We were seated upstairs for this dining experience, which is a little austere compared to the downstairs hominess. But this was where the pianist was stationed, part of the weekend live music advertised on the signage out front. While the musician was quite talented, his performance was intrusive. The music was loud and made it difficult to have conversation at our table. It was clear the expectation was that we not talk during his playing. This would have been much more enjoyable had the performance been more in the background to complement the evening, rather than blasting out at a volume that caused everyone to raise their voices, which in turn made it even louder.
But Laszlo's has great food. Skipping appetizers, I ordered the Schnitzel Poutine, a flattened and breaded thin pork covered in gravy and poutine cheese and gravy over a bed of fries. The meat portion was large and satisfying, the poutine was salty and chewy. The fries were rather listless, knowing they were playing second fiddle to the schnitzel. I had a side of German potato salad, with pieces of skin on potatoes in a soupy gravy of tangy, sweet/sour deliciousness. The portion was disappointingly small, but very tasty.
To accompany my meal I ordered the Kentucky Barrel Aged beer, with was perfectly balanced with sweetness and hops.
Dessert was an apple strudel, which came with layers of crispy, papery dough, and apples and raisins in a delicious sauce. A dollop of vanilla ice cream topped it, and the entire dish had just the right amount of sweetness and spice, a perfect ending to our meal.
Laszlo's has a full bar featuring a fine lineup of Bourbons and several craft beers. They also have wine and cocktails. Sodas are Coke products. Our server Denee was so pleasant and sweet, answering questions and checking on us throughout the meal. Laszlo's features a column on the menu for more traditional American fare if you don't want to venture into Hungarian cuisine, but you can't go wrong with the authentic dishes. This is a great place I can't wait to try again.
