Charlie Hallowell’s Accusers Publicly Demand That He Resign

"A local restaurant group is facing public accusations of sexual harassment by at least 17 former employees; nine accusers spoke at a press conference with civil-rights counsel describing an oppressive workplace where staff felt they had to avoid the owner to survive and reporting bullying and attempts to smear them. The group says the owner has apologized and stepped back from day-to-day duties but remains a stakeholder as the company prepares to open a fourth location, prompting several managers to resign in protest. The accusers demand full divestment, enforceable anti-harassment policies (including an anonymous hotline), free counseling for those alleging harassment, and job references for employees who leave — framed as a package needed to restore dignity and healthy work environments. The company says it has launched an outside investigation, installed a new chief operating officer (a former VP at Rubicon Bakery) who may take on some shares, and is pursuing a nonpunitive reconciliation process; accusers warn they may pursue legal action if full divestment does not occur." - Clint Rainey

We stopped by this afternoon for a pizza. The NY style crust was cooked perfectly. We had a simple pepperoni cheese and mushrooms. Loved the marinara sauce. Cooked like we asked. True NY style. 🙂

One of the better, if not the best, thin crust pizzas I have had in the US. We also picked up a bag of bagels we had for breakfast the day after. A masterpiece of bakery, and I wish I had more of them. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner of the establishment and I was given a thorough description of their work on and love for bagels and pizzas. Lately’s is worth a stop.

The pizza is excellent taste great however the breakfast biscuit is delicious, but the sausage is something a little funky and the cheese premium milk. It was more stringy, so that was very unpleasant to be honest but other than that, everything else is great I take the pizza and the breakfast sandwiches.

True NY style pizza. I am from away and this is great quality for a great price. Looking forward to getting this again. Thank you.

Get Dave Portnoy up here! Amazingly clean, light, elegant, and ever so satiating a pizza! Where the crisp of the dough, sweet n tang of the sauce, delicacy of the cheese are all competing for top honors, however a perfect alchemy, officially my favorite pie in Maine. Worth the trip if you are out of State or in Southern Maine(same thing ;)). Top quality everything they do, definitely don’t sleep on their bagels, focaccia sandwiches, and next level curated bier selection. I’m blessed to live within 5 minutes walking distance. Off to an amazing start and get em while their hot!

Yelp
Recent visit with a friend based on word of mouth and that they sell breakfast sandwiches all day. I had an everything bagel with egg and cheese toasted. The bagel had seasoning on the bottom. It was not a normal bagel, it was more like a roll and I wonder if they are using the same dough for their pizzas. My friend order an everything bagel and cream cheese. It was toasted but the cream cheese was so melted the bagel didn't stay together and very hard to eat. Not to mention the cream cheese was liquid. She took it back and asked for one not toasted. She got that and was very unhappy with it as well. To her credit it didn't look anything like mine. It was hard and obviously not fresh. Server asked and knew that my friend was unhappy the second time as well but didn't nothing in the way of wanting us to give them another try. I also had a coffee and the station is located across from where you stand to order and pay so I was in the way making my coffee. The creamer was not refrigerated and there was no trash can to throw out waste. They also served pizza by the slice as well as a whole one. While we were there two pizzas sat out uncovered on the counter and they were selling slices for 3.50. Not sure why they weren't at least covered. I also heard the owner talking about frozen dough being taken out for orders. That explains the difference in quality. I wanted to like this place but it just doesn't deliver.

Yelp
My husband and I went in to share one slice. (We're pizza snobs from CT). Well. Finally a Maine pizza that is worth talking about and that could rival some CT pizzas! Fresh with crunchy dough, yet still chewy. Sooo good! In fact, we sat down and ordered 2 whole pies to share (see pics). Not too thin, no flop, but still foldable. Bridget was really sweet and the perfect employee. When she got busy with a crowd needing slices, she comped us free iced teas for the wait. Just really good pizzas and excellent (and friendly) customer service. We only get to Maine once a year now, but this will definitely be added to our list of must do's while in Maine.

Yelp
Stopped by for a bagel, not impressed. Will visit again to try the pizza. Promises to be NY style, so we will see. I want it to be a great place but not sure yet.

Yelp
Been here a few times now and will for sure be going again best pizza I've honestly ever had and the only pizza I have ever eaten the end of the crust usually I leave that in my plate, but not here!! Scrumptious!

Yelp
This is not New York style pizza. Ordered bagels and a pizza. Pizza was over cooked on the bottom. Ordered extra cheese and it looked like no cheese. Not sure it's even mozzarella. Bagels are undercooked and soggy focaccia bread was also not good.

Yelp
Terrific spot to grab a satisfying slice. Their proximity to Easy Street Lounge is a plus. Quick, competent service.

Yelp
Went here a few weeks ago at night for pizza. Pros: Appreciate the wide selection of both nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks, neat that you can just get a slice if you just want a snack. 3 notable "cons", the first two are minor. The last one kind of ruined the meal. 1) Though wide drink choice in general, weird no diet choices other than water. 2) We ordered a full pizza. We were told 30 minutes and it was more like 45. 3) We ordered a 3 topping pizza: Sausage, mushrooms, green peppers. The pizza came missing the sausage. We were starving so we ate it so we didn't have to wait another 45. Very strange to have missed that if only 3 toppings. The crust was good, and the sauce was fresh tasting but seemed to be missing Italian seasoning like oregano. I might not have noticed that if the sausage was present to add a little salt. Pretty bland overall. I would have given 1 or 2 stars, but they offered a full comp on the missed topping- only after they rechecked the order to make sure I wasn't lying, I might add. I didn't feel right about that as we did eat the pizza, so we got $3.00 back for the price of the sausage. I will also note this is one of those places that make you tip when you pay up front before you get service. I always tip 20% and this is a rare time I kind of regretted that. Verdict: if you are in Hallowell and want a full pizza, go to Burano's. If you are in a hurry or not very hungry, this is probably an OK place to get a slice where you can see all the toppings are there.
