"To experience one of the most creative ways Icelanders harness Volcanic energy, learn how to bake rye bread in an underground hot spring at Laugarvatn Fontana, a lakefront spa with natural steam baths, outdoor mineral pools, and a sauna about a 1.5 hour drive from Reykjavik."

"Fontana is a geothermal spa with a beautiful pool overlooking þingvallavatn, a rift valley lake in þingvellir National Park. Here, you can enjoy the hot springs, then pay an extra fee to participate in the daily baking, which involves tapping geothermal energy from underground to make bread."

We booked the geothermal bakery tour and it was fantastic. Around 30 minutes including a short walk to the lakeside and then back to the cafe for sample tasting. The lake was so calm and beautiful. Rye bread was moist, soft, and sweet.

Beautiful place! After seeing a documentary film about this place we’ve been dying to stop by. Some groups were doing the geothermal bread baking tour, but we just sat at the cafe to have a pecan pie and cappuccino. Geothermal pool with hot springs and sauna looked amazing! Mostly we adore the architecture of the building. Modern, inviting and efficient design. Truly reflect the natural elements of Iceland. If you have more time, try to book the geothermal pool and the sauna beforehand.

Amazing alternative to Blue Lagoon. The multiple hot pools were all very spacious and had ample amount of seating. I was able to book here twice, the first in the evening around 6 and the second around 12 in the afternoon. I suggest going later in the day. It seemed as if all of the buses full of tourists had planned to go at the same time and loved taking photos of everything and everyone..

Rye bread tour was not worth the $$. Way overcrowded and you couldn’t see anything if you were at the back. I’m tall and still couldn’t see most of the time. Our host was very funny and interesting also knowledgeable. The bread was delicious and the smoked trout was the real prize winner. You literally watch him dig up a pot and cut the bread up. If you just want to try the bread and trout you could order it from the cafe. Pictures were after the fact.

Amazing spa to relax at, especially while it was snowing. The staff were amazing and shifted my geothermal bread baking tour free of charge due to road closures. Tour was lovely and informative, and rye bread with butter and trout was delicious

Had an amazing time at the geothermal spa. Arrived in the evening and got to watch the moon rise over the lake. Changing facilities were spacious and clean. Wide variety of pools, saunas and steam rooms, plus you can cold plunge in the lake.

Our Christmas visit to Laugarvatn Fontana turned out to be delightfully memorable, despite a rough start with the weather. A heavy snowfall made us late for our morning bread-making class, but the friendly staff was incredibly accommodating, rescheduling us for the afternoon session. This unexpected change gave us the perfect opportunity to dive into the geothermal pools. Laugarvatn Fontana offers several pools with varying temperatures, and my favorite was the organically shaped one along the river. It’s a unique spot that feels like a natural part of the landscape. The saunas, boasting serene lake views, were aesthetically pleasing and surprisingly affordable at just $40 per person, a steal compared to other local options. The bread-making class was a cozy affair, set against the snowy backdrop of Christmas Day. Although the class was brief, lasting about 10 minutes with a focus on the geothermal heating process used to bake the bread, it was fascinating. However, I felt the experience could be enriched to justify the cost. Each class makes a loaf of bread for the next day, and while tasting the warm bread served with butter and smoked fish was heavenly, the overall educational component was a bit lacking. For the price, adding more depth or interactive elements to the bread-making could enhance the value. Despite this, the delicious bread and the charm of the setting made it a worthwhile visit. If you find yourself at Laugarvatn Fontana, the geothermal pools are a must, and if you have a penchant for unique culinary experiences, the bread class is enjoyable—just set your expectations right for a brief but tasty lesson.

There is a restaurant in the lobby of the spa and the soup was AMAZING. I personally liked the bread that could be coated with pesto. In the spa there is 4 pools where one of them is natural, I liked that one the most. There is also 2 steam saunas and one Finnish sauna. The steam saunas smelled sulfur.
