Since I was a child, I knew about Lawang Sewu from TV shows that said you might see the ghost of a Dutch woman there. That’s why this place felt a bit scary to me at first.
But thankfully, the government preserved this building because of its strong historical connection to the railway industry. It used to function as an office related to train operations and ticket administration. Considering that Semarang Tawang Station is known as one of the oldest railway stations (I read that information at the station), it makes sense that this office was built here during that time.
Instead of seeing ghosts, you’ll probably find more than 30 cats and around 60 pigeons wandering around the area. It’s actually amazing and gives the place a magical atmosphere rather than a scary one.
Don’t worry if you get hungry — they have UMKM food stalls, as well as craft and merchandise stores inside the complex.
The entrance ticket is only 30K, including an informational video. They also offer a tour to the kavalering), but you can ask the staff for more detailed information.
So I must say, if you go to Semarang, this place is absolutely a must-visit. I give it 5/5!
