Best Paris Cafés for Experiencing the City's History

"A charming, pocket-sized spot beloved by artists such as Van Gogh and Monet, with a cozy interior and a small terrace perfect for cobblestoned street views and people-watching; very Instagrammable and best visited early on weekdays for a more comfortable experience, and reputed by some to serve one of the city’s best steak frites." - Vicki Denig

Google
Nice restaurant located in montmatre. I would recommend the onion soup, nice flavour and a good amount of cheese. Escargot was also nice. The clams I wouldn’t get; flavorless and definitely not worth it. The service was alright. A bit slow. They refused to open up the umbrellas tho

Google
The only thing I like is the location. The outdoor table is slanted so beware when you put glass down. I don't like the food. Most of it comes cold already. The frite looks like they were left out on the open and tastes sandy. The bread that comes with it is hard and sticky. I would not recommend this place to a friend. I don't enjoy the service neither, can be better during busy hours. I understand if the food is served slow but the attitude of the worker needs improvement. Service mind. Racist toward Asian.

We enjoyed it. Service was good: fast and nice. Food was good. We had croque madame and crepes. Crepes has strong alcohol flavor, I guess, they should be flambee a it longer. Chocolate sweet and tasty. Creme brulee was absolute heaven

Stopped in for lunch and had the muscles. I was expecting more of a sauce, not just a salt water broth. Tasty but I have had better.

I came here because O saw there was some history to the spot but that has clearly gone with the time. The food was so mediocre, I was surprised. I have enjoyed all my food in France until this time. They used very cheap ingredients and that is normally a recipe for a bland dish. I actually did myself a favor and didn’t eat more than a bite or two knowing that if would upset my stomach. My advice, this is a touristy spot, if flavor of food doesn’t matter and you care to just grab a coffee, then that’s what this spot was good for me.

Google
Lovely atmosphere, wonderful waiter and delicious food! We had 2 different types of the omelettes with salad and both made a very wholesome meal alongside the complimentary bread (also very good!). Everyone was friendly; helpful and although busy, service was quick! The street musicians playing whilst we enjoyed our meal topped it off. They make a very good Diablo drink. Very memorable experience

Google
Historic site, with really good (but not the very best) traditional french dishes in wonderful Montmartre. Picturesque, and lively corner location. We loved sitting outside. Somewhat slow service/food, but we enjoyed the time there and were not in a hurry.

Google
I was here in April and had a fond memory of this place so we visited with our family for a dinner. It’s historical place and such a warm and cozy place. We got seated right away since it was 4:30 pm. I wasn’t sure if I give 3 or 4 stars, because I really like this restaurant but there are so many other good restaurants in Paris so I decided with 3 stars for the quality of food.. Mussels had no taste. Even though it had onions and celery, it seems like it was boiled in water without any wine. Fries were good. My daughter had a special plate with steak w peppercorn sauce, salad and fries. It was ok. Escargot was average French onion soup was ok but not great. Price is reasonable and ambience is amazing.

Yelp
if you're in Paris, you NEED to visit Montmartre, a quaint & lovely neighborhood on a hill where you can also get a view of the city! this spot has the prettiest exterior and a comforting vibe inside w/ super friendly service. french onion soup was light (not as thick as what i'm used to) and the linguine was unexpectedly so good (loved the mushrooms). the mussels were small but i actually preferred the size bc they were more tender & flavorful. and of course the creme brulee didn't disappoint!! what we ordered: - linguine w/ basil and mushroom cream - moules frites (mussels with french fries) - french onion soup - side salad - dessert: creme brulee

Yelp
I've been wanting to go here and finally we went on a perfect sunny day in Paris. We opted to sit outside and the server was very kind and pleasant checked on us numerous times would love to come back here again. We just had a snack. We had some crepes with Nutella, french fries and some refreshments. Ambiance inside was casual and their washroom was very clean.

Yelp
Oui oui oui! This was the hang out of Picasso, Toulouse Lautrec n more aristocrats. For those who don't know Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was a French artist, synonymous with the image of an absinthe-soaked, bohemian 19th century Paris. A nightlife-loving aristocrat, he was a VIP at the Moulin Rouge n the novel n. movie was inspired by his life as a bon vivant. There were more ads on Instagram on Maison Rose than Le Consulat so we went to Maison Rose, the nasty server yelled at us so we left n came here, lucky us, this wonderful restaurant had such vibes I felt so welcome n relaxed. We ordered a soupe à l'oignon (onion soup) 12euros, so good escargots looked so cute! They were good too, we had ice cream with an amazing home made Chantilly (whipped cream) the dude sitting next to me had a steak I wanted it so bad but my husband said to save my hunger to eat at la crémaillère which turned out to be no longer good I wrote a review. The service was impeccable, leConsulat is an iconic restaurant in the heart of Montmartre n it's not to be missed.

Yelp
This place used to be frequented by artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, and Monet. The outside is really cute, and it's in a very cute area, but the indoor ambiance was a little bland. The servers were super nice, and the food was good, especially the tortellini.

Yelp
What can one say about Le Consulat that hasn't been said before? We stopped here for midday snacks & wine and had a great time watching some street musicians who were actually talented. A must-stop when in Montmartre.

Sarah S.

Yelp
The staff was extremely rude. We asked to be sat at a table outside, but they refused to seat us. Even though there were over five open tables available and they said they do not take bookings. They sat other groups but only if they spoke French. Another American girl tried to go to the bathroom, she was a patron, her group was sitting outside. But the staff was SO rude to her. They made us all feel very uncomfortable. Completely avoid this place. There are plenty of other nice spots nearby with good food and kind staff.
google avatar

Irene B.

Yelp
The food was just okay. Not bad and not extraordinary. The onion soup was a bit salty. The escargot was a bit dry and not luscious or to die for. The best part of the alfresco table was the music and dancing on the street right in the heart of Montmartre. Le Consulat is always worth a one-time dining experience ( even if the service was slow and the food so-so when we were there) for its part in the history of bohemian Paris in the time of the famous impressionists and other greats of Art and Literature.

Yelp
We stopped there on a break while exploring the neighborhood. Great location and a great place to people watch. Could sit there for hours and just watch all the people walk by in the area. I had an americano coffee which was probably the best one I had in Europe. It was a little expensive but it also had a fabulous taste. Just be aware it can get very crowded as it is a popular tourist spot.

Yelp
A cute little cafe in Montmarte. I like their crepe and hot choco. The owner or maybe the people working here are really nice too.

Yelp
Well the location is #1. I ordered my fav dishes here well becuz i'm in Paris and I absolutely love the Montmartre neighborhood. Ooh la la. escargot was ok - could have had more sauce french onion soup was watery - is it supposed to be like this in France? watery? I have had better french onion soup in America. bread was decent water was delicious. I wanted to have bubbly but they didn't have Prosecco. I know I know I'm in France I'm supposed to order champagne but didn't feel like having French bubbly at the time ‍. Staff was superb and fantastic Minus the 1 star for the sad food.
google avatar

Cindy Z.

Yelp
Food was ok but we were desperately hungry. Service was very slow but they were extremely busy and understaffed. I might go back but only if desperate again.
google avatar

Donna B.

Yelp
Craving mussels. And of course the need to hike up Montmartre. Moules was posted on a sign out front, so we go in. As many Paris restaurants the seating is tight and especially at the lunch rush in a touristy area. The service was good. French / English menu not a problem. The mussels were ok. The wine broth didn't really have enough flavor. The bites were small. The frites were perfectly hot, crispy outside and tender inside. Nice restaurant, but would recommend finding a different selection on the menu.

Yelp
Thinking about my favorite memories of our trip to Paris, and Le Consulate lands a top spot on the list. Le Consulat is historic - and there is something so magical about dining in this tiny restaurant where some of the world's greatest artist found themselves often. I'm talking Van Gough, Monet, Picasso...wow. It's located down the street from the plaza of artists in Montmartre and it is really charming. I recommend sitting outside - even on a cold day, it's just kind of entrancing to watch people walk down the streets. Of course I started with a Vin Chaud. I became obsessed with hot, mulled wine during my trip and if you go when it's chilly to France - you MUST have Vin Chaud all the time. I ordered the mussels - which came with amazing fries. Didn't love the mussels - maybe they got cold too fast because we were outside, I don't know. BUT the other food I stole from my boo was excellent. The French Onion soup was to die for, and so was the plate of sliced ham with bread. This is a place where you stay awhile. Don't expect an in and out lunch. But with the people watching, good company, and a nice glass of wine - you won't ever want to leave!
google avatar

Colton C.

Yelp
Ordered the Onion Soup ... it was actually just chicken broth with onions in it and melted cheese on top. Not very good. The fries were tasty but that's about all the good from this place.

Yelp
TLDR: a nice little restaurant next to the artist square. _____ This place is historic and has been visited by many famous artists when they visited Paris. Notable names include Picasso, Van Gogh, and Monet, and now include Blue Arauz. Add that to your roster Le Consulat! A cold, cloudy day, so of course we sat outside. Amazing people watching. The cars going down the narrow road made for some intense moments as well. But with a glass of wine and basket of bread, this was one of the most perfect meals I've ever had. An incredible afternoon mixing ambiance, good food, excellent service and surreal moments of "Am I really here?" Onion soup - this was excellent and really warmed my soul on this chilly day! Jambon - A plate of ham. With bread. Hell yes. Mussels - didn't love these, but we wanted to order something different. They were good, but wish we had gone with something else. Wine - of course wine. A nice house wine was affordable and delicious. Overall this was an EXCELLENT lunch.

Yelp
Tourist trap! Crowded. Table are so close together, they almost made us share a bread basket. Service was nice. Food not so great. It's located near the church in Montmartre. It's a great place to grab a coffee and people watch in the outdoor seating.

Yelp
Very older cafe has been running from more than 4 hundreds years ago. Claude Monet and Victor Hugo gathered at here and got arguments on their art works with each other

Yelp
Yeah, I came directly to Le Consulat because of seeing it on IG and have absolutely no shame admitting it. Got some good photos, too. We dined inside and it was tiiiight. But everything was so good. We stayed for over two hours because their Rose' was amazing. The service was typical for Paris but not bad, just not great. I got a little tipsy and just marveled at being in Montmartre in Paris. Great memories were made that day!

Hanh L.

Yelp
Stopped by because it was the only thing open by our hotel late night. I was hungry so I ordered a chicken sandwich (don't judge me) honestly best chicken sandwich if my life. My husband got the sirloin and it was cooked to perfection. Prices were good and ambiance was pleasant. The staff were super attentive. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Le Consulat..horrible service, horrible food... but their apricot juice was the bomb and only reason they get stars.we were seated and forgotten about. They finally decided to take our order. Capes, espresso and apricot juice. The drapes tasted like it had been microwaved. It tasted old and blah. It was like microwaved bread with a splat of nutella. The espresso was solid and the apricot juice out of this world delicious. I don't think they care much for service This area has a high tourism and all they want is your money. Get you in and out quick.

Yelp
We stumbled upon here after visiting the infamous Sacre-Cœur and the Musee Montmarte and were rather hungry ( the croissant and viennoise chocolat wore off). Yelp says it's touristy which fine, there are lots of crowds in this area but it's Paris, there are going to be a hundred of people everywhere so we took a chance. We really came for mussels but the sweet waitress said they were out, but we still stayed. We started with vin: a Rose and a Chinon. Then came the french onion soup (soupe l'oignon gratinée) and it was so good. It wasn't heavy and definitely not very salty as many store bought are. I've made french onion from scratch and this definitely tasted homemade. Really good start! We ordered Croque Monsieur and my hubs ordered a turkey dish with basmati rice and a tarragon cream sauce. I die. The Croque was insane and so perfect. I had a side of pomme frites as well :) when in Paris :). My husband said the turkey was great as well. Must visit! It really wasn't crazy expensive either (68€ which is 77$ USD). Definitely worth the stop!!!9

Yelp
Very iconic street view of the Montmartre district. We stopped in front of Le Consulat just to get a photo, but then it started pouring! So we wondered in for food and a drink. The staff was very friendly and quick to seat us. After a week in Paris, the food was okay here compared to other restaurants we tried. French onion soup broth was plain. The fiance was craving a burger of all things. It was a big portion, but nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Yelp
So glad I found this quaint place in montemarte! Amazing french onion soup. It's def different than any french onion soup I had in the states - not too salty, so much better. Great service too. Def recommend!
google avatar

Edna V.

Yelp
This place was definitely on my Paris checklist! I'm so glad I came here. I came at a good time as well, only one couple was inside the restaurant at the time, so it was pretty quiet. We were greeted right away, the server spoke great English and took our drinks order. My daughter had some questions about the menu and he was very helpful. I order the onion soup and the steak, and I was not disappointed. The soup was hot, and it was full of flavor. After I was done with my soup, my steak came out and it was delicious. It came with salad and French fries. The salad was fresh, and the fries were hot and crispy. I was not disappointed by this place and I was glad I got to enjoy it, specially because of it's history and location. Beautiful Montmartre.

Monica R.

Yelp
Excellent service, we were a party of 12 with no reservation and he was able to accommodate us all. The food was great.

Doug J.

Yelp
Inedible. We popped in here because our place of choice was closed. The onion soup is chicken broth with onions. The baguette is bought from a shitty supermarket. I was afraid of getting sick from eating the escargot since everything else was so below par so I didn't.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Not surprisingly, there are quite a lot of cafes in the narrow streets that make up Montmatre, and just to think I might never have actually ended up here if not for some random wanderings of Google maps and noticing that there were a collection of bars (and museums) around here. Anyway, we ended up here as we finished off at the Museum Montmatre, and were looking for a place to rab something to eat. However this place wasn't going to be such a place and instead I simply stopped off here for a coffee. It was okay, and had a rather charming atmosphere as well, and being in the narrow streets added to that.

Yelp
Perfect ambiance and location. Wait staff very polite and fast. Food was yummy! I think that the food often tastes better when you are having a wonderful experience. The outdoor curb seating in the warm sunshine, the (cute and charming) accordion player entertaining us, and it's Montmartre in Paris! I could have stayed there forever. I seriously could have been fed a McDonald's burger and been happy...but the food actually WAS delicious. We shared the mussels and fries and French onion soup, very tasty and generous portions! The rose' made it the most perfect lunch. It was funny, when the mussels were delivered with a fancy cover, the boyfriend removed the cover and our waiter freaked! He was afraid the mussels would spill out over the table. But they didn't, phew, that would have been tragic! Drama Queen, too cute. I would definitely return here! I absolutely loved it! With an entire month of traveling and eating out daily, this experience definitely ranks in the top 3!
google avatar

Gillaine V.

Yelp
Prime spot, mediocre food. French Onion was wayyyy too salty. Thought it was maybe the French way, but the French have been holding back on salt with my food. Nope nope nope. Also $11 euro for a soup. Damn ma. Mussels were ok. Did the job, but nothing special. Fries were like big cut steak fries. Still whatever's. Not worth. Walk around and try another place instead. Montmarte has better food, just keep walking!

Jesse L.

Yelp
Seriously, the cutest and coziest restaurant in Montmarte! Host & staff were very hospitable and welcoming as they cracked a few jokes here and there throughout our meal. Food was great, highly recommend the duck confit, croque madame, and the frites we're so crisp! Overall great experience, merci Le Consulat! Ordered: duck confit, croque madame, croque monsieur (not pictured), beef bolognese (not pictured), onion soup & escargot
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place after visiting Sacre Coure. It is in a cute neighborhood of alleys just up from the church. The service was great and friendly. The mussels we had we're cooked great. The spaghetti bolognese was fantastic with great flavor. The french onion soup was a bit different than I am used to as the broth was more of a light color and a bit more salty than sweet. All in all we loved our stop here
google avatar

Aprille C.

Yelp
Our last day in Paris was up in Montmartre and rainy. We stopped here for onion soup which we both got. My guy also had a Croque Monsieur which is really a ham and cheese sandwich grilled. He liked it. I loved the onion soup. And they were accomodatiing to English speakers. Adorable little restaurant. Super clean and friendly staff(although they each went outside to smoke). What is it with smokers in Paris? Didn't they get the cancer memo?).
google avatar

Jak Leroy D.

Yelp
We love Le Consulat! Montemarte is one of our favorite areas in Paris and Le Consulat is one of our favorite cafes in Montemarte. This adorable little eatery is in a prime location for people watching and the food and service are fantastic! We shared some escargot, french onion soup, and wine and everything was delicious. We ate here three times in one week and each time was just as enjoyable as the last. The prices are great, the service is friendly, and the ambiance can't be beat. Le Consulat is a wonderful dining option in Paris!
google avatar

Yudy Arleth M.

Yelp
It's really good. The duck is fantastic and the attention is amazing. But it is a little expensive
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
A very nice lunch stop in Montmartre. The outdoor tables were shaded, so we sat comfortably indoors.
google avatar

Carla R.

Yelp
Le Consulat is in the Montmartre district and it is nestled up a winding cobblestone street, very picturesque. We came in to a warm inviting restaurant and choose a seat. There were some lovely tables outside, but it was a bit cool and there were smokers. So we chose to sit inside. We hadn't eaten in a while and ordered too much food! We ordered a cheese plate that had creamy Brie, some blue cheese and a cheese similar to Brie, but had a black walnut taste. It was delicious, but would have left that off after tasting the rest of our food. We shared a crock of french onion soup. The soup was warm savory goodness with hunks of bread and melted gooey cheese. So delicious! We shared Croque-Monsieur and it is similar to grilled cheese, but so much better! There were thin slices of ham in between two pieces of bread and then the bubbly cheese on top. To finish we had a chocolate mousse and it was better than Devine. It was light and creamy and rich. If you are a chocolate lover, I highly suggest making room for this dessert. It was comfort food at it's best.
google avatar

Belle L.

Yelp
Enjoyed a relaxing lunch here with a friend during my first visit to Paris this past June! We ordered the mussels & onion soup both were delicious. The location is great, surrounded by many shops and other restaurants and the service was awesome as well. It was the perfect ending to my last day in Paris!
google avatar

Kristopher K.

Yelp
This place is really cute. The service was excellent, the price was decent and the food was very good (including the onion soup, the croque monsieur and the frites). Also, they offer free wifi, which is nice.
google avatar

Marina S.

Yelp
What a lovely place!!! We sat outside and had a glass of wine enjoying the afternoon warmth. Although it's a little busy and now and then there's a huge bus passing by very close to the outdoor sitting area. It was still worth visiting and enjoying Montmartre!
google avatar

Jill H.

Yelp
Loved this delightful little cafe. Soup, sandwiches, coffee, peace. Great service, great prices, and relaxing place to take a break.
google avatar

Carol M.

Yelp
The bartender/waitress was so rude, it was my first time in Paris, I didn't know they dont serve food before 7, we ordered a couple of drinks and she just yanked the menus out of our hands without saying anything and gave us the bill right away, it was in the next bar over where a nice guy told us they dont serve food before 7, we ended up at le sabot rouge where they gave us excellent service.
google avatar

Deepika S.

Yelp
We had the duck breast and steak plate. The portions were huge. Both dishes were delicious. My favorite was the duck. The sauce was really good and the duck didn't have that gamey taste to it. It's a tiny place but luckily there wasn't a long wait maybe 20 minutes. It would have been nicer to sit outside in Montmartre but the weather was too chilly in February so I didn't mind the warm and cozy interior. The service was sweet. Good people.
google avatar

Frank D.

Yelp
Visited Basílica Sacre Coeur and after the long treck there needed to pick up some lunch and a beer. Classic French bistro in Monmarte was just what the doctor ordered.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Really kind service, really good French onion soup!! This spot is near our AIRBNB and is very cute and quaint looking with red woven chairs. The French onion soup was 11 euros and very savory and delicious. We had no problems with the service and the waiter spoke very good English.
google avatar

Darren P.

Yelp
We stopped here based on a review we read in a self guided walking tour site. Food was excellent, particularly the French Onion soup, mussels and escargot. Staff were very friendly and happy to speak both French and English with me and my children. Lovely views and very relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Lovely little place in the heart of Montmartre famed by the clients who frequented here (famous artists and poets, and Woody Allen). It's decor is simple and nice, its service is spectacular, and the food is good. Today we got simple food, French onion soup and a cheeseburger with salad and frites, which all were quite lovely. The soup was traditional and had a fantastic broth, not too much bread or onions. Perfect amount of cheese and great flavor. The burger was cooked nicely (be sure to order "medium" if you actually want "medium rare"). The fries were also very good. We didn't order more but the whole menu looked appealing. I will say that the service was very very good.
google avatar

Phoebe L.

Yelp
Be patient and try to speak French. This area is swarming with tourists, regardless, Le Consulat is l'originale and the food is delicious and the French still go there pour dejeuner. The waiter is working very hard and a little French and a little smile and a little patience will help you understand PAris.

Eloi R.

Yelp
This place was so inviting and cozy. The staff did well with English and the food was amazing! We had the pleasure of having our New Year's Eve dinner. I had the duck breast plate that was 10/10 and my wife had the rump steak 10/10 and we had an onion soup. The price was a little steep but hey that's the going rate out here.
google avatar

Hovi S.

Yelp
We happened to see Le Consulat after a busy day at the Sacré Coeur. The hubby had the Croque Monsier and I had the most delicious Mussels in garlic butter. Hi The service was wonderful and the restaurant was filled with old Parisian charm.
