Ea Astei, Near Guernica, Basque Country, Spain - Explore & Book

"OK, let’s do away with objective reporting and frankly declare our hand: we had the most marvellous time at Ea Astei. There were two reasons for this. First, the country here is gob-smackingly lovely, with forested hills zooming off for miles and sun-kissed beaches peppering the coast. Then there is Mertxe and Peio, the loveliest people you could ever hope to meet, who welcome you into their small patch of heaven with open arms. This land is theirs. Peio works above the main house in his project of passion: an innovative design company, making beautiful ecological houses out of glass and wood. They’re exported worldwide, but two stand in the garden for lucky people like us to stay in. Mertxe used to restore antiques, but now potters about making sure everything is ready for your arrival. You either stay in the main traditional Basque-style house (6 apartments of varying size and style, each utterly gorgeous) or immerse yourself in forest and garden (tiny rustic cabin or super-cool grand design). It really doesn’t matter where you end up as long as you end up here. It's ideal for groups of couples, friends, and even better for families. Ea Astei loves kids and kids love Ea Astei. Bilbao and Guernica (Gernika) are close, but you may just spurn them for all those lovely beaches. Highs The beautiful, peaceful, elevated countryside location; take lovely walks amid vivid green hills and fragrant eucalyptus forests Half a dozen sandy beaches within 10km - some for surfing, some for families, all very ruralCool apartments: choose from gorgeous traditional retreats or slick, modern spacesThe swimming pool has a terrace, sauna, hot tub and lovely views Good self-catering kitchens, simple restaurants a short drive away and wonderful local produce at Guernica's market Lows You’re lost in the hills, so you’ll need a car - if you want to stay closer to the beach consider their sister property Hemingway Riverview ApartmentsEntire bathrooms behind walls of glass in Vita and Okana won’t be to everyone’s tasteThe swimming pool gets rather busy in high season, and children always need supervisionThis is a seriously peaceful spot, but you’ll be aware of other guests during busy periods" - Tom Bell

I really loved this place. Good play area for the kids. Staff really friendly and I will always remember my stay here. You can see lizards in the bushes. The bedding and all are really comfy and it was just so good. Definetly recommend for you to come here.

We spent two weeks with our family of four in the ground floor apartment “Okana”. The apartment was spacious, very clean, well equipped, and we also enjoyed the large garden in front of the apartment. The owners were very friendly and helpful when asked for something but otherwise remained private. The locations is up a hill, which made for slightly cooler temperatures compared to sea level (nice for us). The swimming pool is smallish, but well kept and ideal for cooling off. The location is approx 15min from the fantastic laga beach, and the urdaibai reserve can be reached by car in 10min. This is perfect if you are looking for a quiet place to stay while being well within reach of beaches, Bilbao, Guernica and more. Highly recommend!

Ea Astei is a ‘little piece of heaven’ For me, it was the stillness, the beauty of the surrounding vista and the natural materials used to create my temporary holiday home that I loved! I also loved the small secluded pool and the beautiful gardens. The owners of Ea Astei know just what people need to feel comfortable and special. They have exquisite taste.

tl;dr: there are big differences between the flats, and ours was not worth the money. Starting with the upsides: the landscape is beautiful and the place is mostly quite (depending on the other tourists). The pool is very nice, the garden is great, and there is enough parking lots for everyone close to the flat/house. However, our flat (2 bedroom with 2+1 beds) was below another one and since everything was made out of wood, we could hear every step of them. Sleeping became a nightmare since you can't open a window, even though the air of this cellar smells moldy quickly, because the mosikos will eat you alive. I have no idea why the host did not install moskito nets. Instead, you have a window in front of your toilet where theoretically anybody could walk to any second. Since this place is out in the wild, this didn't happen but it's not my cup of tea. Moreover, the bathrooms are separated with fully transparent "walls". Be ready to elevate your relationship to the next level ;) You should also know that the next supermarket is more than 20min away by car. Since you can't really control which flat you'll get (except by how many people you are), I would not recommend this place, even though the surroundings are beautiful. It is too expensive for what you get.

We organized a weekend with friends at Astei, booking all the houses and the party room for our group. It was a great experience. Houses are fantastic, above all the one named Vita. Everybody enjoyed the party room and the other amenities, like the heated pool. Finally, the situation was ideal, in the middle of a beautiful forest and close to great scenic points along the coast. Definitely a 5 star rating and an easy recommendation!

Simply beautiful secluded spot in the hills, but within close reach of beaches and days out. Our kids LOVED the pool, as did we, and the accommodation was so comfortable and beautifully done. Rabbits and a puppy roam about, it’s idyllic. I hope to return.

We enjoyed 4 nights in the upstairs apartment in the main building. The apartment was comfortable and spacious, and the houses were set in gardens with views of the green surrounding countryside. The local beaches were small, sandy and not crowded, with excellent waves. Mertxe was helpful with suggestions about what to do and where to go locally.

We spent a wonderful week at Ea Astei this summer. The kids (two 8 year olds) loved the pool, the games room and the sports barn - and the plentiful rabbits!||We loved the peace and quiet, the views and the warm welcome from Mertxe to her home. ||It's a beautiful place to stay and from which to explore the wonderful Basque Country. Many thanks Mertxe. We thoroughly recommend Ea Astei.
