The self-proclaimed "oldest restaurant of Montmarte" was recommended to me by a friend who moved to Paris from NYC as the best place to get confit de canard (duck confit) in Paris. Duck confit is one of my favorite French dishes, so I had to stop by and try it out! They offer a great deal: three courses for €25, and I ordered six escargots, the confit de canard, and a crème brûlée.
The escargots were absolutely deliciously seasoned in the traditional way with lots of herbs, garlic, and butter, with each juicy and plump snail easily being removed with the fork. I could have sat there eating a dozen more! I used the bread to sop up every drop of sauce!
The star of the meal was the confit de canard, served with thyme roasted potatoes, mushrooms, and green beans. The meat was absolutely perfect - a new personal gold standard for duck confit! The crispy skin gave way to a layer of perfect fat, under which was the tenderest duck leg meat. The sides were also beautifully seasoned as well, and I wanted more mushrooms! I almost licked the plate clean.
The crème brûlée was also perfectly prepared. I tapped the top of the dessert and it had that pleasant hollow sound, and spooning into it revealed a great custard, not too watery or thick.
I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to sample some great traditional French fare in Paris; it's also near the Sacré-Cœur so it's in a great area for tourists! Also, they had a really cool absinthe tasting program that I would have tried if I wasn't dining alone.
