10 Classic Belgian Dishes to Try on Your Next Flemish Adventure | Condé Nast Traveler

"When you're very hungry, order carbonnades flamandes at Le Clan des Belges in Brussels: this turbocharged Flemish beef stew is cooked with beer (sometimes with a pinch of sirop de Liège), producing a thick, slightly sweet sauce and slow-cooked beef served in an individual casserole pot with frietjes for dipping." - Julia Buckley

Google
Very stylish out door seating area. The interior is large but family’s with young kids were sat all over when they could have been sat together. My food was very good, the Kwak was not so fresh unfortunately.

Google
Very nice place and atmosphere. Very good menú and typical dishes. Prices are on average with Bruxelles. The only flaw was the spacing a bit tight.

Alexandre Raphael W.

Google
Typical Belgian food in central Brussels. The food was great but very oily and fatty in the end. For some reasons we felt it could have been a little bit more refined. The staff were not really helpful as well. Overall it’s a beautiful terrasse in a nice neighbourhood and great Belgian food.

Google
Absolutely recommendable. The food was a 10/10. The meatballs, snails, and waffle were spectacular. The service was also a 10/10. The terrace offers a relaxed atmosphere with that Central European touch.

Google
A very authentic feel/experience. The inside is very beautiful and cozy and the staff very personable and polite. The food was fine, I was expecting more but i still finished my plate.I tried Paux dieu beer and i thank the waiter who suggested it cause it was the best beer i have ever had.

Google
Had a three course dinner here, which consisted of the escargot, the flemish beef stew and a waffle with salted caramel sauce. My favorite was the stew - super flavorful and came with frites, which were solid! Honestly, it was a great meal for a fair price considering pricing in Brussels. I would definitely eat here again!

Google
Visiting Brussels with a group and we were very happy to have one of the best waiters serving us. We arrived when the restaurant was buzzing and the waiter sorted a table of 8 very quickly. He gave us all the best recommendations and we enjoyed both food and drinks. And the interactions with the staff were also nice. Thanks for serving us

Google
I was looking for moule et Frites and, with high expectations , chose this restaurant on a Monday night. It was quite busy but I got a table immediately. I ordered the classic moule and was not disappointed, washed down with a very decent local IPA (Ludgard). Service was attentive, but not annoying, and the staff seem to enjoy their job. Prices were mid range, so it meant good value for money. in summary, a good choice.

Yelp
Last night in Brussels I had a craving - mussels and fries. The closest two restaurants recommended by Yelp were completely booked, even for a solo diner. Before giving up I decided to take a walk and see what else I might find - and came across this restaurant. To my delight, they had some space available so I was quickly situated at a table. Great ambiance of an old trattoria, just something heartwarming and exactly what I was looking for. I started with escargot which was pretty good (not amazing, but very solid), nice flavor profile, a little bit of garlic, and crusty bread to pickup all the tasty bits. I took mussels in white wine (one of the 3 types available) and they were simply delicious. Mussels were served with perfectly crispy Belgian fries. All in all, great experience. Excellent service, friendly and prompt. Recommended.

Yelp
Great authentic Belgian cuisine. Make sure you make a reservation in advance. My wife really enjoyed their Carbonnade Flamande, and we still haven't found one that can compare.

Yelp
Seated right away on Thanksgiving Day at 7:45 PM. They did have a lot of reserved tables though so it doesn't hurt to make a call ahead of time. I would also recommend it when it's peak traveling season. The seating situation is a little tight. Tables are definitely squeezed in for maximum capacity, but the servers are incredibly nice and accommodating. FYI - they only have menus in French so either look for photos ahead of time on yelp or have your phone ready for some massive google translate!! they have free WiFi so it makes everything more convenient! We got the white wine mussels and the Flemish stew (both came with a side of amazing fries!!). The mussels were nice and light and definitely enough to share for two, and the stew was the perfect amount of sweetness paired with tender meat. Overall, great service and great food with fair prices. Also love the bread

Yelp
We stayed at the Moxy and they recommended us here. It was SO good! We had the muscles in cream sauce, chicken with mushrooms in cream sauce, fried calamari with onions rings and for desert the banana "French toast" with banana ice cream. Still dreaming about the desert is was amazing! The muscles were very fresh and they were just perfect honestly. We had a server who spoke really good English and was kind enough to translate the entire menu for us. The other servers were also very kind, so service was 10/10. Restaurant was cute, intimate and inviting. Overall a great experience!

Yelp
This place was recommemded by concierge and it doesn't look like much on yelp/trip advisor but this place is definitely a great place for lunch/dinner. We had the foie gras, salad, mussels, mains; Brussels trio for a taste of duck, meatballs and beef stew all very good.

Yelp
My favourite Belgian restaurant in the area, big portions, nice decor, super friendly staff. Highly recommended

Yelp
One of my favorite Belgian restaurants in the Ixelles area of Brussels. When dining here, you can expect very heavy food. In terms of ambiance, design, and menu I would classify Clan des Belges as a Belgo-American hybrid. On one hand, they lift on the popularity of American hipster fare (burgers, nacho's, brunch) and have a bit of an American diner feel. On the other hand, this is very much a Belgian restaurant in its simple version of Francophone dishes (steak frites bearnaise, steak tartare) and real Belgian classics (mussels). So, the food is pretty heavy. Expect lots of cheese, butter, and meat. (We're talking about a Belgian-American food baby here so what are you expecting??) The Megacheeseburger is pretty much a big honkin' American cheeseburger, but it has the Belgian touch because it has reblochon, instead of the ubiquitous cheddar, on top. The prices are pretty good, I think. €16 for a sizeable steak tartare and €17 for a terrific hanger steak are a-okay in my book. The hanger steak is very tasteful, plentiful, and just plain good. The only gripe I have with it is that, unlike the other steaks where you can choose between different sauces, it only comes with the shallot gravy. This hanger steak with bearnaise would be my death row meal, but I guess you can't have everything. Reservations are definitely recommended. This place gets busy. Service inside tends to be pretty good, although you might have to be tenacious. If you are outside, however, it looks like things might be a little more difficult.

Yelp
In the heart of Ixelles, this belgian restaurant has a very nice decoration which makes you decide to get in instead of other very nice options in the area. You should reserve in advance because is pretty demanded. There are many possibilities regarding food. I got le cordon bleu and it was amazing. The quantity was perfect and the taste too. Presentation was also pretty cool. Waiters were very professional and very attentive. But, instead of having one waiter, we were served by 3. We did not have to wait or something like that, but it made me think if they are coordinated or just acting when there is some table free or asking for service. I recommend it and the quality and quantity deserves the price.

Yelp
Burgers and other Belgian specialities, but mainly burgers my friends dragged me to this place, (before known as Belgo Belga) the decoration has a nice vintage look with wooden boxes, dark walls and old storage lamps. not being a huge fan of burgers i've to say that it was really tasty and well presented. service is nice and friendly which is always welcomed. i've returned since then for a lunch and their offer is pretty cool fresh fish / meat and not very expensive +/- 12- 14euros

Yelp
So this is a pretty impressive spot in Brussels. Lovely decor and cosy environment. Good drink selection. The food was perfect. We got a varied selection off the menu and weren't disappointed with anything. The service was below par and seemed more confused than actual wait staff. I'll be back. Gonna try the burger next.

Yelp
I had the burger (1/2) and the cordon bleu dish. Honestly I am NOT a fan of Belgian food, so this was one of my most enjoyable meals during my visit. Everything was properly cooked and properly seasoned and pretty fresh. Burger was not the best, but certainly very good. Cordon bleu was very good. We shared the dessert spread. It was okay - maybe wouldn't order again. The ambiance is hip and lively and we had a really good and patient server. If ever in Brussels again, I would return.

Yelp
New teaser for Le clan des Belges ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3Am3C8RNtk&feature=youtu.be Very nice vintage atmosphere in the St Boniface area. Should reserve in advance !!

Yelp
The atmosphere is beautiful and I love the interior. Service was adequate and a bit slow which was not a surprise. But not only did I have to ask for things, but I had to find someone to even ask for anything. It was really, really not attentive at all. The prices are fair. I had the trilogie Belges which is a tasting of three popular Belgian dishes with fries. The fries were great. The meatball was really good and the stew was nice. My small three pieces of duck (size of a quarter) were very difficult to chew they were so tough. I haven't had duck so poorly prepared. The cost of the dish was 23 Euro so I would have expected it to be adequate. Overall a nice experience, but I would try something else the next time.

Yelp
Positive points: I loved the decor and I loved the concept. The fact that it is a brunch place on weekends makes it really nice. There are not that many brunch places at all in Brussels, so Le clan des Belges is more than welcome. And I have to admit that they're doing a good job. Negative points: the food seemed a little too messy, presentation wise, but I guess that's the "brunch" style, so not a big deal. The food itself taste-wise is pretty good, without the "wow" factor though. Apparently, if I'm not mistaken, they have another menu for non-brunch periods, so maybe I should give it another try. The big no no for me though was the service. Waiters seemed to be all over the place without knowing where to look, where to go to and had too many things going on. In two words, pretty messy. Our waitress forgot our bread and when we notified her, she apologised and told us she would offer us a free hot drink at the end of our meal. At the end of our meal, my husband ordered his coffee that was actually if his brunch deal and I was waiting for the waitress for taking my free hot drink order. But it seemed that she forgot. Well, we didn't mind that much. But then my husband's coffee order took forever. After a while, we asked another waitress who brought it in a minute. I guess our waitress forgot again... As I said, they were running like "chickens without heads" (French expression). So overall, I wasn't impressed. I just really like that there is finally a nice brunch place in this area. The place is not up to the level though I feel and has maybe become "victim of its success" (another French expression)? So I am a little disappointed. However, I must admit that I might still come back should I be in the area and give it another try, hoping for some more professional service.

Yelp
We've been here several times now. The food is good, especially the Belgian stew and fries, but the prices are a bit high. Service is friendly. The salad has so much potential, but serve real lettuce and not roots!!!! I was literally eating a bowl of flavorless roots. Thank goodness for the veggies and goat cheese that came w it.

Yelp
Cool vintage look, wooden wine box on the walls, unmatching tables and chairs, old barrels and dark corners. Busy and a big loud, Friendly staff.

Yelp
Highly recommended. Good options if you want Belgian food but also if you want more of a French style. This place was recommended to us by a tour guide who has lived in Belgium for 6 years. It was one of my favorite experiences on the trip. We went on a Saturday evening and even though we showed up at ~6 pm and the place had only a few tables seated, everyone needed a reservation that night. No wait list. The décor was nice, looked like vintage study or a little like prohibition era. The waiters weren't great with English but we didn't expect them to be and got by just fine. They didn't seem to have English menus but of course we were accustomed to many French culinary terms so it wasn't too bad. If you're worried about it, download Google Translater on your phone ahead of time. The beer list was bigger than most other restaurants we went to and they had a fantastic French wine list. They don't serve tap water. If this is an early stop for you in Belgium, they have a sampler with three very popular Belgian dishes that was excellent idea. I got a special as my entrée - pasta with fresh seafood and a sauce that was incredible. Before that, I got the onion soup and highly recommend it. They served it in a jar with a side of croutons. YUM. At the end of the meal, we got a round of digestifs and as you pay, they put a giant jar of candy you can enjoy something from. Great place, we'd definitely return.

Yelp
The place is nice located in one of the best area in Brussels but it stops there. Very disappointed by the food, especially the Belgian specialities. The service was slow and not very friendly.

Caroline E.

Yelp
Good value for money - the brunch is really substantial and tasty. But don't go if you are not really hungry or in any rush to eat. Service is quite slow, but I would say this is the best brunch place I have been to in Brussels so far. The burgers were excellent and the mixed platter with ham, salmon, scrambled eggs, salad, and onion rings were also great. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
One of Our favorite restaurants when we visit Brussels. Not a tourist trap. Reservations a must. Great fondues au parmesan (croquettes). Also recommend Trilogie Bruxellois so you can try three different, traditionally Belgian dishes. The sauce for the Chimay blue sauce is amazing. My wife got the chicken cordon blu, once again, amazing.

Agnieszka B.

Yelp
Delicious cod fish with sweet potato fries! Nice and cozy place, great wine. I will definitely come back.

Praxitelis P.

Yelp
Best Belgian cuisine ever ! Loved the atmosphere, the quick service and totally value for money ! We got a selection from the menu and nothing disappointed us. Moreover, the sweets in the end were a perfect finish for our dinner ! Highly recommended

Noah T.

Yelp
Cozy place. The food is really good and the service personal is nice. Looks my for some typically Belgian food? Come here. Worth it!

P D.

Yelp
Just walked in the place to have dinner. Was told that I couldn't have a table as I was just by myself. You have to be a pretty arrogant server to tell something like that when you have a lot of free tables.....
