I'd like to be able to give the Moulin du Roc a 5* review to match its stated 5* ranking as a hotel but sadly I cannot - it's more like 4.5*. ||One reason is because its restaurant closes on a Tuesday and it operates with a skeleton staff who, if there are many resident hotel guests, are stressed and the service standards drop somewhat. Doubtless that is to keep costs down - which I totally understand - but the hotel is quite remote and there are no other dining options within walking distance. The hotel will provide a sort-of picnic from the excellent Bocaux de Liens in Brantôme for a Tues dinner if you don't want to go out.||Another reason, and I concede this is more a matter of a personal taste, the bedroom décor is just weird and somewhat creepy, particularly the light fittings. And talking of lights, as is all too common, there was not enough artificial light to read by after dark in our bedroom. Given that all our fellow guests definitely needed reading glasses (including us!), this is a basic error! ||Lastly, the breakfast was only adequate and not up to the standard of the excellent fine dining you'll experience, using the same space, in the hotel's Roda restaurant. For instance there's a very noisy self-service expresso machine that's in constant use by guests, the fresh fruit bowl had peaches which were woolly and tasteless as it was past their season, not enough figs which were in season & the cereal selection looked bought-in rather than home-made.||Having covered the less-good bits, the staff are wonderful, speak very good English, are helpful & knowledgeable. Our bedroom, décor & lights aside, was large, quiet, comfortable, had fast WiFi and had a great bathroom. The hotel grounds are lovely and I would imagine the swimming pool is great in the summer. There's free charging (courtesy of the water mill?) for EVs although their parking lot isn't for beginners - if you're a bit nervous, it's best to leave the keys with the concierge! ||Overall, it's a really nice hotel to stay comfortably for a few nights, to use as a base to explore the many sites in the region. Recommended.
