On the Grid : Cafe Con Leche

"If you've been watching Narcos on Netflix lately, then you might be interested in an authentic taste of Colombia. Welcome to Cafe con Leche. Consisting of a few tables and a couple of seats inside and out, jovial owner Joaquin and some friendly staffers give the place some heart, and make the authentic South Amercian dishes that much more enjoyable. The arepas are the real deal – ask for the choclo arepas if they have any left. If you want the best stuff, its not on the menu - more of an under the counter deal bizarrely. Be sure to order the authentic Colombian dish, ajiaco (a thick chicken and potato soup that comes with capers and avocado). Ciao." - For the People

Google
Such a great brunch spot close to central train station. We came back 3 times during our week stay to Sydney because of how good the food is; highly recommend the French toast (best I’ve ever had), hot cakes and granola. Staff were friendly and service was awesome. Could not recommend this place enough.

Google
Come here if you love perfectly poached eggs and authentic matcha. A small and surprisingly quiet cafe despite the quality of food. I got the "hello benny" with smoked salmon and matcha with coconut milk - safe to say this is one of the best ones I've had in Sydney. Table service was fast and efficient.

Google
Great service, delicious food, nice coffee and plenty of room. Best French toast I think I've ever had. Highly recommend!

Google
Lovely barista’s and staff. Delicious coffee & juice. The smell in there is divine, the food smells incredible. Coffee choices for beans are lovely with plenty of choice. I like the vibe.

Google
The food was incredibly good. A bit rich on the cheese but ymmv. The potato rosti was simply delicious. It is a must have. Their coffee and protein shakes are pretty nice too! Overall I would highly recommend this place.

Google
It is a very casual place very next to the Central Station. And the staff is helpful and friendly, the food came to us fast, and they taste good! The presentation of the food was easy and simple not to over, but they did the job - to feed the stomach and make people feel satisfied!

Google
it was a very warm humid day, but it was even warmer inside, so i sadly couldn't appreciate the interior. sitting outside was nice though and it was surprisingly peaceful and quiet for lunchtime in this area. quite a lot of other visitors, but people working here were very organized and treated me kindly. i ordered granola yogurt for dine-in, and serving size was just right for the price. the fruits vere definitely the best part, fresh and delicious. yogurt was mixed in with berry, almost like smoothie, i really liked the flavor, but it was just a bit warm and soupy in consistency. granola itself was just ok. quite a nice brunch spot :)

Google
Good food but $4 extra for gluten free bread when it’s just mass produced store bought white bread is extortionate. Especially when they give you the crust and other Sydney locations charge the same for artisan dedicated gluten free bakeries like Nonie’s.

Yelp
Le Monde Cafe was one of my favorite spots during our stay in Surry Hills. Their items are very fresh and filling. My husband and I enjoyed their Mediterranean toast with halloumi and the truffled poached toast. It was always a great way to start our day and a must visit if you're looking for a healthy, filling breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for brunch and nearly everyone in our group was part of the clean plate club. Lots of eggs benny to go around, and why wouldn't you order that with all the extras you get like avocado! Service was great and quick and they have cute tea pots! Lots of air--great for the morning sun now that it's getting cold!

Yelp
This is my morning sanctuary. I was here most of my days in Surry Hills. I love that it's not always too busy when I do drop by for my morning coffee. Staff are super friendly and Coffee is strong and delicious. Wooden floors, historic building right on the corner. Also I love the fact that I got a bottle of water before I even got a chance to sit down. What more could you want?

Me M.

Yelp
Food is definitely 5 star. I absolutely loooooooooved my potato rosti. My buddy got the truffled egg that was beautiful. Service is slow and OK but they lose one start for their toilet. It's located in the far end of the parking structure next door!

Yelp
Foodman is in Sydney for a few days and after the long flight we are up early each morning so there is a premium on a great breakfast spot. Read the paper, had. Long black coffee and eggs benedict. Great service by friendly staff. Read the paper and planned our moves for the day. Great local spot.

Yelp
Visited Le Monde again this week for lunch and it was as good as previous visit. Quick, efficient and friendly service too...and of course a lovely macchiato. Enjoyed a recent lunch break here with friends from work. The potato rosti with poached egg and grilled bacon, a house favorite, hit just the right spot - tasty, comforting and elegantly sufficient. My friends both raved about the generously portioned roast vegetables and brown rice salad. Service was efficient and friendly. Lunch was topped off with an excellent and properly made macchiato (not the almost ubiquitous mini-latte which seems to be an increasingly common interpretation of a macchiato around Sydney these days). Will definitely go back.

Yelp
I have had the pleasure of working in Surry Hills for the past 8 months and every morning I love waking up wondering which coffee shop am I'm going to try today. I've tried about 20 different places and there are 4 that have made me a repeat customer. Le Monde would be top of this list. For realz. Coffee is really really good, and consistently so. In addition to serving up a wonderful cup of java, I like Le Monde 'cos: - It has a slightly tatty and unassuming exterior (substance over form, yo) - Staff always make me feel like a valued customer in their cafe. - Magazine and newspaper selection is plentiful - Coffee orders get out FAST - Big tables to spread out your paper or accommodate a work meeting - Brunch is a cut above what you'd expect, and pretty affordable.

Yelp
I'd heard great things about this place for brunch, but had held off visiting after a disastrous first visit for takeaway coffees (chai for me) which took forever only for me to take one sip of my chai, spit it right back out and proceed to toss out my whole cup en route to Central Station. Places that are great at coffee are not good at chai. You can't have it all... Nearly a year later...I'm glad we gave Le Monde a second chance. It's a cozy little spot with super friendly baristas and a lovely waitstaff. The food was good. I had the Brekky Board which consisted of Boiled Eggs & Soldiers (little slivers of toast that you dip into the eggs) and fresh fruit with yoghurt and muesli. McKay had the Chorizo Omelet special. Bottom Line: Good food. Again, though, it doesn't beat the likes of neighbouring brunch spot favourites Robocog and Bruschetteria 102. Wouldn't be upset about eating here again, but not the best I've ever had.

Yelp
A surprise find for a good breakfast! The cafe is small but their service is fast so getting a table for 2 was fairly easy when we went. I would definitely go back. Mid-morning (10am) on a sunny day, the cafe gets a lot of sunlight so sitting outside is pleasant. I notice that they put up a sun blocker to make it more pleasant for people sitting inside too. Very thoughtful.

Yelp
I love breakfast! Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Pancakes, eggs benny, french toast, and all sorts of other deliciousness! I have had many breakfasts all over Sydney and the breakfast I had at Le Monde would rank as one of my favorite. I ordered the breakfast board which included toast soliders and yoghurt and muesli with fruit. Although the breakfast was simple everything was done really well. The eggs were perfectly cooked with the right amount of gooeyness. While the yoghurt and muesli was simply delicious. I just wanted more! Will definitely be back again to try other things on the menu!

Yelp
Food is nice and well priced. Ordered 2 bacon and egg muffins and the yogurt. Everything was delicious and tasty. The decor is a little outdated and the waitress serving seemed miserable like she didn't want to be there. Never a fantastic experience when some of the staff aren't very friendly. Lovely staff behind counter.

Yelp
Had the special of Prosciutto, fig...poached eggs, avocado and Truffle oil. Super yum. Had breakfast envy as I saw the potato rosti dish so will be back tomorrow. Food came quickly. Looked amazing. Friendly staff. Good selection of free newspapers to read - big bonus! Hard surfaces so sound can be a it amplified My new favorite breakfast place in Sydney.

Yelp
Great menu, good coffee and friendly service. Real shame it's not open Sundays though as it's great value too. Nice cosy atmosphere with plenty of great options on the menu - rosti is always a winner Just a short walk from Central Station so handy for a good value meal before heading off exploring on a Saturday.

Yelp
I really like Le Monde, it's a small cafe on Foveaux Street that sort of sits halfway up the steepest section of the infamous hill. It's got great food, the staff are all really friendly and I've never had a bad coffee there. I remember, upon my return from overseas, this was the first time I met up with my fellow filmmakers to discuss what was in the pipeline for the next few months. A joyous occasion of hugs, stories and work. The food doesn't come in large servings but the food that does come is delicious and there's a really nice atmosphere in the place as well. Woe betide you if you need to use the bathroom though as it's a five minute walk through a car park, up a nondescript staircase and through an abandoned corridor. I had a new Greek Captains hat upon my return from my travels and I planned to show it off in Le Monde that day, but unfortunately our producer happened to be wearing a Greek Captains hat that day as well. I didn't let this dismal misery get me down. I was at Le Monde and I really like Le Monde.

Yelp
Not much about the place that is French apart from the name and, I guess, the French toast. However, it really doesn't matter much. The food is delicious. Like anything in this part of the City, you're going to battle traffic and limited parking to find a place to leave the car. Worth the effort though. The French toast is delicious - and not sickly sweet, thanks to the yoghurt and granola topping to balance the maple syrup. The truffled eggs has a hint of lemon that also does well to balance the flavours and everything is well presented. Didn't have the coffee - stuck to chai latte - which is nice and warm on a cold morning. Service was prompt and food came out quickly. It's quite open so can be a little chilly up front in winter, but still a great place to come.

Yelp
I came here again as I really wanted the matcha hot cakes and last time they were sold out. This time, we managed to score some and they were delicious - two beautifully fluffy matcha pancakes topped fruits like kiwi fruit, orange, strawberries, blueberries, icing sugar, some toasted oats and accompanied by a chocolatey coffee syrup. This was one of the nicest things we have eaten in a long time. We also got the potato rosti, flavoured with sweet potato, well poached runny eggs with tomato and feta - this was also excellent! We were hungry so also shared a bircher as well with a poached pear, fruits and pomegranates. For drink I got a huge matcha latte with my favourite thing - latte art, done very well! We loved this place and certainly lives up to the instagram pictures!
google avatar

Barbara D.

Yelp
Award-winning coffee and excellent breakfast choices including my potato rosti topped with smoked salmon. We also shared a fig bread plate - yum!! Yelp comes through again to help me find this gem within easy walking distance of the Central train station in Sydney.

Yelp
Le Monde Cafe serves up the best coffee in Sydney. Hands down. The best. No competition. I'd even go as far to say it might just be the best cafe in Sydney, but that is up to you to decide. Clearly it's my favourite and a quick scan of the many awards and reviews on the walls proves I'm not alone. This Foveaux Street institution has been serving up beautiful coffee for six years - yep that's back before Justin Hemmes and Co started buying all the pubs in the area and turning them into shabby-chic hangouts for hipsters. Run by Anthony and Renee and supported by a crew of super friendly staff, Le Monde go the extra mile to get to know their customers and remember their names and orders. I went away for five years and they still remembered me when I returned! Now THAT is how to make your customers feel special. It's not just the coffee and great service that will win you over, the food is pretty darn good too. The breakfast menu is brimming with all the usual morning delights, the scrambled egg muffins are a stand-out! The lunch menu mixes deluxe sandwiches with scrummy mains and there's a big specials board that throws up some pretty tasty meals. Le Monde pulls an eccletic crowd with the taxi garage next door there's always a cabbie or two rubbing shoulders with the fashionistas from the local fashion houses, then there's the staff from the local ad agencies, design studios, publishing companies and of course the loyal locals. This impressive cafe is not to be missed. Try it, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Wowser, this café is busy. My partner and I showed up on a Saturday late morning (after going through the Sydney Morning Herald Best Cafés for 2011 list where this café was handed the gong for Best Breakfast) and we were greeted with way too many people and not enough tables. We gave our name and then stood around for 15 minutes like many others until we were called by which time we knew what we wanted to eat and by then was so darn hungry that we had tricked our mind into believing we had in fact already eaten it. At least I did. I had gone in wanting eggs and sat down ordering the rich chocolate brownie. And it was devilishly good (were you really expecting anything else?) My partner's poached eggs and side of avocado with bread was also very devilishly good. You would be pleased to know that these guys are serious about coffee so that's another big bonus. Once you're done go up to the counter with your bill and pay. It's fast and they encourage it (for what would be obvious reasons by now).
google avatar

Isabel Y.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while so I thought I would come back to see if the coffee was still as good as was a year ago. And it still is. Coffee is strong and the chocolate brownie is amazing, almost as good as Bourke St bakery. Also I love the fact that I got a bottle of water before I even got a chance to sit down. Big tick! This place is wonderful for an afternoon coffee if you live or work near here as its bustling but not packed out. I like to sit outside if the weather is nice, but the only problem is that I can now see El Loco directly across the road and I feel like a taco while sipping my coffee! lol

Yelp
It's away from main light rail construction project so it makes for a nice warm haven on Foveaux where you can turn it into your office for the day, enjoy a catchup with mates or just indulge. The menu plays into our comfort zones without being too over the top. This is good, because you can rely on it's consistency and invest without taking too much risk. Our meal today focused on their signatures: CRUNCHY POTATO ROSTI (with smoked salmon, also available with smokehouse bacon FYI, roasted cherry tomato, feta, spinach and poached egg). Subtle enhancements to the hollandaise sauce with Saffron and a crumbling of crushed pistacchio are a welcome touch that revitalises predictability in this dish. CONFIT PORK BELLY: (Beetroot puree, avocado salsa, roasted cherry tomato, radish pickles, poached eggs, orange sauce and toast). Interesting play on a number of technique and flavors here. MATCHA HOTCAKES: Don't hate, but I was pretty immune to the matcha craze with the fashionable on-trend regurgitations of lattes, cupcakes, donuts, sauces, crumbles and what not, but I really enjoyed these and could not get enough. The matcha flavor is subtle allowing the mascarpone cream and fresh fruit to have their moments and it's all brought together with the coconut espresso syrup. Amazing amazing dish and amazing signature. There's a choice of indoor and outdoor tables, wait times were exceptionally fast and perfect for the restrictive lunch hour. Each dish deserving of a gasp as they were brought to the table by the friendly and attentive service attendants. Great standout in the Surry Hills cafe scene!

Yelp
Staying in Paddington on holiday and stopped in for breakfast on my way to the harbor for the Dragonboat races. The Yelp reviews that brought me here certainly didn't mislead. Excellent service, tasty food that came out 10 mins after I ordered, and a short 10 min walk from my door. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area!!

Yelp
This cafe has a very unassuming facade. An easily miss-and-pass location. We have the address in hands and still can't find it. A large overcast awning block half of the entrance and the signage was not bright and attention-drawing. Anyhow, we did find it and it was a nice little gem-find too! We ordered their signature dishes: The Potato Rosti and the Croque Monsieur and they were delish! Flavoursome, moreish with good premium ingredients. They were filling and satisfying delicious. The ideal brunch selections. We've been missing out of these times...

Yelp
Le monde is a popular breakfast and brunch spot on Foveaux Street in Surry Hills. On weekends be prepared to wait for a table. The coffee is great and if you are a matcha fan go for the matcha latte for something different. The most popular menu item is the matcha hot cakes with mascarpone cream, fruit and coconut espresso. That dish is a visual delight. I went for the pear Bircher muesli that in addition to the poached pear had plenty of fresh fruit including blueberries, mandarine, kiwi and strawberries. We also ordered the crunchy potato rosti with smokehouse bacon, tomato, feta, spinach, poached egg and hollandaise. This cafe has beautiful dishes and the prices are what I would call cheap when compared to other similar brunch spots. The week menu is different to the Saturday brunch offerings and we will definitely be coming back to sample some of those! The staff are very friendly and make sure that you are looked after, even when it is busy. Parking along the street is not as bad as you expect on a Saturday and you can grab a 2 hour spot on Foveaux Street which is more than enough time to finish brunch off with a stroll around the area as well. If you are in the area put Le Monde on your list

Yelp
I was curious to check this place out, after the rave reviews. This cool little cafe is in quite a good location in the funky surry hills area, which is fast becoming one of my favourite areas of Sydney. I went for two coffees here, my usual double mac and then I followed it up with an espresso. Whilst both were good neither were as good as some of the other places in the area, although I do like places that rotate through different single origin coffees. The bean on my visit was an Indian bean, which interested me as I have not had many coffees with beans from this region. Coffee: Double macchiato / espresso Bean: Single Origin Crema: Not bad, a little thin 6.5/10 Overall Taste: A little harsh actually, I suspect something in the roasting. 6.5/10 Served in: Small glass (+1) Preparation: Crema a little thin, but other then that well prepared. I would definitely go back and try again, the service is friendly, the venue interesting and I would like to try some of their coffees from other areas.

Yelp
Best coffee in Surry Hills and some of the best in all of Sydney. The food is amazing too. They are known for their award winning coffee and their focus on breakfast foods (it *is* the most important meal of the day)! They even have a breakfast degustation, which I am dying to try. There are plenty of vegetarian items on the menu. The service is great, and they get to know the regulars which keeps me coming back. Everyone who works there seems like they're family or long time friends or something which gives is a good welcoming vibe. They are closed on Sunday, which is a bummer.
google avatar

Tamer M.

Yelp
In a nutshell this place is awesome! This place is passionate about the coffee and their food. And you can tell. Coffee beans are a home blend and quite smooth. The only problem is that there isn't much room to sit, so try to reserve or come early. And trying to pick what to eat for the awesome menu was a serious challenge. The staff is really friendly and accommodated good choices - for a particularly picky friend of mine.
google avatar

Shane P.

Yelp
Superb breakfast spot away from the hustle and bustle of crown st. Walked straight in without a reservation. Pretty standard breakfast fare with a twist here and there and excellent coffee.

Yelp
Heard fab things about this cafe, so decided to check it out for lunch today. Service was friendly, and very quick (which I love at lunch!). My man had the Pork & rice (and a huge chocolate milkshake that naturally I had my fair share of!) and I had the Chicken and quinoa salad. I must say, I preferred the Pork, but both dishes were really tasty, and very reasonably priced. Would love to go back for brekky next time.

Yelp
Lovely cafe, friendly staff, amazing food! We came by for brunch after hearing a lot of good things about le monde cafe and we weren't disappointed. The place is a bit dark but very cosy, the chairs are particularly comfortable. The staff smiles at you and is very polite, a great plus. Now to the food: I ordered the zucchini and haloumi fritters with extra sourdough bread: a fantastic choice, delicious and tasty thanks to unidentified spices used in the mix, yum! Also, the cooks are definitely not stingy with the portions. My partner ordered scrambled eggs with feta and a side of avocado, equally delicious apparently. The coffee has great flavor, much more fragrant and strong than most coffees I've tried in Sydney, I understand why they won a few awards for their coffee over time. The place also has a high table where you can sit down and read some of the many newspapers and magazines available. A great place for a weekend brunch!!

Yelp
Today I can say I'm finally getting a handle on the prices here: I paid $18.50 for a coffee and a sandwich and didn't make a snide remark about it. Bravo, me! Le Monde Cafe can be forgiven for a french name because it served pretty good modern Aussie fare. I ordered a flat white, standard, perfect temperature, delicious, and the haloumi sandwich. The salty haloumi was balanced with red onion jam and spinach. Yum. My dining partner slowly but resolutely ate her whole massive plate of fritters so I can assume she liked them. The meal was filling but not heavy which is exactly what you need at lunch time, something that won't induce you into a food coma and make an already difficult Friday afternoon impossible. I was so tempted by the gorgeous plate of brownies at checkout. I'll definitely venture back over to Surry Hills to try their all day breakfast menu in the future.

Yelp
Breakfast options kept a vegetarian and an American meat eater happy. The almond milk latte was great.

Yelp
I only just discovered this adorable cafe on Foveaux St, and I have to agree with the rest of Sydney, that it saves a mean brew! We quickly sat down for a catch up, and were immediately approached by one of the friendly staff who took our order for fruit juice & coffee. Although the cafe was steadily busy, nearly immediately we were served with a freshly squeezed juice, and coffee that was brewed by angels. I have a number of favourite cafe spots in Sydney, and this jumps straight to number 1 or 2 depending on location, to my favourite caffeine labs. Although it was filled with locals, mostly understated hipster and creative types amongst the business lunches at prime time cafe hour, the vibe was relaxed and calm. Definitely my new caffeine haunt.
google avatar

Alice D.

Yelp
We visited here in the afternoon. The milkshake is so huge that we didn't feel hungry until night. Many magazines and newspapers are accessible. Atmosphere is relaxing there. However, the toilet is a bit far away as it's outside of the cafe.
google avatar

Helen M.

Yelp
This award-winning cafe ( winning for excellence in coffee making) should also win awards for excellent customer service. Start coming to Le Monde on a regular basis and before you know it, they will know your name and use it! They are always friendly and the place is always filled with their loyal regulars. The menu is way above average cafe food and you should try the biscuits or freshly made, evil, calorie-filled home-made slices on the counter. Heaven. Le Monde is all about the coffee and they go out of their way to improve coffee quality and knowledge and Renee and Ant and the ever smiling staff are terrific hosts.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Not only is the food great, the menu has a unique variety of options as well as the classics. The staff are friendly and the prices are very reasonable.
google avatar

James E.

Yelp
Um, yep, great. Food is yummo, without being the bestest everest or anything. Coffee is also delicious, as attested to by my mate who visit twice a day. Every day. Seriously.
google avatar

Ato B.

Yelp
Perhaps the best breakfast place in Surry Hills. The poached eggs with pumpkin and the zucchini fritters with eggs are just superb. Coffee is outstanding as well.
google avatar

Johnny G.

Yelp
You will be satisfied with anything you pick from the menu. If you're undecided, try the fritters

Andrew M.

Yelp
Went with my wife, We had pasta and salad both excellent, so yummy. I had take away coffee, smooth, not burned like many other coffee shop !
google avatar

Fernanda S.

Yelp
Tucked away in Surry Hills, but definitely worth a visit. I went on a week day so didn't have to wait for a table which was great. The coffees are really really good, and I dare say you'll be happy with anything out of the breakfast/brunch menu as both mine and my friend's meals were so good we stopped talking soon after the first bite.

Harry N.

Yelp
if you're in sydney, come to this cafe! it's a 10 minute walk from the tram station, so nice and accessible. they have clean toilets and very helpful staff. but the coffee... sent from the stars. somehow you can taste the beans and milk together perfectly. let me put it this way: we ordered six coffees, and we got six cups of liquid gold. everyone needs le monde
google avatar

Candace D.

Yelp
FANTASTIC! I work just a block over from this place and I couldn't be happier! The coffee is some of the best I have and I live on Crown street so I have plenty of options. The staff is incredibly friendly and I am so pleased to be a regular. Shout out to Maverick who works the counter...he remembers my name and order...no way I am having my morning coffee somewhere else with their service and product.

Iain F.

Yelp
Great solid menu with reasonable pricing. I had the pork belly, she had the potato rosti. I had food envy when it rolled out but both ended up being very solid choices! Pretty noisy inside but a good morning nonetheless!
google avatar

Sanzen I.

Yelp
I really like the place, i mean the restaurant. They have like the chill and relax ambiance there. But the food itself was okay. I tried the egg benedict. It tastes okay but nothing special is there in the food
google avatar

Amit D.

Yelp
Good coffee, good service. The scrambled eggs and muffin were good, but poached eggs and toast were average. Poached eggs smelt of vinegar. Espresso was great.
google avatar

G A.

Yelp
Wonderful cafe. Dined on weekday early morning for breakie. The rosti potato with poached eggs and Schulz smokehouse bacon was to-die-for. Wonderful muffin and coffee. Service friendly and efficient. Industrial sleek decor with more cozy tables at the back wall with cushions.

Sydney R.

Yelp
Great spot for breakky. Food is really yummy here!! And the coffee is always perfect! Definitely worth a visit..

Yelp
I always love a good breakfast. I had the zucchini & haluomi frittas & berry yoghurt with granola. Perfect meal. I also saw they had boiled eggs with soldiers which is pretty cute. I can't fault this place :)
