On the Grid : Leith Depot

"The three owners of Leith Depot are musicians, who used to rehearse next door. When the lease came up for this space they jumped at the chance of transforming what was then ‘the worst pub in the city’ into this bar and live music venue. The beer is cold, the food is excellent, so pull up a chair and watch the world go by. On the menu is a surprisingly varied and international selection of bar snacks and main meals, with vegetarians and vegan customers well catered for. Their homemade veggie burger, complete with beer battered onion rings and sweet potato wedges, is a popular offering - while the black pudding bonbons hit the spot. Recently, Stead’s Place that houses Leith Depot was almost demolished to make way for a five story monstrosity. After years of campaigning by the Save Leith Walk group, the city council finally unanimously voted against the demolition, so the 1920s sandstone building would stay. Approaching it’s fifth birthday, Leith Depot is here for good. We hope!" - fourcolourblack

Here for Fight Robots Fight 10th anniversary gig, with Guns At Brunch, and Rhuari Campbell (Slow For A Poet). Excellent venue, with local beer, nice staff, great atmosphere. I really enjoyed it here, and from the people I spoke to - so did everyone else :) Highly recommend. I'll be back - definitely. (Btw - I very very very rarely leave a review).

Place: Small space and tight quarters but a nice spot overall. Service: Super friendly staff, very accommodating - our whole crew commented on it afterwards just how sweet the servers were here. Food: Excellent - the halloumi and avocado salad was perfect. I had the Korean filthy chips, likely wouldn't order that again as they were more of a wedge / bigger potato pieces. Not bad just not what we anticipated. Prices: Well priced, especially for the quantity and quality. Conclusion: Nice restaurant that I would absolutely come back to.

Was here for an event then a late lunch. Their function room can perhaps comfortably house 30 people at most. It can get a bit stuffy, even in the winter months. On a Sunday, their kitchen may close at either 3 or 4 pm, check with bar staff. Also you probably want to reserve a table as the local demand varies. On the day friends and I decided to stay for a late lunch, staff were accommodating even though our numbers changed a couple times. It wasn’t busy though, mind. I went for their veggie breakfast with scrambled eggs. Even though it took a while to arrive, it arrived hot and nicely cooked. I particularly enjoyed their veggie haggis. Will be back to try other things on the menu. Friendly service.

Small restaurant, great ambiance, great music. The staff was amazingly kind. The food was delicious and the portions were just enough. I'd recommend to book in advance since there are live music and different events going on every few days. But it's totally worth it! I'll definitely go back if I happen to travel in Edinburgh in the future.

Decent veggie menu The halloumi salad was to-die-for, the favorite among salads at several fine dining restaurants in our 5(so far) days in Edinburgh. Ambience was local unassuming flavor.

Would I call this a gastro pub? Based on the cheese burger definitely not. I've passed this place many times but popped in with my partner for dinner for the first time this week. Lovely vibes and friendly welcome. Staff attentive and polite, great drinks selection. Food menu is good too, what you would expect from a pub. My burger was a real let down however, mainly due to the small and cheap but significant element: the bun. Dry, flakey, low quality... Please buy better ones... The fries were also quite mediocre. My partner's chicken burger was tasty and juicy, and he got cheese sauce as an extra, which they didn't charge for, so that was very kind!

What a gem Leith Depot is! From the moment you walk in, you're hit with such a positive vibe. The atmosphere is buzzing, but in a really relaxed way that just makes you want to settle in. We had some of the greatest food – seriously, every dish was delicious and clearly made with care. And the music? Absolutely spot on, creating the perfect backdrop without ever being too loud or intrusive. It all comes together for an unforgettable experience. Five stars aren't enough!

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink after lunch one afternoon to sit and get out of the rain. We had heard about this place for live music and hope to come back one evening to check that out. This place had a nice atmosphere and wasn't too busy but had an unusually long wait at the bar for a beer. There were some really good choices on tap. We sat by a window enjoying the view outside and I was distracted by the food at the table beside us. It looked amazing! I had wished we hadn't just had lunch so we could have ordered something...next time. I would definitely recommend this place if you're strolling around the area, and I will be sure to update my review when I come back to eat and check out some live music.

Yelp
As Ive just mentioned in my previous review you should not go to Scotland primarily for the cuisine. However the first thing I wound up eating in the country wound up being the delicious happy hour half order of fish n chips on offer at this establishment, a satisfyingly yet not annoyingly cool bar in the more thoroughly gentrified section of the rapidly gentrifying district of Leith, and it wound up being downright delicious, setting an unrealistically high bar for food that would quickly be lowered. The batter was perfectly fried but retained an astonishingly light, almost tempura like consistency. The chips (fries to you ignorant Americans) were perfectly crisp on the outside and moist on the inside, ultimately proving to be the best by a long shot of the way to may servings of chips I would eat during my week in the country. The half portion was nonetheless generous and seemed pretty fair for the happy hour price of 6 pounds (just under 10 bucks). My Edinburgh reared cousin bemoaned them for serving an apparently inauthentic tater sauce alongside it as opposed to a imo gross local traditional brown sauce topping , but I will leave those complaints to the locals. The bar itself was super chill, I only really had access to the funky ground level bar as a decent sounding garage rock band was rehearsing upstairs but the vibe was pretty cool. Some of the better microbrews I sampled while in the nation were offered on tap and the clientele salty yet gregarious, suggesting young spiritual descendants of some of the Leith hooligans fictionalized in Trainspotting, albeit hopefully a bit less out of control. Overall it hit a sweetspot for me, relatively hip and updated while retaining some distinct local flavor.

Yelp
This fab new bar is another amazing addition to a number of bars springing up in Leith lately serving craft beers, comfortable atmosphere and great food. Tonight I sampled the menu. Shared two platters which were filled with interesting and tasty cheeses, chutney, dips and loads more. And really good value for money at just £6 & £7 per platter and no extra charge for more oatcakes and bread. The rest of their menu hosts lots of varied and interesting options with plenty of fish and vegetarian dishes - definitely a step up from standard pub grub! The Depot is also a music venue with a wee room upstairs for bands to play... quite cosy upstairs but a great vibe. Can see this place fast becoming a regular haunt for me!

Yelp
I've walked past Leith Depot a couple of times but thought it was just a bar. Well it's not 'just' a bar - it's a smallish bistro style restaurant. You can go here and have a decent plate of simple, tasty food at a reasonable price as well. The menu is not massive, which is probably a good thing - also it has some vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered the chimichurri chicken which was nested on a salad of sweet potato, feta and cashew nuts. It looked so good! I'm happy to report it was divine - I couldn't fault it. The waitress came over to explain the dessert menu so I decided to try the carrot cake. Again, it was amazing - just perfect. Not a crumb left on my plate. I'm pleased to see this new addition on Leith Walk and no doubt will be returning again!

Yelp
We're always up for trying a new place to eat in Leith so we stopped by the Leith Depot on a lazy Sunday post New Year celebrations. What used to be The Meridian bar has now transformed in a funky little bistro pub. The bricked up windows have been removed to reveal a bright and spacious interior. It's not a huge place, with seating for about 30 but these are nicely spaced and places to perch at the bar too. There is a good selection of beers on tap and bottled with the usual suspects,Brewdog etc, as well as wines and spirits. We settle at a cozy wee table for two. The menu is goood! Healthy and hearty food promising fresh produce. There are some great vegetarian options too. I go for the smoked tofu kedgeree and David the chicken with tarragon sauce. So far so good. Time ticks on, we don't mind waiting as the atmosphere is relaxing enough. However, after 40 minutes I am starting to get a bit peckish. I think we must have caught the kitchen staff just as they were reopening after the New Year. They must have not done any prep before opening. The food arrives and thankfully it is delicious! My kedgeree is so tasty, I am definitely going to try that at home. David's chicken was awesome too, it came with a HUGE pile of mash and a very tasty sauce. The chef obviously has a great palette. Would definitely give this place another go, simply based on the quality of the food. It was there first day back after New Year, I know what I'm like with an extended hangover! Cheers, Amy

Yelp
This place is great for so many reasons. The beer is good, the food is amazing and the staff are great too! I most recently had fish and chips here which was excellent with crispy batter, hand cut chunky chips and home made tartare sauce. I mostly have the cheeseburger from the lunch menu. Vegan and gluten free options are available too. The choice of draught lagers is great and backed up by varied bottles and cans from local breweries which change regularly. The woman next to me just got eggs benedict which looks and smells awesome. Generally quite chilled out but gigs upstairs in the live music venue can be busy and quite hot. The last place open in the building it occupies as they refused to be bullied by Drum property group who wanted to demolish the whole place and build student flats. The place survives because of the tenacity of the owners and the loyalty of the locals. Persevere.

Yelp
Went in for lunch with my step brother, I didn't have long as I had to go back to work ( boo). I work on leith walk so it was nice and handy and I had perused the menu on my way past a few times, looked tasty, and indeed it was. Very. I had whitebait follow by a smoked mussel broth and trout on top. Yum. My brothers mushroom soup looked amazing, I wasn't allowed a taste! And his chicken supreme with mash looked great, again I was not allowed a morsel! I will be going back soon with someone who will share their food. Massive improvement from the meridian as it used to be ( I never went in too frightened ) great addition to leith walk x

Yelp
It's three stars from me just now. I'm looking forward to getting to know Leith Depot a little better. We had been booked to play a gig at Leith Depot as part of the Leith Late festival. There is a small area for music with a bar upstairs, and the gig was free entry. There's some really great equipment upstairs. There's no sound person, so we were both essentially on both sides of the sound desk for the duration of the gig. If you've been this situation, you'll know that soundcheck can be a very interesting experience and levels must be adjusted throughout the gig. Sadly, the turnout wasn't too good, largely due to weather and, apparently, the same crowd had been on both Friday and Saturday night to listen to the festival's musical offering. Sunday was their day of rest so it seemed. We'd made a poster for the gig and sent it to Leith Depot but all that was on the doorway to upstairs was a handwritten note with our name and the time we'd start. - It would have been really nice to see our poster printed! Regardless, we didn't feel to bad that there weren't many people as the whole bar was the same way. I'd definitely like to get to know Leith Depot a little bit better as I really love the style of the bar and also that the whole of the upstairs area is dedicated to music. No doubt, our paths will cross again, LD.

Yelp
So happy to see Leith depot as an addition to Leith walk. I have been in for drinks a few times and had a great night in this lovely bar, the drinks selection is excellent and the make over is great.very cosy, welcoming and beautiful toilets too(not often I rave about toilets) Was seriously impressed by the food there. Came for lunch with family members and had a lasagne which was one of the best I've had in years, had a Smokeyness to the tomato sauce which made it stand out along with a large side salad with mini mozzarella. Really great stuff and just £7. My relatives had fish and chips and were very happy with their selection. Really affordable, delicious food. The people running the place have done a great job. The staff are pleasant and attentive. The chefs are excellent also. I look forward to seeing live music upstairs soon. Very grateful to have Leith depot as an addition to the walk.

Yelp
Ate lunch there, had the whitebait which was pleasant, if a little more bland than I expected, and the steak baguette which was the tastiest freakin' thing I have eaten in a very long time. Great value for money and the service was friendly and attentive. Will definitely make this a regular haunt.
