This is a chambres d’hôte of great warmth and character at the centre of one of the most interesting and beautiful medieval cities in Burgundy. The Abbey at Cluny was the largest and richest in Europe and the Clos de l'Abbaye shares a common wall with the Abbey, which dates back to the 10th Century. Its location at the heart of Cluny offers a ring side seat to one of the jewels of medieval ecclesiastical architecture. The house, a very large one, was the first building to be completed within the boundaries of the Abbey after the revolutionaries of 1789 had sacked and destroyed parts of the original Abbey. The house was a wreck 15 years ago and was lovingly rebuilt and refurbished by the current owners. The house is entered through secure metal gates which border the main square in front of the Abbey and can easily be spotted by the large sculpture of a blue bull, whose head and horns are visible above the walled garden surrounding the house. The first thing you notice, apart from the exceptional warmth and greeting of the host, is the array of interesting objets d'art around the garden. These are replicated throughout the corridors and rooms of the house which, combined with modern and comfortable facilities, prevents this wonderful chambres d’hôte feeling like you are in a museum. A balance is struck in each of the rooms between preservation, conservation and modern comfort, which is often difficult to achieve. The silence of the inner city and comfort of the beds ensure a restful night and, an excellent breakfast, within the inner stone walls of the garden, enables you to start your new day refreshed and expectant for exploring this wonderful city. Highly recommended and my wife and I will definitely be returning in the near future.
