Chile’s Patagonia Region Serves Up This Small-Batch Distillery - AFAR

"The Last Hope Distillery in Puerto Natales, Chile, offers craft spirits and a welcoming atmosphere for adventurers in Patagonia. The distillery, owned by Kiera Shiels and Matt Oberg, uses regional ingredients for its distinct gins, including the Calafate berry. Established in a century-old house, it also serves as a bar, providing a cozy spot for both locals and travelers." - Emily Gillespie

What a delightful place! Last Hope was definitely worth the wait. We stood outside for about 25 minutes and were so glad we didn’t leave! The atmosphere in the bar is electric and the staff (there are soooo many staff members) members were all incredible. They do both English and Spanish tours. The Calafate Gin was incredible!!

When we heard that a couple of Aussies had set up a distillery in Puerto Natales we had to check it out! We were not disappointed 😀 It’s on the outskirts of town but don’t let the walk put you off. Friendly owners, awesome friendly staff, great vibes and food to match! Great home grown gins too! There was a London Dry and a Calafette gin on the go when we visited. The Calafette gin was a knockout! Warning - unlike other places in PN, these guys get busy early and when it’s full you will be queuing! We arrived at 5.45 and snagged the last seats at the bar 😀. The owner did mention they get busy before and after the restaurants so make sure you time your visit accordingly 🍹

A must visit in Puerto Natales for Gin and Wh*sky lovers. The southern most Gin and Whiskey distillery (most likely) in the world. We went here before and after our W trek and the staff is what makes it so great. Super friendly and willing to have a chat and a laugh, they remembered us when we came back a second time! They also make ripping cocktails too so you will be hard pressed to have a bad time with the atmosphere and food/drink quality. Worthwhile doing the free tour at 530 as it also gets you in the door early because no doubt the place will pack out later in the evening and you'll be waiting outside for a table. The small walk is definitely worth it for some delicious Gin at the bottom of the world.

Who woulda thought that you could find a Grade A gin distillery and P. Nautilus? Wonderful staff, drinks, and atmosphere. Made us regret not having a checked bag to bring back a few bottles of the dry gin. One of the few “must go to” spots we’ve seen in the region. Very nicely done, Last Hope. It’d be great to come here again.

Lovely little gin bar and distillery, free tours at 5.30pm for English in the high season. Matthew was so passionate about his and Kira’s journey. And the cocktails after were great!

We had such a great time visiting Last Hope Distillery! The space has so much charm and learning about its backstory made the experience even more special. Their gin is beautifully crafted and the team were so welcoming and knowledgeable. Would suggest getting there early, as the wait can be quite long once they’re full. Whether you’re a gin or whisky fan or just love discovering unique spots, Last Hope is well worth a visit!

I had the best time visiting Last Hope Distillery when we were in Puerto Natales end of 2019. The owners were passionate about their product and the experience of everyone who walks through the door. Somehow in this part of the world whilst it was heading to low season, there were people constantly streaming in which speaks to how popular this place is. Drinks were fun and inventive and the snacks were made from scratch and yummy. So nice to have a place that is immediately kind and welcoming and feels like home, when we've travelled so far and had come back from a long day of walks. We bought some gin to take home to Australia, perfect souvenir. Don't miss it, all the 5-star reviews are right. Bonus for the well behaved pup during the distillery tour 🧡

Yelp
This is by far the best bar in Puerto Natales. Not just because of lacking selection, it would be a solid bar anywhere! They produce and use their own gin. Even if you're not a gin fan you should try them because they use calafate berry in their mix. It creates a unique flavor and bright red color. The food is also very good and that includes a vegetarian option. Arrive early because there will be a line to get in. Get a seat at the bar for a better show of the bartenders. Distillery tours are offered twice a day as of January 2024.

Yelp
Such a cool place to go to when in Puerto Natales! The service here is fantastic and they really take care of you well. We did a gin sampling, distillery tour, and then had the most amazing bites and cocktails imaginable. There special cocktails are totally ones to try! If I lived closer, id be back every day!

Yelp
This place was the absolute bomb! We had probably 4 days and 3 nights extra in Pureto Natales and we came here for 2 of those evenings. Some key highlights: - The 5:30 English tour was great and the hosts Matt and Kira are so knowledgeable and friendly to chat with. They answered so many of our questions on the tour, gave us great food recommendations and so much more! - The bar has great service speaking both Spanish and English. These are the fancy cocktails that you would get at a nice cocktail bar back in the States - Not a huge food menu but everything we ordered was great Come here for a nice cocktail to relax and enjoy some company with your friends or make new ones! I like that they have rotating monthly cocktails to feature new concoctions and feature a certain type of liquor. Their menu always has drinks featuring their brewed Gin, the standard and a Calafate flavored one that is ab it more bitter, and both are delicious. Smooth to taste and with some great drinks. I would get the liquor again in the states as one of my favorite gins if they sold it there. The food is also pleasantly good made with great presentation and yummy tastes. Most of the time we had the apps and all were good small bites.

Yelp
The southernmost distillery in the world, and also the most fun to visit. Incredible experience. Really a must-stop for anyone passing through. Even if you aren't into drinking that much, I highly suspect you will find something on the handcrafted menu you will certainly enjoy. Really talented bartenders, superb cocktails, fantastic service and incredible ambiance. Drink local!

Yelp
Simply the best!! The southernmost gin distillery in the world did not disappoint. The Aussie owners came to Puerto Natales to backpack the W and never left! Thank goodness they decided to stay because this cocktail bar is the hippest in town with a very impressive selection of liquor and their own homemade dry and calafate gin! (Soon to be available for international shipping!) They have a seasonal cocktail menu, along with a host of classics--gin and tonic, manhattan, negroni, whatever your trekking-weary heart desires. The seating is very cozy, with some good areas for larger groups as well. But be warned, this place gets packed fast and they do lock the door. We were so impressed with the gin, we bought bottles to take home to SF! The drinks here were the best 4500 pesos I ever spent in Chile!

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by some fellow backpackers who told us we had to try their gin. And a good gin it is! Their dry gin is very peppery and lively, and their Calafate gin is a little smoother and of course carries the fruit flavor of the local berry. The Calafate Berry gin was luckily not sweetened, as I feared it might be. As an added bonus, they will let you try a sample of each of these gins your first time in. They have about 10 cocktails using their house stuff on the menu. The Summer Strawberry was delightfully light, letting the natural taste of the strawberry and botanicals of gin shine through. I would recommend trying the Veggie Collins. The cucumber and green pepper really work with the natural spice of their dry gin. If you are hungry, they also offer a variety of tasty homemade snacks to go along with your drink.

Yelp
Our first time visiting Puerto Natales and other hikers recommended we visit Last Hope. What a great recommendation! Owners Matt and Kira have opened a remarkable place. Both their dry gin and the Calafate gin are excellent. I can wait for them to develop the infrastructure for international shipping! I will be one of the first customers . For a refreshing drink try the Sandia de Paine - dry gin with watermelon juice among the many ingredients. The next time we visit Puerto Natales, Last Hope, will be on our short list of establishments to visit.

Yelp
A wonderful find in Puerto Natales! The dry gin is one of the best I've ever tasted. The citrus notes are very prominent. Try the Gin con Ginger for a refreshing drink. Don't forget to pick up the T-shirt too

Yelp
Last Hope! Owners Matt and Kira have truly created a must visit destination in Puerto Natales. They are awesome people to talk to with a great story. They are truly gracious business owners, and the seem very happy to do what they do. And they do it WELL. I've been drinking a lot and for a long time and The Patagonia Ginger Brew was so good that I went silent after drinking it and for a moment Matt thought I hated it, haha. If you find yourselves in Puerto Natales you absolutely have to visit them.

Yelp
What a great find! This distillery has only been open for ~3 months, but I'm sure they will continue to flourish for years to come. The owners, a couple from Australia, are extremely cordial and a joy to talk to. And their gin, which is brewed in the distillery behind main bar building, is top notch. They add local herbs/berries to give it a distinctly Chilean flavor... the calafate berry variety was excellent! The bars decor is very sleek and they take pride in the elegance of their drinks. My only negative is that there is minimal seating, so make sure you get there early!

Yelp
AMAZING craft cocktail bar. Small, cozy, and friendly atmosphere. Great staff with a passion for their work. Would definitely recommend checking this spot out while visiting.

Yelp
I had no idea I even liked gin until I went to last hope distillery. The owners are super nice and provide daily tours. The cocktails are made with all fresh ingredients and are absolutely amazing. This place is not to be missed!

Yelp
A newly established cocktail and whiskey bar currently distilling it's own excellent gin adding local ingredients to their aromatics. Cute, classy and hip, it is popular amongst tourists and locals alike. The Australian owners pride themselves on personal service. Fashionable cocktails, whiskey tasting flights, distillery tours and house made savoury and sweet bar snacks are on offer. You can also buy bottles of their 2 types of gin and in future, whiskey too. All in a funky cozy bar only a block from the city centre.
