Iceland’s Eruptions Are Inspiring a New Type of Volcanic Tourism

"To experience one of the most creative ways Icelanders harness Volcanic energy, learn how to bake rye bread in an underground hot spring at Laugarvatn Fontana, a lakefront spa with natural steam baths, outdoor mineral pools, and a sauna about a 1.5 hour drive from Reykjavik."

The 28 Best Things to Do in Iceland, From Puffin Spotting to Bread Baking

"Fontana is a geothermal spa with a beautiful pool overlooking þingvallavatn, a rift valley lake in þingvellir National Park. Here, you can enjoy the hot springs, then pay an extra fee to participate in the daily baking, which involves tapping geothermal energy from underground to make bread."

10 Types of European Bread and Their Stories - AFAR

"A geothermal bakery where visitors can take a tasting and tour to sample piping-hot hverabrauð (rúgbrauð), a traditional rye loaf steamed in geyser steam for about 24 hours. The resulting bread is virtually crustless, very moist with a dense, dark crumb, and has the nickname brumari ("thunderbread") because it is rumored to cause gassiness. Making the bread the old-fashioned way—buried or steamed by hot springs—is now uncommon, which makes the on-site geothermal baking experience notable." - Chris Ciolli

We visited this place while passing by with a tour. It was very cool and the storytelling about the place was very interesting also. I would have enjoyed a freshly baked bread but I guess you would need to wait for quite some time before it would be done. But still the whole idea seemed very cool. Also be careful with the water it is boiling hot in some places so just look before touching the water if there are bubbles.

An awesome experience! Definitely get tickets to the bread tour if you are doing the golden circle area. Love the passion the team had for their work and preserving the old ways for the future. Nice facility, everything clean and well presented. The bread was delicious and they also have a cafe there with soup bar.

My girlfriend and I came here to enjoy the spa, since we found the Blue Lagoon way too expensive. It was a great place on its own, but given that it costs only a third of the Blue Lagoon, it felt like excellent value. Nice and clean facilities, with several pools at different temperatures. Loved that you could take a dip in the lake, and there were also multiple steam rooms using natural geothermal steam – very cool! There was also a minibar where you could order refreshments.

This place was amazing. Lovely pools of varying temperatures. Almost an infinity pool experience with the natural water and views in the background. Cool to see ice on the water and beautiful scenery whilst sitting in a hot pool. Taking a sauna and then a cold dip was amazing. Remember to take sea shoes and a towel. Although, there are free shoes to borrow by the cold dipping area and also little towels available to sit on in the sauna. We had an amazing time here.

Everything here was amazing and great! Except the water, the water was very dirty and had dead flies and mosquitoes. It is a family friendly spa so you’d see many kids running around It overlooks the lake so the view is amazing

We did the geothermal bake experience with teens and adults. It was neat to see the hot spring, and the bread it baked was a sweet moist rye bread served with loads of tasty butter and smoked fish. Free water and a cafe were also in the building. We did not use the spa pools, but they looked nice and others were enjoying them.

We did the bread tour because we saw Zac Efron’s documentary. I was not super impressed. It was very quick and then it was over. If you want to try it, I’d just recommend stopping by the bakery and purchasing the bread without the tour.

Laugarvatn Fontana is a great geothermal bath with a mix of saunas and pools, perfect for relaxation. One of the highlights is the cold plunge in the lake, which adds a refreshing contrast to the warm baths. It’s also less crowded and more affordable than some of the bigger tourist spots, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy Iceland’s natural hot springs!
