We had a wonderful stay at this hotel. Our room was upgraded, and the hotel also surprised us with sparkling wine and a small cake for a birthday, which was a really thoughtful gesture. The breakfasts were amazing, and the location is excellent. It’s a bit pricier, but worth the value.

We were in Sintra for only one night. So glad we stayed at Lawrence's! The room--and its balcony--were beautiful! The staff was so kind and helpful. I have not had a better experience. Whoever manages this hotel deserves a raise. Five stars are not enough.

A highlight of our two week visit to Portugal were the nights we spent in the wonderful and very welcoming Lawrence's Hotel. Located between the restaurants of Sintra's pleasant historic center and the grand mansions and palaces Sintra is known for, Lawrence's Hotel was an excellence base from which to explore the area... if you can make it away from the comforts this hotel offers! Lawrence's claims to be the oldest hotel anywhere in Portugal or Spain, dating back to the 1750s. In its tranquil setting in sublime Sintra, it has rightly been host to figures such as Lord Byron (where he began writing Childe Harold's Pilgrimage) and Eça de Queiroz. The cozy hominess of its rooms and public spaces are perfect for curling-up with a book and a nice glass of port. The creaky wood floors, tiles, and antique furniture are enough to make one feel at home in another era... but updated where essential! The fixtures in our suite's bathroom, and the water pressure, were ample, and there were many outlets to charge those devices that, hopefully amidst the scenery of Sintra, at which you will scarcely care to glance. Just as special as the comforts of the hotel are its people: rarely have we ever been made to feel so welcome! From Amanda's enthusiastic greeting at the front desk, to the volunteered assistance up the stairs with our bags by the staff from the kitchen, to the delightful breakfast buffet serving the freshest fruit and some of the best pastries in Portugal (if that's possible), and a packed breakfast for our all-to-early departure, our only regret was that we could not stay longer. A visit to Lawrence's is best for those without a car: they can arrange transportation, and a car is hardly needed to see the sights around town. Parking is available (in a 500-year-old historic building no less, when the free street parking is taken), but as with any driving in the historic center of town, streets are steep and narrow, and maneuvering can be a bit tricky, plus a pass is necessary to drive on the hotel's street (which must be obtained before arrival, so ask). We look forward to our next chance to stay with them!

Service at the restaurant was pretty average at best …. Until Armando came along! He is amazing, great service, funny and made it great. Cannot say thanks to him enough and he is a massive asset to your team.

I booked a single room here via Agoda and paid about $170/night for a stay of six nights. Location is insanely good--you can walk to Biester Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and Seteais Palace. One minute from bus stop that will take you to Monserrate and Cabo da Roca. Short walk to tourist info center and National Palace. Outstanding breakfast buffet that includes smoked salmon. Restaurant was too expensive for me to eat lunch or dinner there. Room was not huge but not cramped, either. Good bathroom with excellent shower pressure and endless hot water. Excellent wifi. Minifridge. Bar and spa on-site. Staff can be very junior and lacking experience. Room won't blow you away, but remember: you're paying for the location and the history of the hotel...

My husband and I spent one night in Sintra, which is not enough, after celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary traveling through Portugal. This was our final night and what an absolute treat! Perfect location and we were able to grab one of the three parking spots out front which was a true gift. This hotel is so special and Sintra is unbelievably beautiful.

This is not a 5 star hotel, more like a 3 in any normal environment (and then only if tidied up a lot). In order to be fair, I will list the positives and negatives.|Positive: location, charm and overall ambiance- if you like a slightly dated, slightly shabby feel.|Negative: the bathroom was a disgrace for a hotel aspiring to be 5 stars. Towel rail‘s (which obviously did not work) electrical connection severed at the wall with possible live wire potentially exposed, plastic fitting sellotaped to the rail. Electrical socket directly over bath/ shower!! Shower curtain fixed to the wall insecurely. Shabby, not thoroughly cleaned. |Coffee machine in room looked as if it had cost 20 euros . If you wanted more than 2 coffees you had to pay for the extra sachets - unbelievable at the room rates being charged.|Staff were pleasant and helpful but those we met were obviously inexperienced and poorly trained. ||In summary, it looks as if there has been very limited proper maintenance carried out on the rooms in this hotel for a long time ( I have seen these problems highlighted in reviews on other sites for different rooms, so they are not just a one-off). Some of the things we saw are potentially dangerous. |If the owners invested in bringing the rooms to a decent standard, this could indeed be a lovely hotel. The cheapskate attitude towards things like the coffee machine and rationed supplies does not indicate that this is likely.

Absolutely delightful historic place to stay within easy walking distance of historic Sintra. The service was exceptional, and our room was a fantastic combination of historic, comfortable, spacious, and fun.||We spent two nights and could have easily spent additional nights exploring the beautiful area with our hotel, being exceptionally well situated in the midst of this historic district

Yelp
We ate dinner here after my sisters wedding. Service was amazing. Everything was coordinated perfectly. 5/5 Food - The tomato sauce in the Ricotta and Spinach Tortellini dish was pretty good. You can taste the natural flavors of the tomato in the sauce. It blended great with the home made pasta. 3.5/5 Im not huge on fish but the braised salmon was good. If you like fish, you would enjoy this dish. Desert - Different from American apple pie. I enjoyed the crust the most. Sweet, layers of flaky crust on top of crust. Pair the crust with the ice cream. 3/5 Get their orange juice. Best orange juice I've ever had. Freshly squeezed.

Yelp
I fell in love with this place! It's charming and rustic style are instantly welcoming. ALL of the staff we met went above and beyond to make our experience special. The location was perfect for a easy walk to attractions and the town center. A massage at the spa was definitely worth it and a highlight of our trip. Would 100% stay and recommend this place again!

Yelp
This is a small touch of elegance in the magical village of Sintra. It feels like a country house from Merry Old England rather than a Portuguese hotel, but all of this is part of the charm. It has been open for hundreds of years and all of this time is condensed into the present-day wonder of the hotel. The fabrics and furniture are strong, rich and full of heritage. I loved every minute of my stay. The one thing that stands out from the Lawrence Hotel above all others is the view. This is a thing to spend time over, so don't be in a rush when visiting the place. I stayed in the Jane Lawrence Room, which is a well-appointed double room. It feels opulent but without pretensions. There is old-world charm and modern amenities. Just what you would want from a hotel. Think of the Lawrence Hotel when you are looking to stay in Sintra and you won't be disappointed. It is a place of tranquillity and calm. The surroundings add to this feeling and make the hotel an even more fabulous place to spend time. This is the place to relax and find yourself away from all the business of city life in Lisbon. That's just what I did - now it is your turn.

Yelp
Had dinner in the restaurant, and although the service was really nice as was the atmosphere, the place was nearly dead inside. We were only one of two couple in the entire place. The food was good, but he portions were small. It was a little pricey, but give it a try you might like it. They serve lunch outside and have a pleasant view. I'm not too sure I would return because there's a bunch of places I have not tried in Sintra, but this place is an option.
