I spent 1 night at the Le Germain Hotel Calgary, an excellent 4-star hotel, one of the best hotels in Calgary, in my opinion. There are currently no 5-star hotels in the city.
1. Location: The hotel is located right at the heart of the city, next to all the major attractions. If you’re in town for business, the hotel’s location is ideal. The iconic Calgary Tower is across the street. Stephen Avenue is less than a 5-minute walk from the hotel entrance. So are the Convention Centre, the Glenbow Museum, and the Theatre complex. Stampede Park, The Saddledome Arena, and BMO Centre are less than a 5-minute drive away or during a nice day, a 15-minute walk away.
Nearby Bankers Hall and the Core Shopping Centre have all that you need in terms of essentials, groceries, banking, and retail.
I arrived by my own vehicle and decided to use the hotel’s valet service (50 CAD for 24 hours) during my stay.
I stayed during a weekday, and the hotel lobby was very quiet with few other guests around.
2. Public Spaces: The hotel décor is that of a modern business hotel. The hotel lobby is not very large or especially memorable.
The hotel does not have a pool, but it does have a spa. I did not have the time to try it out.
3. Hotel staff: The various reception desk staff were welcoming, kind, and professional, as was the valet staff person.
4. Food: I decided not to eat at the hotel. The hotel restaurant, ‘Charcut’, is considered a high-end restaurant focusing on meat dishes. The hotel breakfast is served here as well.
5. Room: My Signature room with a king-sized bed was very large and spacious.
The room décor, as with the hotel in general, was very modern. The room looked well-maintained.
The room has a storage area for luggage, multiple drawers to store personal items, and a safe.
The room also has a sofa and a large desk with a comfortable chair.
The bed was very comfortable. Controls of all the room’s lighting are next to the bed.
The electrical outlets are all North American (Type B), so bring travel adapters if you are arriving from other parts of the world with a different type.
The room has a Nespresso machine and a water kettle. The fridge has a fully stocked minibar, with little space to store additional items.
The room did not have complimentary bottled water, which was unfortunate. Calgary does have excellent drinking tap water. However, the local water is hard, and when running the water tap, it is noticeable, which may deter guests from drinking it or thinking that the water is dirty.
The room’s bathroom area is very large, with a separate area for the toilet. The single bathroom sink was very large as well and felt more like an artsy decoration than practical.
The bathroom shower stall was quite large and came equipped with a huge rain shower head and a separate wand. The water flow was good, not great. I did like the bathroom toiletries available, by Ruby Brown.
The TV channel selection was varied and included mostly mainstream Canadian and American TV channels. The channels included news, sports, and lifestyle, but there were no movie channels.
The free Wi-Fi was protected for hotel guests and was good enough for online streaming of Netflix.
The room view overlooks the Calgary Tower and busy 9 Avenue below. I could hear the morning rush hour below (my room was on the 7th floor), but it was not to the point of being annoying. Luckily, most locals avoid honking their vehicle horns unless they absolutely must, as it is considered very rude.
In summary, I’ve had a very pleasant 1-night stay at the hotel. I could have easily spent several days at the hotel and enjoyed my time here.
If a modern hotel with a business-oriented vibe, excellently located and offering a very good guest service is what you are looking for, then this is the hotel to stay in while visiting Calgary.
