Day Trips in Amsterdam

"The birthplace of Rembrandt and home to Holland’s oldest university — founded in 1575 by Prince William of Orange — Leiden is situated in the heart of the tulip-growing district, with a bucolic setting on the Rhine that could pass for a scene from a Vermeer painting. The town’s botanic garden features the world’s oldest academic observatory, once directed by botanist Carolus Clusius, known for cultivating a dizzying array of tulip species that fanned Dutch tulip mania. A free Leidse Loper app highlights 24 historic sites on a self-paced walking tour. For panoramic views, climb to the top of the De Valk Windmill Museum, a landmark that’s stood in Leiden since 1743. Inside, a working waterwheel and early-20th-century living spaces offer a peek into past lifestyles. Visit on a Wednesday or Saturday to browse some 200 stalls of an outdoor market, where vendors proffer cheese, bike parts, flowers, and other typical Dutch products. From Amsterdam Central take the Intercity train to Leiden Central. The journey takes less than 40 minutes." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Yelp
Disappointing changes to the menu, and after living in Leiden for 7 years, quite possibly the rudest service by one of the male wait staff. Really overpriced life what amounts to bar food and no concern for the experience of customers who have a severe food allergy. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

Yelp
Extrodinary Indonesian food but pricey. Dinner for two without drinks $ 172 US. It was a dining experience to do once. Service was excellent.

Yelp
great food, amazing location! i came here for dinner without a reservation and they were able to seat me right away. with a beautiful view of the canal, i ordered a pornstar martini and the buddha bowl. the buddha bowl was one of the best salads i've ever had. it was perfectly seasoned (usually i find restaurant salads overdressed) and came with perfectly crispy plant-based chicken. i was thinking about this salad for days afterwards. the pornstar martini was a little sweet and a little tart, which made it easy to enjoy. i will definitely return to try their other menu items if i come back to leiden!

Yelp
Like this place a lot and will keep coming back. The rating is for food only (and I only had several breakfast items) so here are the details: Pancakes - good, with blueberry sauce and maple syrup ( although I wish there was more maple syrup) with whipped cream on top. 4 stars Eggs Benedict- very good, with bacon (or some kind of lightly toasted cured ham) that was thinly sliced and I only wish there was more of it. One note though, the eggs were soft boiled eggs (not poached eggs) which, although acceptable, is not your traditional eggs benedict, especially if the eggs are over cooked like mine were. The hollandaise sauce was good, light and not too sour. They use some kind of farmer's bread, which worked well in the above combination. The whole dish needed more seasoning. Overall, between 3.5 and 4 stars, depending how big of a stickler you are for properly cooked eggs. Separately, the atmosphere and the setting is great!

Yelp
When every bite you take you stop and say "oh my gosh!! So good!" Beautiful atmosphere, excellent food! We stopped in for lunch on our way out to the windmills from Amsterdam and we were NOT disappointed. First off, the restaurant is set in the most picturesque little square. The server was very friendly and spoke English. 2 of us shared the meat and cheese plate to begin (we are suckers for a good meat and cheese selection) -- it was excellently presented and offered a good size and variety. They serve breakfast all day, so we followed our starter with eggs Benedict. So so good! Cooked to perfection, different that the standard US fare and just delicious. I would recommend for sure.

Yelp
The menu is all over the place! It's like the United Nations of menus. Japanese. Chinese. Mexican. Mediterranean. Dutch. American. Etc. Etc. Ultimately, we went with a few small bowls of ramen (the mushrooms were excellent), a poke bowl (it was meh), and peking duck pancakes (solid). The waffle with ice cream for dessert was wonderful (most of the other desserts looked great too). Even though it felt slightly manufactured, the ambiance in here for dinner is still lovely. It's dimly lit and calming. Drinks were good. And the service was friendly and professional.

Yelp
I have lived in Leiden for many years as a student. It seems like there appeared many good restaurants in the last couple of years, and this is one of them. The restaurant is big and nicely located in the old harbour of Leiden. The staff is young and very friendly. The menu is attractive; it was difficult for me to make a choice. Fortunately the staff could give me some recommendations. According to my friends the menu changes regularly. Ordering water is not necessary: there are several taps available providing water with different flavours.

Yelp
Delicious. Our table ordered most items (rib eye, sea bass, Peking duck, Lot's poke bowl, burgers. and pasta) and they were all tasty. The curry soup wasn't as good as everything else, but no place can be perfect.

Yelp
On the harbor, this place is a true gem in Leiden. Walk at the edge of the city for this unforgattable experience. The terrasse is perfect to enjoy your drink and the sunset. Very friendly staff, great fresh and local food at afforable price, warm atmosphere.

Yelp
I'm always thrilled when a small city like Leiden gets a new place that serves brunch. However, I have to say that I think this one still needs to come into its own. Four stars, not three, because it has the potential to be really great. But it's not there yet. Atmosphere: 4/5 Very cozy, both inside and outside! A beautiful, comfortable large terrace perfect for chilled out sunny days; inside looks like it will be perfect in the winter, with lovely relaxed seating thrown around a living-room-like interior. Toilets are horrible - like something out of a nightclub, pitch black and confusing - but they've got a note hanging saying that these are their 'next project' so I look forward to seeing them updated ;) Service: 3/5 Hit or miss. One server was terrible, another great. This would be an easy area for improvement that could really set them apart. Food: 3.5/5 Also hit or miss. I had the poached eggs which looked impressive but tasted... not altogether pleasing. The hollandaise was far too acidic, the whole dish lukewarm, and the bed of salad on top of the bread was incongruous with the textures and flavours of the plate. On the other hand, the omelette was apparently delicious and I saw some open-faced sandwiches float by that looked absolutely divine. Coffee was out of a push-button machine. Shame. But still quite drinkable. I will return in a few months and hope that there is improvement - this could be the next big brunch place in Leiden.

Yelp
What a charming place that we came across on our last morning in Leiden. It was raining and we were welcomed in before opening hours to at least sit and have coffee. The food and wait person was excellent. We would come back and refer to all.

Yelp
Really, really great restaurant! Food is lovely and well priced, staff is super friendly and nice, the decor and atmosphere is really lovely, the outdoor seating is one of the very best in the whole city. Menu is (like most Leiden cafes) a little heavy on the sandwiches and could use a little more variety. But even with that, all the food they have is still quite tasty, fresh, well prepared, and incorporates some fun international ingredients to make it a little more interesting than the few other places in town with a similar vibe. We've never come away from there dissapointed. New Year's recovery brunch was fantastic and can't wait to go in for Monday night fondue. (I do wish there was a bloody mary on the menu as i suspect they could make lovely one and I do miss those. Oh and eggs benedict with a honest to goodness english muffin, that would make me over the moon.)

Yelp
the food was A-OK, however, the staff was very rude and were begging for tips. the atmosphere was not really great as there weren't any wales or a girl named lotte. my overall experience was bitter. the French fries weren't prepared with my favorite seasoning: lemongrass. and the milkshake definitely was not shaken well and was not worth my $54... I would suggest that you change this joint inmediately!
