Yelp
My partner and I had a very upsetting experience at this place. The order taker/manager was really gruff when we entered. The place looked charming enough and the food looked pretty good and we were hungry so I thought maybe this was due to the challenge of keeping the line in order and COVID compliant.
Long story short. My partner is Black, I am white. The order taker told us we would have to take our orders out to the street as there was no room on their patio. This turned out to be false. Even though the order taker/manager was protected by a glass window that hung in front of him, he complained that my partner's perfume was irritating him so he immediately put on a mask. Respecting the man's discomfort, my partner went out to wait for me on the patio where I brought our coffees and waited for our meals to be delivered.
Contrary to what we had been told there was PLENTY of space to eat on the patio and comfortably keep social distance. OK, maybe the manager wasn't aware of the situation.
My food arrives in a reasonable amount of time. I figure, my partner's food is not far behind but after 20 minutes and a plate of cold huevos rancheros in front of me, I go back in to ask the manager what's up with our order. He tells me he will check but that I have to leave the order area because its too crowded. So I go back out and wait another 10 minutes. Still no food and my plate is not looking too appetizing. So I ask one of the servers if he can check. At this point, my partner is frustrated and says she just wants to go. So I ask the server for reimbursement as we never got our meal and my food is no inedible. The young man disappears inside. Another 5 minutes or so pass so I go inside to find the manager handing the server some change which turns out to be the $16 or so reimbursement for my partners dish.
At this point, I'm a tad annoyed so I tell the guy, my breakfast is cold from waiting and I would like to be reimbursed for the entire order (added note, you tip ahead of time at this place when you place your order and I had tipped 20%). The guy tells me I will have to wait for him to complete taking another order. So I tell him that we've already waited a half an hour but if I have to wait, maybe I'll just tell all the folks in line how we were treated. He scrambles to give me the rest of my cash (btw I paid with a card).
Now I honestly can't say if this guy is truly racist but he sure was negative to us all the way through. Maybe he was really irritated by my partner's perfume, maybe he truly didn't know there was room on the patio, maybe they just messed up and forgot our order but in addition to all that he was gruff, rude and hostile. Whatever the case, Black people and mixed couples should be wary of this place, in my opinion.
