The pear almond tart was one of the greatest baked goods I’ve ever tasted. Exceeding my previous similar favourite Pistachio and Apricot tart from Belle Epoque which went downhill an after they changed the recipe.

Really delightful fusion cakes combining Japanese and French baking elements. This place had been on my list to try for almost 5 years as I had been recommended by friends multiple times but just never got round to trying it until now. It's mostly because it's not close to home and there is nothing else to do in the area so I didn't manage to find the right reason. But this Easter long weekend I decided to trek down from further North since it was nice weather. I was surrounded with so many delicious and visually pleasing options I didn't know what to get so I asked the staff member who the bestsellers were. She very kindly recommended a few so I got 4 slices in total - plum tart, green tea tart, green tea and strawberry cake and baked cheesecake. One thing to note is that they only do take aways, but there are 2 seats outside. I grabbed the seats for me and my friend and we just devoured one slice each on the spot. I went with the plum tart which was so pleasant, tasted almost like a British tea cake because of the mild flavour. The plums on the top definitely added more flavour to it. I then divided the remaining cakes to eat for the next few days and thoroughly enjoyed each and single of them. My favourite has got to be the green tea tart - OMG the green tea flavour was so rich and smooth it was phenomenal with the white chocolate flakes on the top! The remaining 2 were good but I was so mind-blown by the green tea tart I can't really remember much in terms of flavour. I am definitely going back soon for more green tea tart and would love to try out the other ones as they all looked so tasty!

Google
The green tea flavor is nice and pure. I would say this Japanese bakery still maintain the taste and style of Japanese. Unfortunately the roll cake is a bit dry. And the staffs are friendly. Comparing to WA cafe at Ealing, unfriendly staffs and pricey, Lanka would be my option now. Green tea Tart £4.50 Green tea Panna Cotta Azuki Bean £4.50 Green tea roll cake £4.50 Green tea Tiramisu £5.00

Google
A nice little place for morning or afternoon tea. They provide a wide range of classical French desserts, which are freshly baked everyday. However, it is a shame that most cakes are too sweet to feature the delicacy of different texture and flavour. They also offer a selection of great tea, which could to some extent balance out the (over)sweetness of the cakes.

This is such an authentic Japanese patisserie. Owned by Japanese. The cakes were as one would find in Japan. The green tea matcha patisserie were to die for. The taste was light and moth watering a must for anyone. All made with good ingredients.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Had a cake for birthday as well as 2 slices to try, as I am a big matcha fan. All 3 items were extremely tasty, a nice palette combination of Japanese and french. Most important, the desserts were not overly sweet like many other dessert houses. And the people working there were all lovely!! I was struggling to choose among so many delicious cakes and they were very patient, smiling all the time. Would continue to come here for matcha cakes!!!

Yelp
Some of the best deserts I've had. I don't really have a sweet tooth but the pastry chef creates such well balanced treats! Japanese and French influenced. Definitely a winner.

Yelp
This cute little shop is French patisserie at its best with a Japanese twist. The chef is a super friendly Japanese patissier who owns a small shop just around the corner from Waitrose in Finchley Road. There's not many places to sit down, but if you do have the chance, definitely get a pot of Ceylon or Green tea with rose; it's a perfect way to spend a nice afternoon in the weekend (opened on Tue- Sunday but closed on Monday) I have made numerous trips here but my favourite is still the Green tea strawberry cake. The sponge is fluffy and it goes perfectly with the sweet whipped cream and tangy strawberry. The chef often brings out the freshly baked cakes on the table so it's tempting to have more than one. The apple tarts are also amazing but slightly on the heavy side so maybe no seconds if you get this!

Yelp
I discovered this little gem completely by accident due to Swiss Cottage Tube station being closed over the weekend. Approaching my friend's house from a different direction brought me across this exquisite little ckae shop & tea salon From its name, you could probably guess that they source their tea from Ceylon (Sri Lanka). What is less obvious from the name is the collection of wonderful French style cakes and patisserie by chef Masayuki Hara. The closest thing that springs to mind are the perfectly formed pastries you find at Yaautcha in Soho There is a small seating area at the back of the shop but with eat in prices costing more, I would guess most people would take away one of these little sinful treats for secret indulgences at home. I bought some macarons as a present and they were lovely The prices are high, which is the only downside but this is a little gem just off Finchley Road

Yelp
Cake cake cake- but not just any old cakes. The Japanese cakes with French patisseries twist are divine. From strawberry green tea cakes to Mont Blancs to coconut macaroons. I always like to pop in on the way home from work to see what's new... And I discovered Yuzu mousse last night. Wow! Simply amazing with a strong yuzu (citrus) flavour, delicately balanced with the soft and creamy white mousse! Winner!

Yelp
Should I write this review? This little oasis only has 3 tables, and I don't want them to run out of anything the next time I visit. Alas, it's my duty and more importantly Lanka deserves the recognition and for their name and reputation to spread throughout London. Holy #*$& the cakes are good. This patisserie has the French classics, but led by a Japanese chef all their cakes and desserts have the brilliant lightness associated with Japanese bakery. Do they use less butter? More Eggs? Less Flour? Whatever it is, it's brilliant. Flavours are excellent and not overly sweet and presentation is impeccable. We had the baked cheesecake and Strawberry cake which were amazing. At around £3-4 a slice it may seem pricey on the surface but once you've had a taste you'll be tempted by another. The ceylon tea I had to accompany the sweet treats was also good and service was friendly, polite and helpful with a touch of Japanese class. It's a relaxing place to escape the city and just enjoy a moment with your slice of heaven. Not your typical French pastries but excellent in its own right. I would gladly make the 25 minute walk there just for a slice of Lanka's delicate sweetness. OMG I wish it was open 24 hours.

Yelp
I've loved Lanka cakes ever since they started their sweet little shop in Primrose Hill. They've consistently produced beautiful cakes and I love their mix of Japanese and French influences. Over the winter holiday, I enjoyed their green tea strawberry cake as well as their chocolate christmas cake. Simply delicious.

Yelp
Another example of gorgeous looking french patisserie with a distinctive japanese twist. The chef is a joy and keeps bringing samples from the kitchen below to the restaurant and handing them out to clients (and making you want to eat the whole place), announcing what's coming next and always glad to hear compliments - in his case totally deserved as the cakes are wonderful (to taste and to look at). Me and my friend shared the salted caramel tart + rum baba + bread and butter pudding and they were all awesome. They have a facebook page that shows every day what's available + pictures of the display case; terribly tempting. ;) Get there early as there's not a lot of seating - or you might have to take your cake(s) home.

Yelp
Adorable Japanese French patisserie is small, but filled with many choices of delicious looking desserts. We went with a matcha, strawberry cream layered cake and a mango coconut mousse. The matcha cake was light and airy like the cakes in Japan. Delicious with a cup of tea if you can snag a spot in one of their tiny tables. I did not like the mango mousse. It wasn't flavored strong enough and had too much gelatin for my taste, but my dining partner really liked it so to each their own! Next time I would love to try the passion fruit tart. It looked wonderful!

Yelp
Great Japanese inspired desserts! Probably some of the best you can get in London. The green tea cake with white chocolate shavings is amazing. Not sugary sweet at all, full of matcha flavour. I really like the desserts at Yauatcha and while Lanka doesn't match it in terms of artistry and complexity, tastewise it is definitely on par. And cheaper too!

Yelp
This is a gem of a spot, a patisserie with a Japanese chef at the helm. You'll see this mash-up in some of the ingredients used: green tea, adzuki bean, sesame. The shop is small but bright, with several small tables at the back for those who can't wait to make it home before tucking in to their treats. The macarons have garnered quite a following in London. They have - rough guesstimate - 6 - 8 flavours on offer, ranging from the standard vanilla to the more exotic Earl Grey. I like them very much; what they might lack for in crispness is made up for by taste. The authentic almond of the meringue comes through perfectly, and the flavours of the filling are punchy, not masked by sweet. I am particularly fond of their raspberry macaron: the berry shines through tartly - a perfect counterpoint to the sugary meringue. I haven't tested the layer or mousse cakes (works of art, really) but can speak to the croissants and macarons. Last time I was in there was also a croissant "casserole" (for lack of a better term) on offer; an elevated version of bread and butter pudding, I suspect. Lanka also sells a wide range of tea, as well as Monmouth coffee beans. I love bakeries that understand the appeal of a good cuppa alongside their treats, so Lanka's strategic decision got an extra nod of approval from me. Last but not least, the sugar comes not just from the product - the staff are extremely sweet. Helpful, considerate, they never rush my (very important!) choice, and always pack things up carefully. Yelp note: great website with extensive details re: celebration cakes. CELEBRATION CAKES! What a festive term. I've got my eye on a pear mousse for an upcoming birthday...

Yelp
Just cake I like the cake I had: Pear mousse and Green tea pudding, this earned 3.5 stars. The taste were very delicate as it was not too sweet and heavy but I felt something was missing. Maybe some accent was needed. I found the appearance of cake were too modest. I could not feel eat me message from them. The venue was very tiny which has only two small tables, thus there was no remarkable atmosphere to enjoy its experience.

Yelp
It was under my expectations. I ordered strawberry mill fill and green tea n lemon tart but it was not taste that good. Lemon tart was too sour and other two were both soso.

Yelp
I ate this roll cake at a home party brought by one of them. There were 8 Japanese people at the party. But all of them already knew this popular cake shop. also have been there before. It seems quite popular especially among Japanese since the taste of those cakes are very delicate and exquisite like ones sold in Japan. As for this roll cakes, the fresh cream inside was quite different from foreign cakes.I was blown away with that. I didn't expect I could eat such a Japanese cake in London. I will definitely go there to buy cakes soon ; )

Yelp
This is without a doubt one of my favourite patisseries in London. The sublime flavour combinations, deft precision and execution is truly art worth be holding. Top tip: you must try everything green tea based. I understand that some of the combinations might not be for everyone (but why?!), however, there's always something here for everyone - from the adventurous to the safe players. There's an excellent tea and coffee selection on offer. Be forewarned, the service is super friendly and you really wouldn't want to leave! Oh and disability friendly too boot. Seriously, Lanka exceeds almost every expectation of even the most seasoned perfectionist!

Yelp
So yummy! Went in intending to get the chocolate roll cake and walked out with that, the green tea chocolate gateaux, the green tea strawberry cake, the lemon tart (meant to get the passion fruit mousse but oh happy accident), vanilla and sesame macaroons (the latter being so good that I can't wait to go back for more) and couple of other cakes that I forget. And their selection of teas is not bad either. I worried that I might regret my impulsiveness but my concerns vanished with every bite I shared with my friends. Like I said, so yummy! The cakes were light and fluffy, with delicate, not too sweet flavours. The lemon tart had a delightful zing that reminded me of home-made lemonade. The service was good. The lady at the counter let me take my time, but obviously knew her stuff when I asked her questions. The patisserie was clean and well-lit but with a very small seating area.

Yelp
Lovely little cake shop with fabulous customer service. I went in to pick up some pastries for a birthday party. The customer service was friendly and really helpful in helping me pick out the best pastries and including a special birthday message as well in chocolate. They have really unique items such as a green tea eclair and a large passion fruit macaroon pastry. I will return again!

Yelp
Exceptionally tasty!! I live so near to this place but never noticed until one of my friends took me. Everything is so prim and proper including the cakes!! I had a Salted Caramel Tart with an Earl Grey tea which was like a piece of heaven after a long day at work. The cakes are not heavy or too sweet - a French patisserie with a Japanese touch - which makes it even more tasty. Love this place and definitely coming here more often!

Yelp
Love this place, best fresh cream cake in london. I live somewhere near canary wharf, and i drive almost an hour for these cakes, we order cakes from lanka for all the big days in our family, I have tried most of the cakes and definitely strawberry green tea cake or rolls are the best. I would strongly advise go their earlier to avoid disappointment, especially on special days. Sometimes i just can't help checking its FB and slobbering in front of the screen...haha.. i am a bit exaggerated, and i do concern about my appearance.

Yelp
Happened to walk by this place the other day and popped in for a tea and a monburan. The tea, a green/strawberry blend, was nice, but the dessert was less so: the Mont Blanc had the normal toppings, candied chestnut w/fresh cream and frosting on it but instead of puff pastry there was a muffin underneath... also no tea sets means that my cup of tea and cupcake monburan set me back an amount significantly northward of a fiver... Would I go to this place again...mehhhybee...

Yelp
The best fresh cream cakes in London and possibly in he world. Nice tea to accompany too. Come early otherwise the cakes will run out quick

Yelp
Amazing cakes! In my opinion they have the best cakes in London. My personal favourite is the green tea strawberry cake. Simply delicious!
