On a Family Journey to Morocco's Southern Coast, a Writer Reckons with His Homeland's Religious History

"Le Jardin des Douars is a Casbah-inspired spa hotel located in Essaouira, in the argan and olive groves overlooking the Oued Ksob. It offers more refined accommodation than backpacker options."

Le Jardin des Douars, Near Essaouira, Morocco - Explore & Book

"Driving inland from the wind-battered coast, past laden donkeys and fields of argan trees, Le Jardin des Douars appears like a sandcastle on the horizon. Pass through the gates, and colour explodes from the botanical gardens; birds tweet, bees buzz, and calm slips over you like a Moroccan cape. From the main ksar atop the valley, lush gardens cascade down to the oued (river) below. We spent happy afternoons spotting terrapins in ponds, lazing in hammocks and counting butterflies. Two heated jade-green pools are the focal point – a quiet infinity pool for adults, another for families to go wild. And as the sun drops, the enchanting candlelit terrace bar serves up cocktails serenaded by a frog-and-cricket chorus, followed by alfresco dining under starry skies in the warmer months.Inside the imposing façade, plant-filled courtyards and tranquil water features give a refreshing, inside-out feel. Rooms, Suites and Villas are classically Moroccan in style, with traditional tiled floors, antique furniture and time-worn doors. It’s only 15 years old, but already feels rooted here. The beaches and medina of Essaouira are 15 minutes away, but the happy vibe, slick service and genuine warmth make it hard to tear yourself away. Highs Sensational botanical gardens bursting at the seams with colour against the bright blue sky; absolutely stunning on our last revisitAll pools are heated to 28C, so you can swim year roundA wonderful balance between a family haven and a couples' retreat; adult-only areas include a pool, dining room and candlelit hammam spa Feels decadent but with a well-pitched price tag – especially if renting one of the fabulous staffed villasThe inland river-valley location ensures you avoid the worst of the infamous local winds Lows No outside life within walking distance, so you're confined to eating on site or shuttling into Essaouira (no bad thing with fantastic restaurants)You'll probably want a car unless staying put; taxis add up (although a shuttle bus option is available) If here in the school holidays, you may not find the tranquility and romance you're after as many families are in residence" - Ben Reed

"If you’re making the effort to travel to the Maghreb, you may as well get out of town and head for the hills, checking into one of the grand old palaces now functioning as hotels. Something like Le Jardin des Douars. Located outside the coastal city of Essaouira, it’s a ksar — a castle, North African–style, consisting of a cluster of traditional earthen buildings surrounded by a high wall — repurposed as a boutique hotel." - Tablet Hotels

My wife and I stayed here in June as a very welcome break from the hustle and bustle of our stay in the Medina. We were looking for a peaceful place to unwind and we found it. I cannot speak highly enough of this place. Our room was fantastic, including the colored glass stars in the ceiling which were beautiful when the sun was up. The pool was fantastic, the best chill out place. We were delighted to speak to Sebastian, one of the co-owners who was charming and friendly. The food was great. We will be back. Lastly great value for money.

Amazing property- the gardens, pools, and facilities all top-notch and pool side service was top-notch. The service however, yikes, very poor. I LOVED the property but would not return due to the very poor service. The pool side service was great, but the reception and breakfast staff were incredibly off-putting- it was super strange as we have never experienced anything like that. For example, when departing, a man ran out to our car, and asked us if we had paid for our all of our wine? I had literally just paid him at the reception- It was so odd. Also, selling day passes which takes away from the oasis feel of the property. We stayed at a riad in won for a small fraction of the price and had the most incredible service, experience, and accomodations.. I would encourage people to experience the Moroccan hospitality at a riad.

Simply stunning and with the best service! We spent a week at Jardin des Douars and wished we could stay longer. The hotel is beautifully decorated, the staff is really professional and super nice and warm. The food is also really good, traditional with a twist. Thank you for making our stay beautiful and memorable.

I had the chance to come back to Jardin des Douars for a week in May. Such a great experience again. I love this place. The local architecture, beautiful, lush gardens, the 2 pools (with the quiet no-kids pool making sure you can rest and read peacefully), the great choice of food at lunch and dinner (a paradise for fresh fish lovers), the friendly staff, the cool relaxing atmosphere for 'apero time' with live music before the dinner… always so hard to leave. Can't wait to be back!

the place is really beautiful and full of charm. unfortunately the staff is not following .. we got a very rough " maitre d hotel" who was yelling at his staff . he served us for our meal and throw us our plates on the table. food was very good but oysters were not cold (!!!) and they put the bottles on the table and not on a side table. for this king of hotel , you expect more refined details ... the place is enchanting but again the staff is not adapted to the refined architecture.. sad as it was a good experience tho

We had an amazing week in Villa Jasmin- having the privacy of a villa whilst able to use what the hotel had to offer is such a great combination. Essaouria is a short 15 minute shuttle ride away, as is a quad biking trip on the dunes which was fantastic. Villa Jasmin is lovely- 3 large comfortable bedrooms, great pool and outside area, and designed nicely. Feels very ‘Moroccan!’. It’s literally a 3-4 minute walk from the main hotel area. The only real let down was that the food cooked by the housekeeper in the villa was basic. Breakfasts were good, but dinners were really quite plain- they were just one main dish, served with basic cous cous or plain pasta. It wasn’t all homemade either. However this is why it was great to use the hotel restaurant, which we did some of the time. Despite one bad service experience surrounding a nut allergy in our party, we enjoyed our meals both at lunch and dinner. We also made use of the spa for a hammam and a massage- would thoroughly recommend!

First time visiting Morocco - the setting of the hotel is lovely and the design very well thought through. We travel a lot and what I look for in a quality hotel is the feeling the staff are looking out for us as guests in a foreign country. We just did not get that feeling here. Arrived at noon, asked to check in - rather than being clear that the room would not be ready until check in time 3PM they asked us to wait around. We were tired and hungry so went to the city for a bite. We hired a car through the company the hotel use - we were not told we could drop off the car at the airport. Ended up shelling out 250dirham for the shared transfer back to the airport unnecessarily. We played Padel - as residents of the hotel you can hire a court for 400 dirham with racket and ball use included. The courts were lovely! The gardens are beautiful but I think communication could definitely be improved.

I think this is the only time I've ever travelled to a destination - Essaouira - largely because I wanted to stay in a specific hotel! Anyway, I'm delighted to say it did not disappoint! Our room was AMAZING, near to the adult pool and so quiet, comfortable and beautiful. We had daily private Padel lessons, the food and cocktails are superb (I highly recommend the Hendrick's with cucumber and rose) and the service excellent. Good spa too. An easy 2hr 20/30 mins drive from Marrakech which it can be combined with for a really fun week in Morocco. Worth noting that you don't have to sign for anything the whole time you are there, which did slightly freak us out at first, but you get the most efficient itemised bill on check out and so actually the system works really well. I could not recommend enough - pretty much faultless. We will be back!
