I stayed 6 nights at the Le Méridien Seoul, Myeongdong on a trip to Seoul and would summarize it as a hotel that has potential to live up to its 5-star hotel rating that Google gives it, but has a ways to go before it reaches that point. There are certain things about the experience as well as the room itself that are rough around the edges. I will also preface this review by saying that I have Marriott Platinum Elite status so experiences may differ.
I booked a Deluxe Guest Room, 1 King, City View and was upgraded to a larger corner room on a high floor with club lounge access. I checked in around 4:30-5:00PM and was told the room wasn't ready despite it being late in the afternoon, so I settled for a room a few floors below since I was tired from the travel day. The staff at the check in counter were great and showed me the room before committing to it.
The room itself looks nice on the surface but leaves a bit to be desired when you look closer. Some of the things I noticed were:
-Black tape on the walls to hide cabling in the washroom
-Trim pieces falling off the washroom doors
-A random hole in the wall
-Exposed cabling in the closets
In the grand scheme of things, those are minor qualms. The biggest issue that I had was with the thermostat. No matter what you set the temperature to, after some time, it seems to reset to a very high pre-set temperature so the room would get very warm overnight. This seems to not be an isolated issue either as a friend that was staying in the Moxy Seoul, Myeongdong (which is the same building) had the same problem. There is no key card to insert when you enter the room either so it's a mystery as to what is causing the thermostat to keep resetting.
I didn't eat at the club lounge other than for a snack here or there, but they had an excellent spread for dinner which beats out any club lounge in North America that I have been to. The drink selection in the lounge was also great and convenient for bottled water, pop, or a beer. Platinum Elite members and higher receive complimentary breakfast at the restaurant next to the check in desk (not at the club lounge). Their breakfast had many options whether you want Western or Asian style. The highlights were the sushi bar and noodle bar. I looked forward to breakfast every day that I stayed at this property!
The location is great for tourists as it's in the heart of Myeongdong, allowing easy access to many restaurants, the night market, as well as public transit. As well, the housekeeping staff did an excellent job with the daily cleaning and turndown service.
For context, during this trip, I stayed at true 5 star hotels such as the Conrad Osaka and HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO and I think that the Le Méridien Seoul, Myeongdong is a 4 star hotel at best based on my experience. Overall, I think this property does many things correctly and is in a central location, but with a few improvements and more attention to detail, it can really really elevate the experience for its guests.
