Some of the Best Food in Canada Is Hiding in Le Bic

"A compact on-site pantry shop packed with artisanal products from the region, serving as both a retail micro-market and a showcase for local producers. Visitors encounter colorful tinned seafood, pantry staples, prepared items and seasonal sea plants, and the shop is integrated into the chalet experience—guests are shown the herb patch, kitchen garden and henhouse and can buy or sample goods collected from nearby makers." - Nina Caplan

We had a truly excellent dining experience. It's a French restaurant with a lovely, cozy ambiance, making it ideal for get-togethers. We tried their special fish and chicken of the day, and they are both incredibly flavorful. The apple cider was also delightful.

Authentic French food in Auckland. Perfect for weekend brunch spot. We enjoyed savoury galettes, croque monsieur and eggs benedict. Dinner menu looks great too.

Google
This is our second visit and I wish I had more to complain about but that isn’t happening the food was great for most of us so I have to go with the majority. My only concern was the stake was overcooked I wanted rare and got medium rare. Still tasted great. The service is faultless just need to reduce the times they ask you how the food is. They should listen and know it’s great. I do wish I could give a truly negative but I have to admit I can’t. If you visiting Auckland you must visit the food we have had is great and the service if not the best one of the best we have had when visiting. Please do not take the this the wrong way but if you have checked out my reviews it’s very hard for anywhere to be as good and I wish I didn’t have to travel to the other side of the world to find this. Please give a go and let me know

Google
Cool French music playing. DELICIOUS! Quaint atmosphere with wonderful, friendly waitstaff. Jerome helped us translate and pronounce some of the things we might like on the menu. Amazing everything from start to finish. Can’t wait to go back for crème brûlée

Google
The crepes here are amazing. The goats cheese and sundried tomato crepe is such an amazing combination. The dijon mustard sauce in the dijonnaise crepe is delightful. A nice creamy sauce with lovely warmth from the dijon mustard and not too overpowering. Goes perfect with sausage and potato. Service was really quick and incredibly friendly. Perfect for a short lunch visit

Google
Wonderfully authentic French restaurant in Auckland. What an amazing find! Went on a Wednesday night and it was full (luckily we made reservations). The atmosphere and food were very French and the service warm and friendly. I had the set menu of French onion soup, coq au vin and crème brûlée - all very delicious. A perfect place to visit on a cold and wet Auckland evening (or any time really). Highly recommended

Google
Fantastic little place! Had a date night here while staying downtown. The atmosphere was nice, very much a rustic french feel. Authenticity helped by french staff :) The food was delicious - we had a set menu, wife had ravioli as a starter, I had french onion soup. Both fantastic, although ravioli was the winner. Both had pan seared snapper, which was buttery deliciousness, with ratatouille, mash and salad. Can't fault it. And the creme brulee. Mmmmm. Great french wine and apertif, digestif list! Not cheap but worth it. We enjoyed it so much we brought a hoard of kids and cousins for crepes the next evening. Merci bacu!

Google
Wonderful restaurant! I had the salmon and leek galette (La Nordique), and it was absolutely delicious! The host was very friendly and, yes, he spoke French. 🙂 The decor and seating were super cozy, creating the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing breakfast. I hope to come back soon!

Yelp
We were out walking looking for a place for dinner on a Friday night, and were pleased that our path took us here. We ordered 2 different savory crepes, which were delicious and reminded us of the crepes we have enjoyed in France. We enjoyed cider, who is available sweet or dry, served in stemless bowls. For dessert we shared a Martinique crepe, delicious! A lovely meal with excellent service.

Yelp
I went with two other ladies to this charming restaurant. We all throughly enjoyed everything we ordered. I had six snails as an appetizer and a crepe for my meal which was delicious. I also tried a cider and a glass of Pinot Gris. Delicious! The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Explaining everything from our numerous questions. I highly recommend this charming French restaurant when in Auckland.

Yelp
We were in Auckland for a couple days and we wished we ate every meal at this sweet little French eatery. It was dark and rainy outside but warm and cozy in here. The food was such a comfort and the waitstaff so personable. A sweet memory.

Yelp
Nice spot for traditional French crêpes, whether savory or sweet. There's also a nice menu of French café dishes including Coq au Vin and Beef Bourguignon. Extensive dessert menu and a nice wine list. Friendly service. An intimate café environment.

Yelp
Food was great! Classic French cuisine friendly staff. We ordered the liver pate , coq au vin and boef bourguignon All excellent home cooked style.

Yelp
Quaint and charmingly humble French diner offering authentically delectable dishes to satisfy any palate. The server was so friendly, warm, and inviting and the savory crepe I ordered was perfect in every way. Dare I say that I enjoyed their crepe just as much if not more than the one I had in Paris.

Yelp
Very cozy and intimate. Food and wine were awesome. Price was reasonable. Would definitely go back

Yelp
I was looking for a place to have my brunch/lunch, just passed by this restaurant and was caught by its style, something made me want to have a closer look, without knowing what at first. Once I did, I understood what it was: it is a traditional French restaurant with typical decoration, and it was love at first sight, bringing me back to my home country I asked the owner, who's not only French but from Normandy where crepes come from, for his recommendation, he mentioned the Savoyarde crêpe, I went for it, and I must say it was really REALLY yummy, just loved every single bite I warmly recommended this restaurant, best one I've been to in Auckland/New-Zeland

Yelp
I love this place. The atmosphere the staff and the food and wine are to die for. My palette enjoys everything about Le garde-manger.

Yelp
The food is delicious. This is NOT fine dining. Honest French dishes in a very casual setting with great prices. HIGHLY recommend.

Yelp
We dropped in here for dinner after a long day of walking around Auckland. The food was absolutely amazing, great French cooking. Our server was a bit clueless and had some issues along the way. She wasn't knowledgeable about anything on the menu and neglected to mention the specials that we noticed on a chalkboard on the way out. The food was so good that I still felt they deserved five stars. The owner also came to our table multiple times and helped with some of the service. They even offered gluten free crepes which were amazing. I'd definitely go back for the food but expect a to be there awhile and not necessarily be satisfied with the service.

Yelp
What a lovely restaurant. A great way to spend our last evening in Auckland. Food was delicious and so was the wone

Yelp
Anytime I'm in Auckland I make sure to stop at Le Garde-manger. Amazing food, great service. It's a little hole in the wall but you won't regret coming in. All the crepes are so tasty and the potatoes are fantastic. The burgundy beef is so flavorful and tender. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This place closes in the early afternoon-it's not open for dinner right now. It's super cute-lots of crepes on the menu!

Yelp
Jetlagged out of our minds we wanted a quiet breakfast/brunch w good coffee- This cute little place hit the spot. Relaxing, well located, pleasant service & one sweet one savory crepe for us. Steady stream of customers but not unpleasantly crowded Dinner options on the board looked quite good- would b nice to check out

Yelp
Came from the US, this place was close to where we had lunch. We popped in for a dessert crepe and a coffee. Service was prompt and very courteous. We had a crepe Mont Blanc with the poached pear and almonds. It was very delicious! I can't say much more since that's all we had but the rest of their menu looked very enticing!!

Yelp
Was it the weather? Where was everyone today? This petite cafe is usually packed with diners, yet today there were three tables with guests. The service was friendly, avec accent français, and prompt. I loved that I never had to refill my water glass - the simple things that make a huge difference. The location and atmosphere are lovely. There's Edith, Jacques and Serge singing in the background and the decor is certainly reminiscent of the cafe's in Paris. To be honest I was a little deflated by my crepe. The apples in the Crepe Calva were not very sweet and tasted a bit over cooked during the caramelizing process. I was however impressed that my ice cream seemed to remain frozen inside the crepe. How is this possible? Not complaining, just curious as I'd like to try this technique at home. What a shame, I was very much looking forward to an amazing crepe. Alas, I must admit it was a B- overall.

Yelp
Great authentic French food!! Nice ambiance! Dinner was conveniently located near our hotel at VR Queen Street!

Yelp
What a find! A friend of mine has been coming here a while - whenever her parents are in town, she always takes them here for dinner and now I definitely know why. Totally unassuming spot on Queen St, opposite Myers Park and the University of Otago building, it is sandwiched between little Asian restaurants, random Internet cafes and dairies. But it's well worth the visit. Parking is not always fantastic - we parked in one of those little public car parks on a side street, but there is road side parking available if you can find it. So lets get to the food! I love onion soup - so naturally I ordered that. I also helped myself to Adrian's escargot which were beautiful, buttery as garlicky - not at all rubbery. Next up, duck breast served with salad, potato gratin and an amazing orange sauce. Faultless. The duck was so perfect - juicy, pink, not at all dry... Such a treat to eat! Dessert was a very cliche, but superb all the same, crepe Suzette. Topped off with a carafe of Beaujolais, I was in heaven. The service was impeccable, couldn't ask for more. I am just incredibly jealous that Adrian works so close by, as he's already decided he'll be back for lunch. I, sadly, work at the other end of town...

Yelp
Took my parents here for lunch last weekend and they're still talking about it! My dad has a particular interest in French culture and he absolutely loved trying out his selection of French vocab on the waiter. The atmosphere of this place is lovely, it's a real hidden gem that looks unimpressive from the outside but completely magical inside. We all got crepes and enjoyed them a lot! There is a variety of vegetarian options - not a lot for vegans with regard to the crepes but maybe elsewhere on the menu? The thing that really impressed us was the drinks selection! Le Garde-Manger not only has cider to match every crepe but has a bunch of interesting liqueurs and cocktail type drinks PLUS alcoholic crepes and coffees! All a little bit pricey as they come out in pretty small glasses but still delicious and a lot of fun to try something different.

Yelp
Le Garde Manger is a sweet little French café, complete with red and white check tablecloths and classic, affordable French cuisine and wines. It has a cheery casual vibe and if you ask me, this is just the kind of place Auckland needs more of. This particular price point is grossly under-represented except in Asian eateries where we are now spoilt for choice. It's great to have a European option and when I'm here I particularly enjoy indulging in the galettes which are also still something of a novelty in New Zealand. In France and even London you can buy these gooey little filled savoury pancakes on the streetcorners and they are SO yummy. Start with the French Onion soup, throw in a salad on the side and you have a perfect meal. A couple of glasses of one of the excellent vin rouges and the world is a better place. Beware though, the sweet crepes are also hard to refuse so pace yourself!

Yelp
Om nom nom nom! I remember walking and driving past this French restaurant and thinking to myself wow it looks prettu damn interesting. The red and white checked tables just screamed out hello, I am a french restaurant but not in a tacky way. As it happened, my boyfriend's friend was moving out of town and she had her farewell at the restaurant. When we walked in it smelt so delicious, I couldn't wait to order. I had the snail. Yes I swore I would never eat snail, but at that moment it felt so right! It was absolutely delicious and no it did not taste like chicken! It was crunchy but soft and tender, extremely flavorsome and delicious. For dessert I had a crepe which was covered in nuts, absolutely delightful! The price of it all, shockingly cheap

Yelp
Un petit coin de France en Nouvelle Zélande... Le Garde-Manger is tucked away between Asian restaurants on upper Queen street.... It is easy to miss if you are not looking for it! But you cannot miss the typically French table cloth and the board menu if you walk past... The staff is French, and they answer the phone in French as well so do not be surprised if you call to make a reservation... Unfortunately, so far I have only eaten there once so I can only comment on their "galette" which is a traditional buckwheat savoury pancake. The fillings and names sound exactly like what you would get at a creperie in France. The portion is generous and the galette was delicious... I didnt even have space for dessert! That's the perfect excuse to go again... I cannot wait to eat some duck or steak frites and next time I will save some space for a sweet crepe!

Yelp
Somewhere - on the outer edge of the solar system - our Nutella crepe was prepared. It is the only explanation for how it took so long to get to our table. It's the only explanation for how the crepe was near-devoid of Nutella - but for a dollop on the top, placed there seemingly to taunt us. To be sure the food here we had - a crepe with egg and cheese, and another with mushroom, creme and chicken - was delicious. The French onion soup hit the spot. It's just, we wish it would have all hit the spot a bit quicker. We're still looking for whatever happened to our Nutella.

Yelp
Frenchie and I needed some good ol' cuisine after a day on Rangitoto. We swung by here for crepes, coffee, and conversation. It's a quaint little place, but next time we wanted crepes, we made them ourselves.

Yelp
A fantastic little restaurant. Without putting too much pressure on the place, the Lamb Shanks special I had this evening was arguably one of the best meals I've ever been served in a restaurant. The restaurant itself has a great little atmosphere and service is great. Highly recommended, definitely a restaurant more for a romantic dinner night than anything.

Yelp
This is one of those places that I always walk past and want to go inside. I think it must be something to do with it looking like it's been teleported in to Auckland from the French countryside with its little red and white tablecloths, wooden chairs and a dresser full of crockery. It's only a small place but the menu surely has enough to suit anyone's needs with a vast selection of vegetarian food, sweet and savoury crepes and a whole lot of authentically French mains. I only came in here for a dessert (curse places with their menus posted outside to draw you in with their delicious descriptions) one evening and wished immediately I had come for dinner too. I had a crepe martiniquaise, a thin pancake stuffed with banana, coconut and vanilla ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce. Wow. Such amazing flavours altogether and good value too at only $10.50. I will definitely be returning soon. Would you judge me if I had a savoury crepe for dinner and a sweet one for dessert...?

Yelp
Great classic French Cafe. Nice decor and attentive staff. Food was fabulous with excellent affordable wine list. Crepe featured desserts were memorable.

Yelp
Hidden in Upper Queen Street (across from Myers Park) is a beautiful and ambient French restaurant called Le Garde-Manger. The website was mouth-watering, so I booked ahead for a special dessert evening and the manager, Florent, was such a pleasure to deal with. My group enjoyed lovely desserts and paid a simple $5 for a flavoured crepe, or a little more for a literally flaming flambé! The red and white table cloths joined with the genuinely French staff really made you feel like you were in France. A special treat for a lovely night out on the town!

Yelp
Quaint little French bistro & creperie, almost at the top of Queen Street. Classic French decor complete with checkered fabric covered lights. Only my first visit, funny how you miss things. You can have an assortment of savoury and sweet crepes plus a small, but authentically French, blackboard menu.

Yelp
This was the first restaurant we went to during our NZ trip and they served of one of our favorite dishes of the vacation. They took a flank steak and turned it into a fillet mignon somehow. One of the most tender and delicious slices of beef I have ever had. Good service, tasty wine and a great value - recommended!

Spence H.

Yelp
Amazing meal. The escargot and beef bourguignon were delicious. The lemon sorbet with vodka was a perfectly refreshing dessert after the heavier flavors of the main course. Will definitely come again.
google avatar

Lauriane T.

Yelp
We are French and went there two times during our stay in Auckland. The first time, we had 'crêpes' and they were really good. My boyfriend even said that it was one of the best 'galette' (salty 'crêpe') he ever had. The 'crême brûlée' was nice too. The second time we had 'tartiflette'. It was really good. Just a quick remark: the onions were cut too big, but it was good anyway. Thanks, and maybe we will come back again before we leave Auckland!
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
Have had the crepes, steak and wine... All were awesome, for the quality of the food, the prices are very reasonable.
google avatar

Arvy G.

Yelp
I don't remember what it was called. It was the potato, mushroom, and onion crepe. But it was the shit.
google avatar

Zhentiao L.

Yelp
My GF and I went there for dinner, half of the restaurant was empty, the waitress left us siting for 10 minutes, no order taken and she still chatting with other customer, we stand up and leave she dose not even care about our move, we live in the apartment above never go there again
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
Amazing savory buckwheat crepes with honey and goat cheese. Traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast was superb. And! Best flat white in town! #TravelTrollops

Yelp
We enjoyed a fabulous dinner last night there and having been to France a few times, it matches the better restaurants there. My husband had the French onion soup that was the best we had. He had beef bourguignon which he felt was the best outside of Paris. I had the three fromages galette with chicken which was huge and delicious. We shared a sizable apple tart tartine that was superb. The setting was very Parisienne and the service excellent. In an area that has many Asian restaurants, this was a special treat! Highly recommended by two foodies.
google avatar

Yelp
Going on a hot date? This is the place! Romantic, intimate, dim lighting, reasonable prices, waiters with accents.. It's got it all - we are regulars!

Larry O.

Yelp
We happened upon a small but cozy french restaurant in Auckland. The pumpkin soup was outstanding and could be a meal by itself. The entrees exquisitely prepared and service was attentive despite several larger groups arriving shortly after us. This was one of our best meals while in NZ and we highly recommend a visit to this wonderful restaurant to anyone who appreciated french cuisine!
google avatar

Rick A.

Yelp
Brilliant! A real find. Ambience is casual and wait staff are superb. Food was first rate and I loved my first exposure to escargot which was delicious. Great whether you are with a group or dining solo. I have been there for breakfast and dinner and neither disappointed. A must try if you want a nice meal at a very reasonable price .
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
Went for lunch on a Saturday. Quite pleased. I had La Capri galette, with chèvre, honey, sun dried tomato, and walnuts with some salad greens, and a long black. All quite good. Service was good and not obtrusive. The place is quite informal but comfortable. For two of us, the tab came to NZD40, not cheap but worth the price. We'll be back.
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
A perfect spot for a casual Mothers Day lunch. No reservation required. Friendly attentive staff & delicious savoury crepes. The neighbourhood is perfect for people watching, so I'll get a table in the window & linger over a coffee or cider next time.
google avatar

Sally B.

Yelp
The food is exceptional here. The menu gives you lots of options as well as reasonable prices for the quality you are getting. You think you were in France not in Auckland. It is well worth the walk from the tourist areas to the restaurant. Don't miss out on a wonderful dining experience.

Sharon S.

Yelp
Delicious and a nice addition to the many Asian restaurants in the city. Good selections of both savoury and sweet crepes as well as the traditional French dishes such as coq au vin.
