An Autumnal Road Trip Through Alsace Wine Country

"Once you’re done wandering the picturesque streets, grab dinner at l’Arpége, whose gastronomic dishes are practically impressionist art. Take note if the foie gras confit is on the menu—it’s a must-order."

The dinner at L’Arpège was, by a wide margin, the worst dining experience I have had in the last few years. Across the board, the food quality, service, and interior decoration were remarkably lacking, falling far below the standard expected of a restaurant in a city known for its great cuisine, like Colmar. Culinary Failures: The most significant issues were with the dishes, which displayed multiple basic flaws: The bread served was doughy and had a strikingly sour, unpleasant aftertaste. Starter - Pomponnette: The flavors in this dish—crab meat surrounded by smoked salmon, sweet mustard, curry sauce, and herring roe—were profoundly unbalanced. Both the salmon and crab meat had an unpleasant bitter note, and the accompanying sauce was surprisingly bland. We were unable to finish the dish. The roasted walnuts on our other starter did not taste fresh. I noted with confusion that diners at an opposite table were constantly salting their food, a concern I quickly understood upon tasting our own dishes. Main Course - Black Hen of Moselle: This dish lacked the sophistication one would expect. The meat itself was not juicy, and the promised foie gras flakes were not noticeable. Most striking was the overpowering and persistent aroma of the accompanying mushrooms, which stayed uncomfortably long in the mouth and raised questions about its preparation. Unattentive Service: The service was inattentive, hectic, and generally failed to meet minimum expectations. There was a distinct lack of engagement, including the critical failure of the staff to explain the dishes when served. A specific lack of professionalism was observed when the waiter cleared our unfinished Pomponnette starter, making no remark and asking no question about the significant amount of food left on the plate. Separately, staff began cleaning a nearby table and then abruptly stopped, leaving a cleaning cloth as inappropriate "decoration" on the table. Interior and Atmosphere: The interior design was jarring and haphazard, lacking any sense of charming or quirky curation. The objects—such as plaster Madonnas positioned next to wine bottles and golden hedgehogs—appeared to be an arbitrary collection of discarded items placed onto the restaurant's shelves. This random and unappealing décor contributed to a deeply disappointing overall atmosphere.

Planning a trip to Colmar? You have to add L'Arpège to your list! Whether you're looking for a lovely lunch or a romantic dinner, this place is perfect. The enchanting garden atmosphere feels like a dream, and the food is just as amazing as the service. A definite must-visit for any time of day! ✨

We had a wonderful meal here. Greet food in a great setting. I had made a mistake with our booking but they were amazing and managed to accommodated which was both a relief and hugely appreciated. Would highly recommend.

Outstanding from the moment we sat down! Such a beautiful restaurant! We made a reservation 3 weeks in advance from Canada and I’m glad we did. We requested outdoor seating and it was lovely! The staff was very friendly and explained the menu perfectly! We had the Menu du Jour entrée,plat and dessert. I choose the vegetarian option and my husband chose the fish option but with the vegetarian soup. The presentation and taste was outstanding for every dish and an amazing presentation!! One of our favourite meals of the trip! We can see why it is rated so highly! There is a lot of thought and passion involved in their food! Thank you from Canada! We enjoyed our experience very much! The price is incredible for what you get!

A hidden gem in Colmar! The owners, Ida and Greg, greeting us warmly, even we didn't have the chance to stay for the dinner because their kitchen was closed. The atmosphere of this restaurant was so charming. We will definitely go back next time!

Nothing short of a Michelin experience, we are absolutely wowed by the food, the presentation, the ambience and hospitality at L'Arpege. The interiors are so unique, cozy and inviting. The owner and the staff are absolutely exceptional and take the time and effort to walk you through the menu, make recommendations, show you how to use their comfy chairs ;) and ensure you're having a good time.. Above all, they truly demonstrate their passion for food. We highly recommend everything we tried from the local Alsatian red wines to the complimentary vegan and chicken appetizers to the veal fillet and deserts. Special shout out to the vegan potatoes, mushrooms cooked in red wine, almond milk and truffle oil which was heavenly!! All the desserts sounded so tempting. We ordered the lime citrus dessert and the chocolate praline, both of which were out if this world. The combinations and flavours are so unique and indescribably good! If you're in Colmar, do ensure you make a trip to this restaurant - you will not regret it! We were lucky to walk-in and get a table due to a cancellation. However, I would recommend making a reservation in advance as it does get busy.

Magic restaurant!!! The day we visited the restaurant, unfortunately in Colmar, it was raining and we couldn't sit in its beautiful courtyard, but its hall is equally very modern and beautiful! Very polite and smiling staff. The quality as well as the quantity of the food is excellent... as for the sweets there are no words!!!! The best dinner of our holiday in Alsace!

Yelp
It was truly a beautiful experience at L'Arpège. My boyfriend and I stumbled in on Saturday night and they squeezed us in for 1.5 hour dinner. They were so accommodating and truly kind in every way. They knew I was gluten free and made sure to tell me everything that was gluten free, make recommendations, and they went out of their way to bring me gluten free bread. Every detail in the restaurant is gorgeous and intricate. They were just overall warm and made the entire atmosphere comfortable. The food was unique, delicious, and healthy. The vermicelli was delicious and the best one I had throughout all of my travels in France and Switzerland. 10/10 experience for food, service, and atmosphere.

Yelp
Many of my meals in France have been 'authentic' and local - but heavy!!! This is the only place that we've found that has VERY fresh and simple ingredients cooked with health and purity at the essence of the recipes. I've had more tasty meals, but we left feeling 'great' and fulfilled. 3 course meal for $17 was a great value as well. Highly recommended for a charming healthy lunch.

Yelp
Amazing food and staff. I highly recommend. We went for lunch without a reservation however I would recommend booking ahead.

Yelp
Nice little place tucked away off one of the many narrow alleys in Colmar. Spoke English well. Great appetizers and main dishes (even offered a less expensive meal for our two boys). Sitting in the back garden is pleasant. Good with kids. Order wine. They're all great. Overall a great experience for my family's first trip to Colmar.

Yelp
I contacted the owner in advance to ask if he could prepare my wife and I a vegan meal, and he could--and it was the best meal we had in France. We had come to Colmar for access to Alsatian wine, and the bottle of wine we had here, recommended by the staff, was life-changingly good. The food was excellent, too, and the staff so kind, helpful, friendly and accommodating. If you want a romantic, well-prepared dinner in Colmar, there really is no other place.

Yelp
A great find in Colmar, France, where a typical meal is meat, fish, cheese and cream. The menu du jour for lunch included a vegetarian course exquisitely prepared. The staff is outstanding and made this a complete vegetarian experience. The outdoor garden setting was very nice.
