How You Can Experience 1920s Paris Today

"I went to Le Duc des Lombards on the right bank — probably the most famous (and touristy) jazz club in the city, but it draws incredible acts and delivers some of the best jazz and blues." - Matthew Kepnes

Incredible place for seeing some great jazz music live. Went there on a Monday where entry was free and the musicians were top notch. Plan ahead and queue at least 40 minutes before opening if you’ve already done want a good table. Service is French in nature but efficient enough. The atmosphere is the best thing about the place. It’s nothing like Caveau de la Huchette, which is incredibly touristy. You’ll find a proper jazz crowd at Le Duq, very quiet and respectful people. Seating is pretty close to the state if you get there early enough, and the sound system/mixing is really good. There are even some TV screens for people who are not in good tables to still see the musicians on stage. Drinks are a bit on the pricey side but to be fair that happens in all of Paris. Can’t believe beer there is more expensive than in London and nowhere as good.

Even though we arrived around 10 PM on a Tuesday evening, the place was quite crowded. We sat at a table with a limited view, which wasn't a problem. Cocktails started around 15 euros and weren't particularly tasty, but they were good enough. There was a band performing; the pianist and other musicians were particularly good, but the vocalists were making strange noises and constantly trying to jump into the music, killing many of the solos. It wasn't quite as good as I expected from a jazz club, I suppose because it was a free event on a weekday.

Google
This is a bucket list experience -- a jazz club that is so intimate that you will think you are having sxx! I was virtually sitting on top of the drum kit. The room is the size of a small apartment; you are pretty much part of the band, I saw The Getdown play. As written up by TSFjazz the next day, these guys were truly "les princes de Paris." This is THE PLACE anywhere on the planet for a magical night of music. In the City of Lights, no less. Jim Morrison would enjoy, so will you (after all, you can visit his final resting place by a short ride on the metro). This place crushes it. Run, don't walk there.

Google
Just a wonderful place to experience jazz! Recommend to get there early enough so you can catch a good seat. Price is really a reasonable for the level of musicians that you are listening to. That’s even a nice menu with reasonable drinks and appetizers. Everybody working there is quite kind as well.

Google
Incredible place! Genuinely great jazz, awesome venue and great service. Great atmosphere!! I went on a Monday for a 19:30 set so didn’t queue and got there close to the start time and got in, but it looked like a queue was formed for the second set so would recommend getting there early if you plan on going later.

We had an absolutely incredible time at the jazz club! The acoustics were outstanding, creating the perfect atmosphere for the fantastic musicians to shine. The drinks were superb, and the service was top-notch. It was an unforgettable experience that we would love to repeat. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a memorable night out!

Google
Our AirBNB review suggested we visit Le Duc des Lombards Jazz Club. We enjoyed tasty libations during the show. Lively jazz ensemble with a smooth beat. Was worth the visit to the intimate venue. Will be back on our next trip.

Google
Not my choice of music or venue but I'm glad I went for the experience of a Parisian jazz club. Quite small and we were rather like sardines squashed round a small stage. An experience not to be missed.

Yelp
Bad food and even worse service... GO ELSEWHERE. 1. We were served stale, flavorless bread in France. Need I say more? 2. The server in the gray, plaid pants (photo below) behaved absolutely atrociously towards my husband and I. One of the other servers offered to move us to a table closer to the stage. Once again, it was OFFERED to us. We didn't request it. Grey Pants walked over to us and began screaming/berating us like we were breaking the law because he needed the table for another couple. Needless to say, we didn't fly across the Atlantic and pay for overpriced bad bread to be disrespected by an emotionally unstable loser in cheap pants who clearly isn't aware that he works in the service industry. Despite his behavior, we graciously moved back to our original places. 3. I then proceeded to watch Gray Pants behave rudely towards several other customers. He was snarky towards a group of young men who asked for water. He snatched away a woman's drink before she was done drinking it and she had to call him back. 4. I later needed to squeeze past him to get to another part of the club... I said "excusez" in a normal volume/tone of voice. Gray Pants had the nerve to whip around and tell me to "calm down" and tried complaining about the way I spoke to him for simply excusing myself as I walked by. This was exceptionally ironic considering the spectacle he caused over our table earlier. @Duc des Lombards management: Please fire this feral rat in tacky clothing before he drives away all of your customers. He is the stereotype of the "French rude server" on steroids.

Yelp
I love Paris, I love this pedestrian district and I love Le Duc des Lombards. One of the oldest and best jazz clubs in Paris. The music was simply phenomenal. They play late into the night. I also enjoyed their skillfully made cocktails very much. They serve charcuterie and cheeses, smoked salmon, olives and other small aperitifs and hors-d'œuvres, but we ate before going. Our server was fun and amusing. He made us feel welcome and gave us plenty of good advice. Make sure you book your concert tickets in advance or you won't might be left outside or have to wait a long time before being granted access.

Yelp
Pretty good jazz, however the place overall could use a lot of work. The place is a bit dingy. Also, there was no water in any of the sinks in the bathrooms downstairs and it had obviously been that way for some time. There wasn't even a sign. Also the drinks were absolutely horrendous. I got the aviation-- it wasn't even purple and tasted like cough medicine. Totally disgusting. For a place with a substantial cover (we got in at 30 euros for a local band with no real following) I really expected much more from the experience.

Yelp
Music was amazing, we went for a Creole Jazz night. I suggest showing up 30 mins early if you want your pick of seats. We arrived about 15 minutes before and since we were a larger party sat upstairs to sit together. Loved the spritz I got but the waiter never came back after the first drink for us to order another. The show was 1.5 hours long. My party would have had two more drinks!

Yelp
Great location and easy to find. We walked in and bought tickets to a 7:30pm show only for 35 Euros each. We were able to sit on comfortable stools on the left side facing the piano. Great acoustics and view, which they also have several TV too. Non smoking interior! Drinks came quickly and great selection. Highly recommended!

Yelp
What a great night I had! The music was fantastic and the food and the wine suggested by my waiter was perfect. I was a bit nervous going by myself as I do not speak French. The waiter was very gracious as I said in my terrible French that I do not speak French. He smiled and said no problem and took care of me all night.

Yelp
During our recent trip to Paris, we caught a show here. First off, we were very grateful that they accommodated our request for a reservation at short notice. When we arrived, we found the environment to be a perfect setting for jazz. We were given seats with great sight lines, and the sound was amazing. The group performing was an awesome quintet (sax, piano, guitar, bass, drums), and we wish we could see them again in the States! The service was excellent - friendly, helpful, and efficient. Wine recommendation was spot on as well. We had a wonderful time, and we hope to get back again someday. Merci beacoup!

Yelp
I've never been to a jazz club before, but I had always been open to the idea. This jazz bar was very cool -- not too big of a place, but large enough for plenty of people. The stage is right in the center with people surrounding it. For my first jazz experience, I thought the music was great! With a nice glass of wine (10€ so I thought it was a bit expensive... Bottle next time), it's the perfect chill night in Paris.

Yelp
Hostess was so rude。 Get there early for good seats。 I say, not worth it。

Yelp
Can't speak for the place if www.@ethaniverson.com isn't there but in that case- the sound guy, the staff, the vibe, the music- hells yeah. I went to 3 sets in 2 nights and I exactly never do that.

Yelp
AWESOME...!!! If you want a fun, enjoyable night in Paris make Le Duc des Lombards a must -- especially if you are a musician, or just love live music with a more intimate, chill kind of setting. It was fun, well-organized, visually appealing with cool mood lighting, and the service was top-notch; they were helpful, friendly, and cheerful. LOCATED IN A COOL NEIGHBORHOOD WITH VARIOUS BARS AND RESTAURANTS, COOL TO MINGLE OR PEOPLE WATCH. We saw Hailey Tuck perform there while sipping drinks. The host got my wife and I a great table where we had a perfect view. I would return again and again. Excellent joint for jazz!!!

Yelp
Fantastic Saturday night at Duc's. Great group of local jazz artists rotated through the stage and played everything from standards to Jazz Bass Clarinet. Staff and servers were also very accommodating and friendly. And best of all no cover for a fantastic night of live music!! Do yourself a favor and support a great Jazz bar. Go to Duc's

Yelp
I stumbled across this place while looking for another jazz spot in St. Michel. I caught a jam session which was phenomenal. The artists were highly skilled and the music was quite spirited. The atmosphere is low key and respectful. I highly recommend.

Yelp
On my last visit to Paris I wanted to attend a live jazz show & a friend there recommended this venue. I was not disappointed & had a wonderful experience. With such fond memories of this classy & intimate club, was looking forward to returning on my trip to Paris last week. The hostess was extremely friendly, we had excellent seats, the cocktails (Cosmos) were super tasty, and the music was superb. Classic jazz in a cool & intimate club. My 81 year mom absolutely enjoyed our evening as well.

Yelp
Great time, good music. Was a little tough getting tickets at the door but they accommodated us.

Yelp
Coming from NYC (Harlem) where Jazz is sacred, this place is pretty good in comparison. Musicians are first rated. Good traditional jazz club. The bands/musicians are having great jam sessions!

Yelp
Loved the club. Reminded me of Village Vanguard. High quality acts. Staff was very welcoming even with no French.

Yelp
I visited here in May 2011 on a Friday evening and loved it. Tried to come back two days later but they do close a little earlier than I expected on a Sunday evening so make sure you check the hours before you head over there (I was trying to make it there for a 10pm performance, taking the subway from Alésia but things dragged and they closed by the time I got there). Make sure you walk inward (away from the main road) and turn right or left to find a nice strip of bars and other hangouts. Anyway! I stayed for about 3-4 hours and made some nice conversation with the people next to me. Softly lit with impressive improvisational performers, both as a group and with their own spontaneous impromptu solos. Would definitely visit this place again next time I'm in Paris (hopefully soon!).

Yelp
Best Jazz bar I know in Paris! If you have pro skill and instrument, you can play at the bar as freestyle. Awesome atmosphere but only thing is that hard to go there often is entrance and drinks is bit expensive. Entrance:20€ and drinks are around 10€ minimum.
google avatar

Silvia E.

Yelp
Fantastic jazz bar ! We went on a Friday night, around 11pm, no cover charge for the JAM, fantastic music and average price drinks. Definitely a must if you like real jazz!
google avatar

Jeffrey P.

Yelp
The music was excellent. 5 stars. Do not get the tickets/food combination. The food is not great, plus the menu is restricted to only a few items with this deal. Also, it is very distracting to order food while the band is playing. Better to eat elsewhere before, and then share a bottle of wine during the show. It was difficult to get our server to come back for another drink. Also, be prepared for very tight quarters. The jazz was 1st rate!

Yelp
This review might not be worth much having stumbled across this club 20 years ago, but what a great experience if you where looking for the classic jazz experience. The club had a mural of Duke Ellington on the outside wall and a neon figure of a guy walking the bass. The inside of the club was small, dark, smoke filled, crowded with a quartet jammed onto a small stage. My memory might be a bit clouded but it was a magical experience. I do not even remember who was playing, but it was within the classic jazz genre and the lead player was a jazz flutist. The club might have moved for all i know, but it was awesome.

Yelp
This is a wonderful little venue that hosts (mostly) jazz gigs from local artists up to international jazz stars. It's a really intimate venue with an almost hidden upstairs mezzanine where you can dine on great food (I filled up on wonderful bread) The bar staff were great and gave us some great recommendations on cocktails and we had a good laugh. The only shame is that on busy nights they run two shows so sometimes you can't hang out all night :( Worth a visit even on a short break to paris in my opinion. I will go back!

Yelp
this place is great. we saw a jazz show here on fri night, and the club is super intimate. we sat practically on stage! tickets here are pricy (25 euros each), but they get some good acts. we saw a jazz trio play a tribute to oscar peterson, and it was a real treat.

Yelp
This was my first time at Duc des Lombards but it will not be my last. We went to hear some great jazz the way it's suppose to be heard. A small venue that puts you up close and personal to the artist. I'm glad I went and it will certainly not be my last.

Yelp
My visit coincided with celebrating my birthday in Paris. I was looking forward to visiting this spot since the Jazz scene back home in Miami, FL is non existent. Les Duc is a serious jazz place! Cover wasn't bad. Drinks and appetizer reasonably priced (remember it's a jazz club so things may be more expensive than lets say a bistro). I enjoyed it. I would check the web site for schedule of who is playing .... I got to hear an excellent sax man ... James Brandon Lewis Trio ... A nice treat!

Yelp
Visited on a Thursday night; 30 Euro cover, great band, good service, good bar & decent bar food. My work colleagues and I had a nice couple of hours watching the 8 and part of the 10pm show. Make a reservation to get a good seat.

Yelp
We had a couple of outstanding nights at Le Duc in December 2012; great venue and a good crowd with a laid back vibe. Easy walking distance from Rue Montorgueil so have dinner there and stroll on over for the late session. Really worth a visit and, if you can't get in, step around to Le Baiser Sale which is just as good and close by.

C H.

Yelp
Intimate venue, airplane quality food including plastic forks and knives, outrageously priced drinks even by Paris standards AND my girlfriend got her purse picked for €50...not a great experience.
