14 Surprisingly Romantic Places in Chicago

"Cataloguing the history of both the BDSM and leather culture through artifacts, equipment, and a massive library of literature, Chicago’s Leather Archives & Museum is more than just a collection of handcuffs, whips, and chains, treating the history of fetish subculture as a serious movement worth preserving.   The museum covers all manner of niche sexuality from straight fetishism to LGBT interests of all stripe. There are displays of bondage equipment, leather apparel, and the sort of underground artifacts one might expect from a leather museum. There are antique sexual devices as well as a dungeon in the basement complete with spanking apparatus.  Possibly more remarkable, if only for its sheer academic mundanity, is the expansive library of writing, art, and video materials related to the movement. The library contains full runs of influential fetish magazines like Bound & Gagged, in addition to countless original writings from important figures in the culture. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of original work by famed homosexual painter Etienne, as well as a number of original works by possibly the most well known artist in the genre, Tom of Finland. While there is plenty at the museum to titillate guests at the Leather Archives & Museum, the most shocking aspect may simply be the devotion to the history of an important and often underrepresented subculture." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Super cool museum, so important to tell these histories!! I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of women & nb people represented in the museum :( there’s a section for women like Gayle Rubin etc, which i appreciated, but it was strange to have them in a separate section. There was also an entire exhibit dedicated to religious-sexual art parallels, which I was thrilled about as a religious scholar, but unfortunately the paintings were (basically) 100% cis men :( let’s get some fabián cháirez in there ‼️‼️‼️ let’s talk about jesus’ side wound as portrayal of a queer body & a conduit for lesbian love in the middle ages! It’s a great museum, and I’m giving it 5 stars regardless, but I’d call it a museum of cis gay men’s history more than general queer history.

Google
Really fantastic place. I could’ve spent hours in the library. This is a very special place for queer history. Thanks for the work you do Leather Archives!

Google
The museum is such an incredible collection that is so well organized about the entire exhibit. The staff was thoughtful, going out of their way to help knowing that these are volunteers. I think that’s pretty incredible. You could really see the passion for the subject matter throughout the entire exhibit. Special exhibits were very thought-provoking and interesting. I highly recommend a visit.

Google
A part of Chicago's history as well as history for the LGBTQ community. It's always a good time here! The place is kept very clean & preserved. I got a chance to color this time!

Google
This place is FAHBULOUS! It really is a wonderful museum, and includes the diverse nature of leather. Hard to choose a favorite... Even the bathrooms are part of history in the making. The film viewing areas set the tone in their respective areas, and detailed biographies at each station are a nice touch. I love the auditorium! Great for events. How lucky to have such a place as this, and we are grateful we had the time for this lovely cultural experience. Remember to save time for the library! 💜

Google
Such a gem of a museum! Learned a lot, and the history is pretty fascinating. Loved browsing the library as well. Great place for the kink-curious and history buffs alike. They offer classes for various things, so there is a little something for everyone. Also enjoyed the variety of the art around the museum, especially the stained glass pieces. There were also some big books of patches which were fun to browse. Has a nice little gift shop, and i thought the admission price was low and more than fair! Will definitely be checking this place out again in the future, especially for the classes!

Google
This place is a testament to the power of the leather community. It’s not just whips and jackets it’s community care and love that holds this crew together. As you go through the archives you will see intimate histories of the people who built homes for themselves and others. There are binders of patches and stickers from across the country. Amazing art that celebrates the community as well as Tons of informative work. This place also contains a very good library of lgbtq texts that is a must for anyone interested in lgbtq history or literature. They have fiction, non fiction, pulp, photography works you name it they got it!

Google
Wonderful collection of leather culture and community. Impressive and moving archives. Not just from the United States.Soon accessible for wheelchairs, but already a very valuable aid. Best to ask first by phone.

Yelp
I am someone who is admittedly unfamiliar with leather and kink as a whole, much less the history of it. This museum, which might be seen as salacious to those who have never been exposed to this kind of material, is very informative and doesn't attempt to sanitize the realities (and conceptualized fictions) of the mainly queer participants of the leather/BDSM community. Even though it's a smaller museum, there's so much to see. They also have a library, but I can't really comment on that because I didn't have time to see it before I left. The staff at the front entrance was friendly and they have self-service lockers for your bags. I would definitely come back, and I probably will.

Yelp
This was a very unique and interesting museum. It had a really diverse collection of leather items, predominantly connected to leather daddies and other kink communities. There was an interesting exhibit on the pup community, the role of women and sex workers in leather culture, classic leather vests, and more. The library was also very impressive. It was a really cool place! They do have lockers they require you to store large bags in and they have a small gift shop too. Normally I believe there's a cost but when we went, it was free that day! Friendly staff and not too many people on a Thursday. I've seen most of the museums in Chicago but this was new and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in leather community history or looking for a unique museum off the beaten path. Many cute places nearby after if you're wanting to shop or eat after too.

Yelp
one of my absolute favorite places i visited on my trip to chicago. an amazing archive resource for the community that i am very envious of

Yelp
It's awesome a museum like this exists--I would recommend about an hour for it, unless you have an appointment for the archives or want to spend a lot of time in the library. A wide range of items with loving local history; I wish some of the descriptions for items gave more background, or that there was more of a curatorial narrative throughout the space, but it's clearly done thoughtfully. Happy to have gone!

Yelp
The Leather Archives and Museum is a unique and interesting museum located in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. I've been 3 times over the last 8 years and I've been impressed by the collection every time. The museum is definitely geared towards open minded adults. Some of the information and items profiled inside the museum seem to always stay, while other sections seem to be temporary/rotating exhibits. I'm always amazed at how much they fit into this relatively small museum. I always leave away learning so much. If you happen to have some free time on a Thursday, the museum is free to the public on this day of the week.

Yelp
I've been wanting to go here for years. An entire museum of the history of gay sex, queer life, and fetish. As leather bars around the country disappear I'm glad to see there is someone working to preserve such a unique facet of our lives. Gary runs a great space, fun and educational

Yelp
I am in total shock that I didn't know this was here. From the notes I took, since I had to be here for a class that I was in, I was so awestruck with everything. I was quite shocked that the leather museum had an exhibit on Bettie Page, the Queen of Pin up! This was an honor to see and to read all about the whole leather movement. All the pieces that are located inside are just wonderful with history, and you can see the care that went into this museum. I also like the fact that there is an actually library within the walls, Of course you cannot check books out, due to the age of many of them, but the fact that you can actually use them there and get awesome information is really a nice thing. During our visit there the head Manager gave us the tour and was really pleasent as well as knowledgable about the whole movement, for this I can appreciate the fact that I gave a 5 star beause I love when someone working there can actually give you facts. If you are not into this kind of movement, then this is not for you. After all you will see naked bodies all over in the art that is displayed and that may not be the best thing for everyone, the graphics are amazing but to me its art. Check them out as least once before making judgement, its not a bad museum in the least, but it is really graphic and in the lower level you will find items that you thought were only for the S&M culture, get ready its something totally different but with an awesome history lesson.

Yelp
This is an excellent presentation of the leather scene and associated kink (of which I admittedly know next to nothing about). They have an extensive library (you could spend hours there) and several floors of memorabilia, art and demonstrative pieces. So much to see!

Yelp
This is easily one of the most important institutions devoted to the documentation of leather culture and history in the United States. Much of the Museum is devoted to the material culture of the leather community. You will find examples of uniforms, patches and pins used by current and historical clubs and organizations as well as early examples of toys and equipment used during play time. The Museum also has a collection of interviews with members of the leather community and an extensive library of books devoted to sex, sexuality and leather culture. The museum is a must for any leatherperson interested in examining our history.

Kyler F.

Yelp
Had a nice and informing visit here. One could spend a while looking through binders of prints, patches, stickers, etc. their archive was extensive. The staff was friendly and helpful. Highlights included the video and set of a leather boot buffing station.

Yelp
i can't recommend this museum enough! we learned so much being here because the displays are so thoughtfully curated. any level of knowledge you have coming in is fine because the displays really walk you through the history of leather in the queer community, as well as explain and inform more about different specific kinks within said community. i was very surprised and thrilled about how much representation of women there was in the museum, since i hadn't known that women were such a big part of the leather community. this history of leather in queer spaces is so important and i really didn't know how much i didn't know going into it. i feel so thankful that this beautiful museum exists.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the Leather Archives and museum. Incredibly informative and very eye opening. I was familiar with some components of the leather community, but there was so much contextual information with which I was unfamiliar. Additionally I enjoyed the large collection of Etienne murals and art from various leather bars around Chicago. What a wonderful time!

Yelp
Ladies, don't let all the art depicting burly, hypermasculine men put you off--this is a welcoming institution where I (a vagina-owner) felt welcome at a recent event. There are film screenings, book archives, artifacts on display (hence the "museum" part of the name), and artworks in a gallery that features different material at different times, in addition to the decorative paintings that are always there. I got a kick out of the glass case near the entrance holding odds and ends from the building's previous incarnation, a church. One of the descriptive tags said it all: "How ironic...." Overall, this is a great place to bite off a little chunk of history as well as attend events, viewings, and art shows firmly rooted in the here and now. Note: I did not click the "not good for kids" bubble on my review of this place because I think people under 18 should never come here. I do feel, however, that a place that shows film gems such as "Graphic Sexual Horror" in its theater is a place that parents should decide to take their kids to, or not, after having thought about the age and maturity level of their spawn. A thoughtless thirteen year old boy could very easily alter the positive atmosphere this place has, and a five year old girl could ask some questions about the art that her parents aren't ready to answer. In short--good for some kids, not good for some others. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the art exhibits had somebody carding at the door.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I used to live a block away from here. There's flags up with cowboy boot silhouettes, and "L A & M" over the door. We theorized for a long time that it must be some sort of shoe factory. It was only through some small talk with a friend, that we found out that this little gem was actually a museum! We got a full tour, starting at the auditorium, and getting to see all those NEAT crazy paintings. The artifacts and dungeon were really fascinating as well (although some of the stuff took me a while to wrap my head around how they'd be used! :)) They have a great quiet library area, with leather porn, books, and magazines that have been archived. My favorite part was looking at all the IML photos from the past decades. I can't believe we walked by it daily for a year and had no idea what was inside. I would recommend highly for a good rainy day field trip while in Roger's Park--although, as a previous reviewer said, if you're a squeemish about Leather, this may not be the museum for you.

Yelp
One of the best small museums I have ever been to. So much to look at and learn about. Posted descriptions of each item on display are very informative and easy to read. Good balance between leather culture and bdsm exhibits. I highly recommend checking this place out if you are in the area. Also PENISES!!!!!! Oh and spend some time in the library as well. It's an incredible collection.

Yelp
My first trip to Chicago and this was the number one place I wanted to visit. I don't remember how I had learned about this place existing, but am so grateful I did! A really well-curated and interesting place that showcases the history of LGBTQ movements in Chicago and its connection to other cosmopolitans in the country and the incredibly rich variety and importance of the leather community. A great use of space showcasing a different facet of the leather community and a fantastic collection of artifacts, i.e. The Dungeon features an 8-lb butt plug! Would definitely go back and would recommend
google avatar

Lindsay O.

Yelp
This is definitely not a museum for those who are the least bit squemish on LGBT culture...much less leather culture. But if it is your thing or you have even a passing interest this place is a great resource. The admission is $5, and it's well worth the price. The museum contains mostly artwork but does have some interesting artifacts (most notably in the Dungeon). Overall, if you have an hour or two and $5 this is a great little gem of a museum in Rogers Park.

Yelp
This place is amazing! And rest assured--being in the leather community is NOT a pre-requisite for enjoying a visit here! Came here with my partner and perused the galleries. Really interesting stuff, and highlights an oft-forgotten chapter of Chicago history. Neither of us can say that we're part of the "scene" and we were able to ask the volunteers a lot of questions, and received very thoughtful answers. If you're on the far North Side and have an hour or two to kill, definitely consider the trip.

Yelp
I wanted to be impressed by this place but I wasn't. The guy who gave us the brief history of the place was really nice so that was a plus. They also have lockers which is another plus. Unfortunately, it was kind of downhill from there. I wanted to learn more about the BDSM culture in general but this is more of a place to look at artwork (a lot of it from the owner's partner, who was an artist who died from AIDS) ... They also seem to really focus on the various leather groups that were and are, which I didn't find to be interesting at all -- there is nothing fascinating about looking at insignia, etc. My boyfriend and I came with a totally open mind but there was just nothing that really fascinated either one of us, so perhaps you really do have to be part of the culture to find it interesting.
google avatar

Yelp
If you want to more about leather I suggest you. Is it the museum Lso more about the gay community as whole great artifacts from lend art title holders that come before us and. Beyond they donated their title vest or stole to the museum for where they came from also they do community service work all the area all year round lol

Yelp
Scholars studying sexuality who live in the Midwest are really lucky. Bloomington Indiana has the Kinsey Archives while 4 hours away in Chicago is the Leather Archives and Museum. Unlike the Kinsey, the LA&M is open to the public with wonderful exhibits on the gay leather lifestyle and BDSM in general. A new women's history exhibit just opened in May that's not to be missed. Not to be missed is the original Leather Pride flag on display in the lobby and the original Etienne murals from the old Gold Coast Leather Bar. Also spend some time in the library. They've got everything from How to Manuals to de Sade novels to old Drummer Magazines. Oh, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Lola L.

Yelp
Really unique collection, educational spot to learn about leather, BDSM, the gay leather scene in the 80s. Preserving a unique piece of Chicago history, and very, very nice owners/management. Lockers to store items in is a great plus, and discounts for students.
