We stayed at the Hotel Petit Nice Passedat, but the reservations book up months in advance there. I didn't realize it was such a big deal, but they only reserve tables between 7:30 and 9 pm, and they're closed on Sunday. We could have eaten lunch, but we planned on the beach instead. So, the concierge recommended Le Mole.
This being my first time in Marseille, it was nice to visit the Mucem and eat on its roof with panoramic views of the city. The staff and service was wonderful, as well.
They brought us some gazpacho and an artful crudités plate to start. I had octopus carpaccio, and it was perfectly thin and melted in your mouth drizzled with the best olive oil. This is big enough to share. My husband had vegetables with olives and sardines, similar to the amuse bouche, but you can never eat enough vegetables.
For our main course, I had the city's famous bouillabaisse. The broth was hearty and brown. Instead of baguette, it was served with crostini, tomato paste and grated cheese, a nod to the Italian influence on their cuisine. There was a pot of mussels and a plate with golden medallions of potatoes and three kinds of fish -- sea bass, dorade and mullet. My husband had sea bass with a creamy green risotto.
For dessert we shared a tart tatin. Honestly, I loved everything about the meal, and I came with low expectations since I really wanted to eat at Petit Nice Passedat. This is a good choice for tourists, but I saw plenty of locals, especially art lovers there.
