We fancied a change from our usual Calais restaurants and chose to try Café de Paris, but unfortunately our visit was rather underwhelming. My partner's beef fondant was a nice piece of meat but he found the sauce very salty and the bread rather commercial-tasting. Again, my Bavette was a good quality steak and had been cooked medium as I had requested, but the Sauce Échalotte that the pleasant waitress had described was not a sauce at all but some very burnt pan fried sliced shallot dumped on top of the steak. The remaining oil in the pan was then just poured onto the plate, burnt bits included. Thankfully there was also a peppercorn sauce which I had not ordered, but which made the dish edible.
It was such a shame as the meat had obviously been of good quality but I cannot understand the mentality of a chef who would present it to a customer like that, he is either not a trained chef or has completely stopped caring. He lets down his colleagues and the establishment. Never again.
