An expected treasure in Ghent!
Although reviews of the museum were very good, we were unprepared for how expansive and interesting the collections were! The museum houses such a wide variety of artifacts, both recent and ancient, from the paleolithic to the Roman and Medieval and up to its more recent history as an arms manufacturer. As you wind up and down the staircases and through the ever continuing network of rooms, you lose track of time! We spent almost 5 hours in the museum and still felt like we missed some things! The collection is definitely more provincial, but this gives you a much better overview of life in the area throughout time. The neighboring University of Ghent and its long list of esteemed academics contributed greatly to the quest for knowledge and Le Grand Curtius records their contributions for visitors to see and appreciate. Even the arms collection which elaborates on Ghent's history in arms production and innovations in improving the effectiveness of such weapons was fascinating!
Overall, I'm so glad we stopped by and tried our best to take in the entire collection of this wonderful museum!
