How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Reykjavik, Iceland

"A popular geothermal outdoor pool complex in the capital area known for its range of pools and hot tubs; it embodies the local bathing culture and is recommended for visitors wanting an authentic Icelandic soak amid facilities frequented by residents." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. "If anyone knows their way around Iceland’s waters, it’s actor and former Olympic swimmer Ragga Ragnars. Before her star turn as Gunnhild on the TV series Vikings, she could be most often found at the country’s largest athletics center practicing her freestyle sprint. “Laugardalslaug has it all. It's in central Reykjavík, has a 50 meter indoor and outdoor pool, plenty of different hot tubs, and is a place people go to swim, relax and socialize all the same,” she says."

Iceland Itineraries: From 1 Weekend to 1 Month (Updated 2025)

"I unwind like a local at Laugardalslaug, Reykjavik’s largest pool complex built in 1968; it’s more than a pool — with hot tubs, a thermal steam bath, a waterslide, mini golf, and nearby garden and zoo — and it’s where locals relax after work." - Matthew Kepnes

Awesome! The weather was terrible, but admission was also free on culture night but it was not very busy. Plenty of room in all pools and tubs, except the 38c directly out of locker rooms. Very clean showers

Very big swimming pool with a slide, shallow pools at 38 and 40 degrees, deeper pots at 40,42,44 and 8 degrees. A salt water pool at 40 degrees and a steam bath. It also has a beach volley court and tools for athletics. Very nice!

The place is clean but has seen its better days. The facilities are great though. Really fun with the obstruction course and slides for kids on water. Many hot tubs to choose from plus a steam room. Good to spend a couple of hours after visiting the town centre. Good value for money as entrance was fairly cheap.

It is like a normal swimming hall with funny smelling water. 50m tracks and few swimmers made this really enjoyable visit

As a tourist I highly recommend going here to get s good picture of how the locals hang out and relax. The facility is so large and has so many options for pools. The best part was doing a progress from warm to hot to cold, and repeating a few times. They have pools labeled with different temperatures so you can do 38 degrees > 40 > 42 > 44 > 8 and start all over. There’s also a regular hot tub, a laying hot tub, a children’s obstacle course, a cool waterslide and pool basketball! They offer you a bracelet with a lock to store your belongings and be prepared to shower before entering the pools and follow their rules. No phones and food, which I think adds to the experience. Highly recommend!

🌊 Laugardalslaug – authentic and relaxing!! Laugardalslaug is a lovely public pool in Reykjavík — not too touristy, very authentic, and a great place to enjoy the local atmosphere. The outdoor hot pools, steam baths, and open spaces make it perfect if you want to experience Iceland like a local. The entrance fee is also quite affordable, which is a plus. The only downside is that the facilities can sometimes feel a bit neglected — not dirty, just slightly worn and in need of a little more attention. But nothing that really ruins the experience. However, today (July 8th, around 5:00 PM), I had a truly unpleasant moment with the male shower area attendant. There was a sign asking people to dry off before entering the changing rooms — which is fine — but before I even had the chance to finish reading it, the attendant approached me quite aggressively in front of others, telling me I “should learn how to read.” It was unnecessarily rude and humiliating. As if that wasn’t enough, after I had dried myself and was just drying my swimsuit, he deliberately turned on the cold hose and sprayed the floor (and me) again — something he didn’t do when locals were around. It felt very targeted and unkind. This kind of attitude really doesn’t reflect the welcoming and respectful spirit of Iceland. I hope the staff guy can be trained to treat all guests — locals and tourists — with the same courtesy. Still, I would recommend Laugardalslaug for what it is: an honest, local, and relaxing place. But be aware that the staff guy experience might vary. I would have given 4 or even 5 stars if only this staff guy hadn’t behaved so badly.

Lovely pool and staff. Two slides (larger and smallest) were not operable. Convenient hot dog stand outside for a post-swim snack.
