"Don’t let the unpretentious exterior and strip-mall location of this little deli fool you—Las Tortugas is deadly serious about crafting delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine with only the freshest ingredients. At locations in East Memphis and Germantown, father-son duo Pepe and Jonathan Magallanes offer a menu of Mexican street food highlighted by sandwiches called tortugas (Spanish for turtle , because they’re stuffed so full with ingredients like carnitas, chorizo, chicken, and beef that they’re shaped like tortoises). Patrons can order the same fillings in a taco if they’d prefer, then top them with one of Pepe’s specialty sauces, like spicy avocado green salsa. Whichever you order, be sure to wash it down with one of the fresh-squeezed juices or a traditional horchata for a taste of real Mexico."

Went here right before my graduation and, clumsy me, spilt a full cup of Jamaica juice everywhere. Felt terrible, but immediately the sweetest staff jumped up, even a kind woman on her break. Encouraging me it was okay, cleaning after me, bringing me wet paper towels. Their kindness shaped my mood for the day, I hope I get the chance to see these amazing women again in next times I go☺️

Google
The food is 💯 authentic Mexico City Mexican food. The owner Pepe is knowledgeable and friendly. He ensures everything is fresh! They have 2 locations. Both are fantastic! You can't go wrong eating here!

Google
I love the sense of pride that the owner seems to have for this place. All of their accomplishments over the years cover the walls and give such a nice sense of confidence coming in to dine (for me, anyway!). We started with some chips and guacamole. The chips are on the thicker side and taste great! Excellent with the chunky guacamole. For mains, I had carne asada tacos, he had the mole chicken tacos. All of the little sauces that they gave us to have with them were unmatched. You're not doing it right if you don't use them. My only even remotely negative comment was that my carne asada didn't get slightly crispy like you would typically expect. It needed just a little longer in the pan. It was seasoned absolutely perfectly though and I still definitely left a satisfied customer!

Google
They gave me food poisoning; bottom line. Twelve hours of hell. Almost called an ambulance. I’m tempted to be forgiving and say; everybody messes up occasionally but I’ve never once given myself food poisoning at home. Also, they forgot part of my order. And the food is a little over priced. I’ve been here several times and the food has always had good flavor. Poison aside, it is a bit higher quality than the run of the mill Mexican restaurant but not quite worth the price they charge. I won’t be back.

Google
I chose Las Tortugas today because of a recommendation. I chose the Queso Fundido for appetizer & enjoyed the flavors very much. I ordered the Al Pastor tacos for my entree & they were very flavorful. Served with pico, green sauce, avocado, cilantro onions all on corn tortillas. I ordered the citrus tea & it also was very good. Ambiance is pleasant & restaurant is very clean. Staff was very helpful too. I hope to be back very soon

Google
We had a great visit to Las Tortugas and appreciated the effort and time Pepe put into explain the menu and what his restaurant was all about. Pepe for President!! super nice and friendly guy. The food was fresh tasting and nicely prepared. Sure a little on the pricey side, but like Pepe said "you are going to say two things..oh it cost to much and then later you will drop money off in the tip jar saying oh this was so cheap for what we got and here is a tip!" We got the street corn and 100% recommend that. Also got some steak tacos and shrimp tacos. Not really sure we ordered off the menu. He just said let me know what you like and I will make you something you will love. Also get the Mango and Lemon drinks. I highly recommend those as well! we topped it all off with the fried cheese and unfortunately we were not a fan of it. great presentation and it had some nice spices on it but not a fan of the hard crisp texture. $10 was also a bit on the high side and I would say it was more of a cheese crisp then fried soft cheese we were exception. but maybe more of an expectation then anything at all. I think they would go good on a salad all crumbled up. Pepe- 5 stars Food- 3 1/2 stars

Google
Excellent, tasty, fresh Mexican food, friendly service, and a clean, modern space. The fresh guava limonada was a treat! A bit pricey, but worth it. Make sure to look for the daily specials before you order!

Google
best fish tacos in town .. best chicken or pork tamales, too—go and you’ll love the people as much as the food 🥰

Matt S.

Yelp
Excellent and most consistent Mexican food in city! One of a kind establishment! The Flan is a must!

Yelp
The food was excellent! I had the king crab tacos which were delicious and plentiful! It also came with chips salsa and guacamole. Pepe the owner looks after his patrons and told me you are getting plenty of food you won't need 2 sides since it comes with guacamole and salsa. Thank you Sir! Ambiance is perfect for pick up or lunch. I was here for dinner and like more of a bar scene. But still loved my beers and dinner. Note no alcohol other than beer.

Yelp
Excellent authentic Mexican food! Friendly service. This is a must do when you are in Memphis area.

Yelp
I have been all over the world & Las Tortugas is easily one of my top 5 favorite places to eat & their carnitas has no rival! This is not some cheap Tex-Mex cookie cutter restaurant...from the first bite, pure love & authentic Mexican family tradition is imprinted with every single mouth watering bite! If you love food...you will have "mouthgasms" when you dine here! I don't wish to offend anyone but the food here is so amazing..,that's the only way I can describe it!

Shannon D.

Yelp
It was good but way overpriced for the food. I understand it's popular but i don't want people hovering over me waiting for my table. It was years ago we went as you can tell we have not been back 3 people 1 a child and it was over $60 was not that impressed. Have not been back don't even really think about that place when thinking of lunch.
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
$25 per person. Food quality and freshness mostly justifies the price, but canned 12oz sodas for $3 is hard to accept. The restaurant business is brutal because value requires more than good food, it's the total experience. When everything was $15-17, counter serve and self-serve refills were ok because LT truest offers the freshest food around, but when you hit $25 (food, soda, tax) without table service and (at the Poplar store) a canned soda...my appearance is going to be rare.

Yelp
Came in for lunch with colleagues. They insisted it was worth the drive from Olive Branch and they were right! You order from the window then wait to be called up to get your food. Lucky we got there when we did as soon all the tables were taken and the line was almost to the door. I ordered the elote and the shrimp tacos. The elote was amazing, I had them cut it off the cob since it was a business lunch and I didn't want to look like a savage chomping on an ear of corn. It was so fresh and flavorful I ate it all The tacos were amazing, fresh shrimp and veggies inside served with sliced avocado and a couple different salsas. They give you home made tortilla chips to eat the salsa with as well Was well work the trip!

Nick W.

Yelp
The best Mexican food in Memphis by a country mile!! They make everything in house & there is no processed food in their product. Homemade chips, tortillas and all of the meats are prepared daily. If you don't like this place, you just don't like Mexican food because this is as authentic as it gets. Significantly better than maciels & tacos nganas. I will be back very soon! I ate the chicken mole poblano tacos which were fabulous & the elote which was to die for. Wish I could give this place more stars. I almost broke down into tears I was so satisfied with each bite.

Greg T.

Yelp
They have some great food here. Hard to believe it's in a strip mall. Pepe is quite the character. His son (Jonathon) runs the Germantown/Cordova location. The are both great. Pricy, but worth it if you are into higher quality fare.
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
This place was really good, I hadn't had a torta in a while and this place satisfied that want. The price I personally think is too high for the amount of food you get. It's good and you should try it, this isn't something I would go to weekly and spend $36 on a torta, corn, and a juice. I will be back, but not as often as I would like.
google avatar

Jessee M.

Yelp
The best guacamole ever! Everything was impeccably presented and tasted out of this world! I'm from the Southwest and have had millions of Mexican meals. I would give this 10 stars if I could! Clean, shiny, fun art, lovely people with great energy cooking. The owner explains to new customers personally how fresh and authentic his food is. Truly exceptional!
google avatar

Elijah L.

Yelp
Seats are incredibly uncomfortable, there's a TV that plays loud annoying American Indian music, but besides the awful seating and music, the food was really good. Just order pickup

Alexis M.

Yelp
Great food, as always. Gulf shrimp Tortugas are amazing. Love the daises, chips and guacamole.
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
If you are in the know, you know. My mom always goes out of her way to stop by here in the spring for one of their seasonal soups, and won't be happy until she gets it. Great menu, great people.

Carly N.

Yelp
Here temporarily from LA and when I heard the owners are from Mexico City (one of my fav cities ever!!) I knew we had to go. If you appreciate authentic Mexican food, this is it. Hands down best tacos in Memphis
google avatar

Sam C.

Yelp
Extremely overpriced snack. We spent $50 and had to eat another dinner because we were still hungry. Their $16 "veg torta" is simply lettuce, tomato, and mozzarella between two slices of bread. They serve it with chips, salsa, and guacamole. The salsa was good, the guac was overly blended and very smooth, and the chips were perfectly bite sized. I could tell they were made fresh. I will say that the mango fresca was delicious- highly recommend. If you're looking for a good torta in Memphis, I highly suggest checking out Maciels. Much more reasonably priced and you won't be hungry when you leave.

Alejandro L.

Yelp
Restaurant is overrated, food isn't awful but it's pricey and it's not at all that great. They claim their chorizo is from Mexico. It does not taste like so, more like packaged chorizo you can purchase at your local hispanic market. One thing I give this restaurant is its service, excellent service, staff were friendly and kind. I paid 17$ for an order of tacos, which came with 4 soft shell tacos, with guacamole, a lime, and red salsa. Corn chips, and some lettuce with 2 cucumber slices. Alongside an agua de horchata. To me this isn't worth 17$ I could get more for my money at a taco truck in a parking lot.

Yelp
Expensive ash but SOOOOO GOOD. Been coming here for years. Love the avocado torta, watermelon juice, and corn. So fresh, so delicious every time. Other Fortas don't measure up after having Las Tortugas. I tried the guava juice today I think they had it special and it was good too.
google avatar

Phillip S.

Yelp
Really great, fresh REAL Mexican food. Food is presented nicely and staff is very friendly. The owner was there and he was really friendly to all the patrons and you can tell he is very proud of his food.
google avatar

Mario A.

Yelp
They service and food is one of the most delicious and authentic Mexican food in Memphis TN
google avatar

Jay A.

Yelp
What a great little unassuming family restaurant. The owner (Pepe) is wonderful and friendly, as are all the family & employees. The food is authentic, fresh and tasty. The fruit drinks are very good and are simply fruit and ice with no added sugars, so they're definitely not "American sweet." Don't pass on the corn, it's amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
FROM A Mexican-American TO Memphis first all of you have a jewel of a restaurant in this city and it has nothing to do with BBQ it is Las Tortugas This is one of the finest Mexican restaurants I have ever been to. The work they put in on making a torta take there game to a whole new level. It is hard to put in to words but the easiest way to explain it this is the Mexican Panera. The man is a perfectionist when it comes to making a torta, and not only on the presentation but it is very good torta. I even look over the small details like the top of the bread has the marking of a turtle shell. I also have a agua fresca de sandia (watermelon) and it was very refreshing and not too sweet my only complaint is the cup was a little too small but the Agua fresca was excellent can't wait to go back
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
We were curious about Las Tortugas because we had heard about it from friends. Then we read some reviews on Yelp and decided to try it out. It did not disappoint! Pepe took our order - he is one sweet gentleman. The food is fresh, so it takes a minute. I ordered the shrimp tacos and elote. Everything was delicious!

Martha H.

Yelp
The food & service are beyond the pail. NOT Tex-Mex; rather it's for those who enjoy high end Mexican food. Best Mexican Restaurant ever. Restaurant is casual. Routinely I get takeaway.

Giovanna P.

Yelp
I enjoyed my tamales yesterday, they were tasty, but salty. The lady who took my order was really nice but be aware of prices. Incredibly pricey for a place with no table service.
google avatar

Gray Ghost ..

Yelp
Best Mexican food in Memphis, hands down...Pepe is a jewel, he loves talking about Mexico and all the beautiful things in Mexico City you never see or hear about !
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
Good, fresh, Mexican deli food, but needs a serious flavor wake-up call. For all the fuss they make about keeping it "authentic", you'd think the flavors would be smashing and on point. Instead, it's just standard fresh sandwiches and tacos in serious need of salt and heat. Chicken with lettuce, tomato, cheese, avocado, and light--nearly watery--sauce on bread shouldn't be 12 bucks. The taco ingredients aren't even flavorful enough to overcome the flavor of the corn tortilla. Anything could be in the tacos, but all I ever taste is corn. The fruit drinks are very fresh, and VERY sweet. One item that shouldn't be missed and slams the taste buds is the elote. Never had better elote anywhere, and I order it everywhere I go. Have eaten here for years, and I'll go back, just wish they'd amp up the flavor.
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
The king crab torta is the most decadent thing on the menu! It is incredible and of course Pepe and his staff are the best! Next time I'll take a picture of the sandwich to share. It was so good I had to dive right in. Honestly, come try one.

Yorle B.

Yelp
Back here at home in Memphis and decided I wanted some Mexican and came here. The food is amazing. I knew it would be when the lady, taking my order, told me that "no we don't have refried beans, that's text mex." I'd highly recommend this spot to anybody

Chris F.

Yelp
Good food, but very expensive. Two sandwiches, a quesadilla for a child, and guacamole was $55. Tasty food but definitely not worth the price. $18 per sandwich is pretty unbelievable.
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
They have the most authentic, fresh and delicious Mexican food in Memphis. I had the chicken tacos and they were amazing. They mangers/ owners are so friendly and the environment is so inviting and cozy. I will definitely be going back.

J B.

Yelp
The food is good but this place is really expensive. I would suggest they make some adjustments on their pricing. Thanks
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
The Absolute Best KING crab tortas in all the land ..!!! Try it with a n extra side of guacamole and a Fresh made Limeade ..!! Best $40 you may ever spend ...
google avatar

Whitney S.

Yelp
I love love love the food here. Downside to eating inside is like the original it's a small restaurant. The staff is always friendly, the place is always clean and the food is always excellent. Aside from seating this place is spectacular. I drive out of my way to come to either restaurant
google avatar

Ryan G.

Yelp
We are from california and we have been looking all around Memphis for months for some authentic Mexican food, so we heard about this place and wanted to try it. We'll here it goes, as we walk in there there's all these signs about how Californians don't know good Mexican food, so I'm thinking ok this is gonna be really good cause there comparing themselves to california, so we go to order and everything is priced so so high, still thinking ok we'll this has to be very good cause the price, so we get our horchata first and that truly was good, then we get our food and I got to say we were very very disappointed, the food had no flavor, they used tapatio on some of the food and everything tasted so bland, I highly do not recommend going to this place, you will pay over $50 no doubt for very minimum food, and all the while them being cocky about them being the best and how we really don't know authentic Mexican food if we don't like it. I will never ever go here again, maybe if the prices were like cut in half but the price and food does not match. Save your money
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
Went here for lunch as it was, Taco Tuesday! The food, atmosphere, and set up was fantastic! I highly recommend eating here as you'd have to go a few hundred miles south in order to get anything more authentic and delicious!
google avatar

Tina P.

Yelp
I took my boyfriend here because he has been disappointed with our lack of good authentic Mexican food here in Memphis. I got chicken tacos and that amazing street corn! He got the brisket tacos and chicken flauta. Everything was really good and on point just as it is in the Germantown location. The only thing I would alter would be the prices. They are honestly pretty steep especially for a canned drink(2.50) each. Maybe integrate lunch specials?
google avatar

Debbie E.

Yelp
The food here is premium quality. I treated myself to a bowl of King Crab soup. Plenty of crab. The vegetables were plentiful. The broth was lovely. I have never had a bad meal here. The people are warm and friendly. It's always clean.

Cody J.

Yelp
The food was decent but incredibly overpriced. I don't mind paying for good food and service, but this restaurant is also pretty much self-service, too. $40.00 for two people to eat lunch is too expensive for the small portions and average quality you receive.
google avatar

Rich P.

Yelp
I should have went to Lenny's subs next door. $18.52 for a torta?! I figured it must be amazing, so screw it, I'll pay the price. Was I wrong. Bread was terrible and not soft at all. Meat was like a gyro instead of carne asada. They gave me enough sauce to dip once. The chips were ok at least. Again, nearly NINETEEN DOLLARS FOR A SHITTY SANDWICH. If it was good, price would be fine, but this was just crap. And yes, I get this is "food from Mexico not Mexican food". I lived on the border in San Diego for 10 years and spent more time in Mexico than half the people working there. This place is for upper middle class people that want to think this garbage is real deal

Dragana R.

Yelp
Fresh, made from scratch, delicious! Probably the best Mexican restaurant in Memphis!!!

Margaret N.

Yelp
I've eaten at the Germantown location multiple times. Never disappointed. I ordered from here for convenience as it is closer to my house. I ordered 2 orders fish tacos, 1 elotes, 1 order steak tacos, and 2 horchatas. A $65 ticket. The avocados were all brown, the horchata had too much cinnamon, it made my mouth dry. Big disappointment Update: today the restaurant owner called my personal cell. He told me my post was malicious and childish. He blamed me for the avocados looking like that! Because it was a Togo order??? I will never go back.
google avatar

Srishti S.

Yelp
Deli Mexicana always lives upto the expectations. I have been a fan of their Germantown location and was super excited when they opened another location in east Memphis. It's clean and yum Mexican food with the freshest ingredients. Their avocado sandwich, black bean Tostadas, Mexican rice, fresh guac and that irresistible green sauce are some of my husband's fav vegetarian dishes. I love their shrimp sandwich, chicken enchiladas ( it's vey different from your regular enchiladas, more on the less saucy side, but very flavorful.) The fresh watermelon and cantaloupe juice are always a winner. The prices are steeper than what you would expect at a Mexican joint, but the quality of the food speaks for itself. They show pride in what they are serving and are always helpful in picking what to order if you are confused. It's one of our fav lunch places in Memphis!
google avatar

Faye D.

Yelp
This second location offers the same tasty goodness! It's a newer, roomier and bright and airy! We've been to Las Tortugas so many times and we've never had and a disappointing experience. The shrimp tacos will always be my go to.
google avatar

laura W.

Yelp
Every time I come here, I groan a bit when I see the prices. Everything is about $2 more than I want to spend. BUT...THEN I GET THE FOOD. And I REMEMBER. I remember why I come. Why the price is what is.... FRESHNESS. AUTHENTICO. DELICIOUSNESS MAXIMIZED. You have to get the elotes. Even though they can't get the same corn they have in Mexico, this is as good as it gets for elotes in the States. SO. Good. Tacos are sublime. They come with a little mini salad, limes to squeeze and some chips/salsa. I just think this place is so good.
google avatar

Ariel A.

Yelp
Authentic authentic authentic. So truly south of the border. Go with an appetite because you're gonna want to taste everything. The delicious smell as you walk in will tempt you. The open kitchen allows you to see the process in which they make your meals. Open and clean. The shrimp tacos were so fresh and delicious amazing
google avatar

Tod S.

Yelp
Amazing food. The real deal. Be sure to try the freshly squeezed juices, watermelon and mango are my favorites. The Guerrero steak sandwich is absolutely fantastic. Lunch is very crowded and seating can be a challenge but it's 100% worth it. I will add that it is a tad pricey but again, worth it.
google avatar

Mel J.

Yelp
AMAZING "tortugas"-- Of the two we ordered (de Camaron, $19.95, and al Pastor, $12.95), de Camaron (shrimp) was our favorite. The portions are generous, the ingredients are fresh, and the people who work there are so warm and welcoming! The only thing keeping me from a 5-star review is how overpriced they are. Delicious a sandwich as it may be, I can't justify paying $20 for sandwich any given day. If you're down for a lunchtime splurge, though, the sandwiches are certainly delicious enough to trump practicality.
google avatar

Justina G.

Yelp
2 words: Highway ROBBERY! These prices are fraudulent I dont care how good and fresh the ingredients are there is NEVER a EXCUSE to blow these prices up! these are TORTAS u charging $20!!!!!!! OMG This should be a crime. You are scamming people in Memphis who prob have no idea what the hell is going on. But this right here is ridiculous. I will NEVER return here. ATTENTION: a TORTA should NEVER cost more than $9 PERRRIIIOOOODDDD. Anything more than that is a rip off. Unless it has truffles and caviar in it that would be the only reason why. It's upsetting.
