I don't normally write reviews, but this place compelled me. If you don't make it to the end, my opinion is Chapon Fin is not long for this world.
First, context. Our party of two visited during the off season, right before the spring onslaught. It was a Tuesday. We were literally the only table there from 8:30-10:30pm. This was the first time we have ever experienced that, which I think is pretty unusual, even in the off season for a well regarded restaurant.
Next, the good. The dining room is impressive, it really is. I wish it was bustling with full tables, because it would have been a spectacle. The service was very attentive. They were quick to refill water, open doors, recommend wine, etc. I don't agree with any of the reviews critical of the service.
The bad. We ordered the prix fixe with wine flight. Perhaps this was a mistake, and some better reviews were of staple dishes on the menu. This is not our first prix fixe menu, nor with wine pairings. It was not successful. Some dishes were imaginative, but not executed well (overcooked scallops, slightly burnt tasting jus, or just plain old incorrect seasoning), others were executed perfectly, but just strange (think molecular gastronomy that comes out of no where, or disparate foods that just don't work well together.) Per the wine flight, the restaurant boasts one of the largest wine lists in the area, yet I can't help but think that if I dug into it, many selections would not be available. The selections were at least fresh - mostly because we were the only people there and no open bottle would have made it until Tuesday evening from a Sunday dinner. I will give the sommelier credit for opening a few new bottles just for us. Other than that, there was nothing of note, and a few we recognized as run of the mill table wine we can purchase in New York. I guess we feel like we overpaid in wine, which we expect when dining out, but we didn't get something new and interesting, which is somewhat required, especially when traveling.
Eating alone taints the whole experience, the food was never on point. The whole evening was just weird and makes us appreciate the other places we've been (which, in my glass-half-full mindset, is important to experience from time to time). I have to recommend you pass in this land of plentiful one star Michelin restaurants.
If you have gotten this far, and don't believe me, please ask your concierge for his honest opinion, I am confident he will agree.
