We made our reservation months in advance, eager to experience a bird’s-eye view of the F1 circuit and celebrate a birthday. This was our second stop for the evening after dining at Firangi, and my cousins and I were genuinely looking forward to it. Unfortunately, the experience began on a sour note.
As we approached the elevator, a staff member blocked our way, asking where we were going and whether we had a reservation. At first, we assumed it was standard protocol—until we noticed that other guests, particularly East Asian and foreign visitors, were allowed through without being questioned.
Upon arriving at LAVO, we greeted the receptionists and mentioned our reservation, politely requesting a table al fresco with a view or at least a glimpse of the racetrack. Instead of accommodating us graciously, the receptionist—who happened to be a fellow Filipino—responded in a condescending tone, dismissively stating that such seats required a minimum spend of 100 SGD. Feeling uncomfortable, we complied and followed her to our assigned table, only to notice how warmly she interacted with other diners compared to us.
The unwelcoming treatment dampened our mood and appetite to the point that we considered leaving. Fortunately, other staff members noticed our unease and made an effort to lift our spirits. When we asked another server about the supposed minimum spend, we were told there was no such policy for the area we had requested—though by then, it was already fully occupied and the race qualifying has already started.
We decided to stay for a light meal, ordering cocktails and wine paired with a pepperoni pizza. To their credit, the pizza was excellent, crispy, flavorful, and perfectly complemented by their olives and olive oil served with complimentary bread.
As we prepared to settle the bill, we were pleasantly surprised with a small birthday cake from the staff. They even allowed us to take a quick look at the viewing area overlooking the racetrack. Although the F1 qualifying had already ended, the city lights and panoramic view offered a satisfying close to what had started as a disappointing evening.
In the end, LAVO’s food and most of its staff redeemed the experience, but the initial lack of hospitality, especially from the reception—left a lasting impression that fell short of the restaurant’s prestige and our expectations for such a highly anticipated visit.
