The restaurant interior has an interesting historical theme and is beautifully decorated. Wide variety of food choices but taste wise is pretty average. Do try their recommended Boat of Nine Satays which offers a various types and flavors of satay. Overall, a good option for dinner.

For International guests, the ambience and presentation make it fine dining for Indonesian sampling from Central Java. Locals however might feel the food is very good, but maybe commonly found and therefore overpriced (it’s fair comment, perhaps like going to Wolfgang Puck for a hamburger). Highly recommend though if you want high quality local food served in a historical ambiance.

Lara Djonggrang is truly one of Jakarta’s hidden gems. The moment you step inside, you are transported into a different world filled with history, culture, and mystery. The restaurant’s interior is stunning—an eclectic mix of antique Javanese artifacts, dimly lit lanterns, and dramatic decorations that feel like walking into a living museum. Every corner tells a story, making the dining experience more than just about food, but also about atmosphere and heritage. The menu offers a wide variety of authentic Indonesian dishes, each prepared with great attention to detail. The flavors are rich and deeply satisfying, highlighting traditional recipes from across the archipelago. Portions are generous, and the presentation of each dish is as beautiful as the setting itself. The service is equally impressive. The staff are attentive, polite, and knowledgeable about the dishes, always ready to provide recommendations and explain the background of the cuisine. This makes the whole dining experience both warm and memorable. Overall, Lara Djonggrang is not just a restaurant—it is an experience. Perfect for special occasions, gatherings, or even for those who want to immerse themselves in Indonesia’s cultural richness while enjoying excellent food. A visit here feels like stepping back in time, and it is definitely a must-try when in Jakarta.

I’ve been going to Lara Djonggrang for the last 15 years and the food has always impressed me. With some traditional interior decor there is a cool ambiance, if a little dated. The food however is excellent. We like to go for the platters from the various regions of Indonesia. Each one comes with 5 or 6 different dishes unique to that area, so you get to try a bit of everything. Yes, there may be more fancy restaurants in Jakarta now however if you want unpretentious, tasty Indonesian food, you can’t go wrong with Lara Djonggrang.

In the old building but love the food and service! The staff is so friendly and helpful to recommend you with the food options. We met with Ena, and she really do the thing to make sure you get the best service. Our recommendation : 1. Nasi bakar ayam 2. Cabe ijo masak ayam 3. Sate lilit ikan -> you will be suprised how good it is 4. The javanese coffee -> taste really good.

Wonderful ambience in this old-style restaurant serving good Indonesian dishes. The service lets the place down, though. Even with a pre-ordered main meal the food was very slow to arrive.
