My husband and I stayed at this hotel from Friday, 12 September through Thursday, 18 September to celebrate our ten-year wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely distressing and I would not recommend this property to anyone.||On the evening of September 13, I became suddenly and violently ill after returning to our room early from dinner due to stomach discomfort. Over the course of the night, I experienced severe and continuous vomiting and diarrhea about every twenty minutes and, on at least three occasions, I lost total control of my bowels and was not able to make the toilet. The villa’s open-plan bathroom offered no privacy, and my husband was forced to witness the entire ordeal. I’m forever thankful to my dear husband who did clean up after me in each of these instances, although this is certainly not how we imagined spending our ten year wedding anniversary. |I am a relatively healthy person have never, ever experienced an illness of this severity before. At one point I was concerned that I would lose consciousness while on the toilet and hit my head and suffer serious injury.||The following day, I was completely confined to bed and unable to eat or retain even small amounts of water without throwing up. My husband contacted reception to inquire about medical assistance but was informed that the nearest doctor was on another island and not available due to it being Sunday. No medical alternatives were offered.||My condition did not improve for several days. From the 14th, 15th, and 16th, I remained too weak to leave the room, including being unable to walk to the hotel’s only restaurant. As a result, we were forced to rely on room service, which I could barely eat. On the 16th, my husband had to attend a prepaid, non-refundable private snorkeling excursion alone. By the 17th, I was only just strong enough to sit outside on the villa deck for more than a few minutes, though still not well enough to walk the short distance to dining facilities.||We checked out on Thursday, the 18th. While waiting at the dock for our transfer to the airport, the hotel manager greeted and said farewell to all other departing guests before us, despite us arriving first. When he eventually spoke to us, I explained what had occurred. He expressed sympathy and said he wished we had informed him earlier, which was surprising given that reception, housekeeping, and room service staff were all aware of my significantly poor condition.||While I cannot say with certainty what caused my illness, I do have concerns regarding food and beverage hygiene. On the day that I became sick, my husband and I had each ordered a pina colada at the pool bar. The bartender handed us our drinks by pinching the rims of the glasses rather than holding the stems, which I recall noticing at the time. In hindsight, this raised concerns about sanitation and I wish I had said something. Further, during the one breakfast I was able to attend before I became sick over the course of our weeklong stay I recall flies and other insects swarming the food set out at the buffet.||This situation could have been far more serious had I been elderly, pregnant, or had underlying health conditions and I feel fortunate that I didn’t suffer any serious long-term harm other than the lost money from such a terrible experience. ||Finally, on a slightly different note, we paid a premium for a sunset overwater villa. Although our villa was technically on the sunset side of the island, it was positioned in such a way that the sunset was obstructed by the island rather than visible over the water. This was not consistent with how the room was advertised and did not reflect the price we paid. Our villa was the only villa that appeared to have this issue.||Overall, this was a deeply disappointing and unsettling experience that overshadowed what was meant to be a special anniversary celebration.
