Pair Tuscan Wine and Fresh Seafood in Bolgheri, Italy

"A family-founded, internationally recognized Bolgheri estate run by proprietor Cinzia Merli and her sons, producing world-class reds (and one notable white) from 86 organically farmed acres. The winery rose to prominence after strong showings against top Bordeaux and Super-Tuscan labels and even earned a perfect score for a standout vintage, cementing its reputation for powerful, elegant Cabernet Franc–led wines. Though Merli is modest about her cooking, she is known to prepare excellent homemade dishes at the estate—memorable gnocchi tossed with asparagus and pancetta, risotto with zucchini and shrimp, and herb-crusted roast pork loin—and the property offers private tours and tastings that include visits to the vineyards and a sampling of the estate’s wines." - Ray Isle

How to Spend Three Wine-Fueled Days in Tuscany

"I was in town to visit Le Macchiole and spent time with founder Cinzia Merli and her family; founded in 1983 with Eugenio Campolmi and now run alongside her sons Elia Campolmi and Massimo Merli with Production Manager Luca Rettondini overseeing winemaking, the estate has grown from an initial four hectares along the Via Bolgherese to 26.6 hectares spread across six organically farmed vineyards. They anchor their wines on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot rather than the more Tuscan-traditional Sangiovese, and take a distinctive single-variety approach for their flagships: the 100% Cabernet Franc Paleo Rosso shows aromatic complexity with chocolate and espresso, notes of well-aged cigar tobacco, chamomile, brambly berries, singed spearmint, peppercorns, and minera; the 100% Syrah Scrio is majestic, with a subtle sizzle of peppercorns, fresh-picked cherries and a remarkably savory palate anchored by meat, plums, blackberries, blueberries, cured black olives, cocoa powder, and Earl Grey tea; and the 100% Merlot Messorio carries a distinctly balsamic character with sandalwood, cedar, orange oils over coffee, plus kirsch, blackberry liqueur, and porcini powder on a lively frame—overall the 2018s are showing brilliantly and their wines combine elegance, grace, and real longevity. Before I left, Cinzia also gave me a bag of coffee aged in Bolgheri wine barrels, a fitting reminder of a place whose wines keep improving even while remaining consistently high in quality." - Brian Freedman

Google
private tour but felt that it was not very personal or enthusiastic. the tour coverage was also quite limited and we did not really see that much of stuff. it was just the guide talking in general. felt that more can be provided or can charge a lower price or just guide us straight to tasting if the main areas are under construction. wines were amazing just that i prefer other tours for the price im paying. sorry.

The staff was very friendly, and the tour seemed to be quite nice and personal. The winery is much smaller than its neighbours, and there are no any kinds of architectural or artistic wonders, but it's still a beautiful place. It was also interesting to discuss their biodynamic approaches. The wine tasting was amazing due to the added feature of Messorio vertical. It definitely worth it as the wines are indeed incredible!

Google
Very interesting winery, definetely worth visiting. The winery itself is a piece of art both in production process and exterior/interior design by one of well-known Italian street-artist. Wine tasting (4 wines) literally shows the whole history of the winery and passion for winemaking in 4 glasses. For us it was a unique experience - much more interesting if compared to visiting some other 'grand' Italian wineries

Gate was open, Google said it was open. We parked and looked for someone to speak with and got yelled at in Italian and told to leave….
