Where to Sip, Eat, and Stay in Quebec City

"Housed in a former mill built in 1720, this spot is recommended for lunch in warmer months when one can enjoy summer delicacies in a historic riverside setting." - Nina Caplan

I had fond memories of this place from a visit close to 40 years ago. It was a delightful simple place with a helpful staff serving great food. But things have changed. For one thing, the food is absolutely awful. For another, the kitchen seems to be overwhelmed: it took over an hour and a half for our dinner to get to the table. Dishes were uniformly disappointing: tasteless, ineptly prepared, and barely warm. The wait staff, with the exception of one friendly young man who welcomed us to the table, was perfunctory and inattentive. At these prices, one expects top-notch food and service. As another reviewer observed, this once wonderful place has morphed into a tourist trap.

We ate here on a weekday night on the patio. The atmosphere was lovely and our server was great. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli and had squash jam for the first time which was amazing. Some in my party ordered appetizers as their main meals and it was not substantial enough, so I would advise against this. They have a couple of vegetarian options which are labeled on the menu.

Restaurant had closed right when we arrived at 2:30pm. The server came from the parking lot to the door and offered to reopen. We were grateful as we were excited about the French Onion soup. Literally, the best service and soup. Absolute visit if you're in the area. Sit outside If you can. There is a beautiful waterfall.

Picturesque, quaint and absolutely delicious French meal. We could not have chosen better after a fun filled morning at the Falls.

Came to try this restaurant as it was a recommendation from a friend and it truly did not disappoint! It is a hidden gem on the island with a magical view of the waterfall by the outdoor patio space. Serves traditional French food by a charming old house. The service was also great👍

This is hands down one the best restaurants I’ve been to. Delicious affordable food with amazing service. They are accommodating for dietary restrictions as they made an amazing vegan dish for one of my friends. This restaurant can only be described as a Michelin star level restaurant in a family friendly, warm atmosphere.

Yelp
We stopped here for a group lunch while on a tour in Quebec. The grounds are very picturesque, with a waterfall just outside. The food was surprisingly very good. The vegetable soup was very flavorful and creamy. The cod was fresh and came with a wonderful mix of veggies. The dessert was a slice of delicate cake with a strawberry crème filling.

Yelp
A very pleasant dinner with the family On my journey thru the relaxing farmlands of Quebec City, my family and I stumbled upon this pleasant French Canadian restaurant. I had a lovely experience here. Ambiance- my family and I arrived just as the restaurant opened and was one of the first customers to sit. The place is clean and the service is very friendly. As the dinner progressed a huge tour group arrived and filled up the entire restaurant! Here's where i take out 1 star as the restaurant became less quaint and more touristy. The location is in the side of a mountain- with a little running river and a little draw bridge you can walk across. This same river provides the water to the bathroom- very eco friendly. Food: delicious! I ordered the French onion soup and the pork tenderloin. No complaints- but nothing that burns in my culinary memory though. It's done properly and tasted well. Bathroom and parking- yes Love it or dump it- I liked it- worth a stop if you are in the area- nothing to get out of your way for though!

Yelp
We loved this restaurant. Le Moulin was definitely the highlight of our trip to Île d'Orléans. The atmosphere was beautiful with the waterfall behind us and the interior was quaint and eclectic. The shrimp appetizer was delicious and the pork too! We even loved the iced tea. Thank you so much!

Yelp
This was one of the best meals I have ever had. I ordered the onion soup and lemon chicken pasta. the verre huille (green oil) was amazing. the chives and shallots they use in the food is from their own garden. I was there on a weekday afternoon. I was the only one sitting indoors. There were a few tables filled outside. The restaurant is a lovely, stone building. I didn't really see the waterfalls, but the ambience of the indoors was more than enough for me. My French is pretty stale and I don't have much vocabulary but I spoke with the staff in french as much as I could. Thoroughly enjoyed this meal.

Yelp
The escargot was really good. Everything was not salty and farm fresh. I would have like the vegetable to be cook a few minutes longer and the hen to be cooked a little less around the breast. However the super crispy skin did make up for it. My highlight was definitely the pork tenderloins. That pork was cooked perfectly and not dry at all. The meet was soft and super juicy (not the oozing with blood type) I would to go with the pork the next time.

Yelp
A beautiful spot for lunch during a visit to the island. Beautiful views and delicious food, reasonably priced for gourmet cuisine. Highly reccomended! We found this resto off our Gourmand map and will also visit the local vineyard and maple shacks!

Yelp
****we never returned bad food back at any restaurants but we had to then we had to pay for it***** Only thing that was good about this restaurant was the beautiful waterfall and that's the end of anything good to say about this place. We opted for sitting outdoor because of the ambiance, the owner took us to the table very quickly. While walking to the table, I asked her if they have kid's menu (for my 7 year old child), she asked me back "you mean small portion? Yes" she said. When we got to the table, the waitress greeted us quickly for drink, 2 water & 7-Up. She disappeared then return about 7-8 minutes later to take order with no drinks. Fine, I'm sure it will show up soon, I hope! We ordered ham with Crepe, French Onion soup and Escargot. French onion soup (1/5)- super salty! I mean I'm Asian and I can handle fish sauce. The chef (if you can call that) must have dropped a bag of salt into the broth. A young server (buser) came by the table, we had to tell him about our drink 1 more time, he quickly brought the drinks to us right away. I was in need to water after that soup. Finally the escargot (0/5) & ham with crepe (2/5) came. We ate out all the time and when the food is bad, we tried not to complain and just tried our best to finish it. This time was exceptional bad, either the sauce was bad or escargot was. It said on the menu the escargot in garlic butter but whatever it was in, it was inedible. I had a piece and had difficulty swallowing it. Wife tried it and she spit it out right away. We told the waitress about returning it and she said it was in some kind of sauce and offering to make it in garlic butter. Wait! Wasn't it supposed to be in garlic butter anyway? I politely said it's ok, it's too late now and we needed to head to the waterfall as our next stop. Ham with crepe was so underwhelming, the sauté vegetables that came in the side was disgusting. I think it's mixed with red wine but it's so sour for wine acidity that you can't taste anything else. So the waitress came back later with the bill, the escargot was still on it & she said it's on the menu that it was served in this sauce (I didn't get what the sauce she was saying) and she won't take it off. The menu clearly said Escargot in garlic butter sauce & if that was the garlic butter sauce then this chef needs to learn how to cook. We didn't make a big deal out of this since it wasn't the waitress' decision so we paid and left her a tip anyway. Just to recap, service is super slow even there's only few tables. Foods SUCKED and you will still have to pay for it.

Yelp
The best thing about our dinner at Le Moulin de St-Laurent was the violin music provided by Monsieur Verret! Otherwise, I would say both the food & service was passable, mediocre. The atmosphere and art in this charming old house was quite lovely. But I found nothing particularly interesting about my pork tenderloin dish with chopped boiled potatoes & gravy that could as well have come from a packet. Rather a standard Sunday dinner at grandmother's house (if your grandmother charges $25-30 per meal).

Yelp
I am the Yelper in the family but I let my mom pick this one from a Frommer's guide book. Beside the quaint mill building and barely trickling natural waterfall in back of the outdoor patio there wasn't a ton going for this restaurant. Evidently they cater to the tour bus crowd, from the city or from a cruise I don't know and it feels like they aren't trying very hard due to their contracted influx of patrons. There was a bus in the parking lot when we got there but luckily the party was less than 15 people who we're finishing up lunch. Most of us ordered the ham and cheese crepes which were pretty bland and tasteless. My son had the pasta which was very over cooked and watery. My husband had a pork salad which he said was ok. The staff was strangely alternately off putting then chatty. This area had other restaurants I would have picked based on Yelp reviews. Not sure what to make of the Frommer's recommendation? Would not go back and would not recommend.

Yelp
A wonderful venue with fresh, regional cuisine. We had 8 people with kids, they sat us at 8:00 (30 minutes before closing) without a problem. We loved the food and service was impeccable. I had pork tenderloin with fresh green beans, mashed potatoes, and a apple cider sauce. We also had a local wine, cheese plate, and dessert. Everyone was happy, including my 7 and 11 year old.

Yelp
My husband and I came here fo dinner during our anniversary weekend vacation. Meal was very good but we were extremely disappointed that we were seated with a huge tour group and subjected to a n hour long sing-along (accompanied by a good violinist) with no explanation whatsoever. Apparently this is a regular routine on weekend nights. The place caters to tours and does-not notify the other patrons when they make a reservation. It was impossible to have a conversation through the entire evening and we only could only listen to a party of over 50 singing "Que Sera" and other schmaltzy tunes and make the best of it since we were not part of the group. It was very awkward. Nothing against parties or tours, but I would like know ahead of time if I am going to be stuck in the middle of one when I am paying for a nice meal with the intentions of a quiet night. We wanted to leave but it wasn't really convenient and we were hungry after a long day of travel. Again the food was good, 3-4 stars, but the experience was zero.

Yelp
Young wait staff worked very hard but one of older female wait staff was very rude. She took our drink order (included wine, cola, & water) but when my wife asked for coffee (the table was preset with coffee cups & saucers) employee sharply said "NO", we couldn't have coffee until AFTER our meal. A full coffee pot of fresh coffee was within 8' of our table. -------------- I complained over her head and she grudgingly poured a cup of coffee for my wife. Our service went from bad to worse... Other 5 people at our table were served their dessert but mine didn't come until I asked another wait staff for mine & others in my party were almost completed with their dessert (identical dessert item to what I had ordered). ---------------------- I'm a lover of game meat, but my elk/bison/venison stew was overcooked, dry and so gamey tasting it was inedible. My wife's salmon was dry & tasteless.  She took 2 bites & left the rest of the meal. A wasted evening. ------- A possible contributing factor; management allowed 3 full tour buses (total approx 150 people) to enter the restaurant simultaneously. Very poor business decision. ------- August 11, 2016
