Lenny the Chocolate Moose – Scarborough, Maine - Gastro Obscura

"Lenny is an animal-sized tribute to chocolate, and to the state of Maine. A 1,700-pound behemoth, Lenny is a milk-chocolate moose, the star of an edible animal habitat hidden inside of Len Libby Candies, a chocolatier in Scarborough, Maine. Lenny’s pals are some dark chocolate black bears: 380-pound Mama Libby and her cubs, Cocoa and Chip, who are 80 pounds each. The sweet animals coexist happily around a blue-tinted white chocolate pond, in which Lenny stands magisterially, looking upon the store’s candy offerings. Lenny was created in 1997.  The sculptor commissioned to make him slathered milk chocolate over a moose-shaped wire lath, then carved and smoothed, toiling over delicious chocolate for a month until Lenny took form. A video documenting his creation plays on a loop at the store today. Eight feet tall and nine feet wide, he’s a true feast for the eyes. The animal habitat is fenced off: In chocolate form, Lenny and co. are endangered species and must remain situated next to the store’s ice cream station so they stay cool. The choice of star animal is probably an homage to Maine’s large moose population, second only to Alaska in the United States. Know Before You Go Since Lenny is located inside in the back corner of the candy shop, you'll need to visit when it's open. The hours are posted on the company's Facebook page." - e1savage, Collector of Experiences, hfritzmartinez, emerkel, ladyredtravel, nataliearmacost

Definitely one of the most fun places we went all week long. Chocolates were delicious and selection was wide and varied. Nice tourist items for souvenirs to take back home staff was extremely polite cordial and helpful. Got to see the world's largest Chocolate Moose he's really in there. This is a must visit place from. now on.

Google
We were the horrible tourists that showed up 5 minutes prior to closing(sorry, it was our only chance to get here!) but everyone was still super nice to us and very helpful. In addition to being an amazing candy shoppe that did stellar versions of the traditional favorites, they had a bunch of things I'd never seen before. Adventurous stuff too! Coconut curry cashews!? Okay, I'm in. And the "Dark Cup of Coffee" was phenomenal!

Google
This was a fun pit stop on our recent roadtrip. The chocolates and caramels were tasty. They gave out teeny tiny samples. We thought the prices were really high, but it is a tourist destination, so they are obviously doing okay. I made a small box of assorted chocolates so I could try a few things, they were all really good. The chocolate covered raspberry jelly was probably my favorite.

Jimm Jimm

Google
A vast variety of chocolates , the 4 ladies were helpful and very polite . At the far end they give out free samples . As it states Lenny was the only moose we saw :

I have been coming here since I was a child and it has remained largely unchanged. Lenny the life size chocolate moose is starting to show his age but he is still a joy to visit every summer. They have gotten rid of their ice cream station since my last visit and are pushing the bangor taffy pretty hard. In their defense, the bangor taffy is great and I pick some up each summer to take back to my office. I was hoping to get some maple sugar candy as well but that also appears to have gone the way of the ice cream. Service was friendly and helpful and my colleagues really enjoyed the taffy.

Google
Amazing place! Absolutely love the toffee and lemon zest bark! Everything else I bought is so tasty! Loved all the Maine gift shop items too.

Sam Locke

Google
Super friendly staff are more than happy to make recommendations. Definitely be sure to grab some Bangor taffy and peruse thoroughly — there’s an amazing selection here spanning sugar high to sugar free. Enjoy!

Google
Such a fun spot! Before you even get to the door you get to view some beautiful lavender covered w/ busy little bees. Then once you walk in, you of course gotta find the big guy, Lenny! Not only do they have Lenny but they also have so many other indulgent goodies!!! On top of that they have thee cutest souvenirs. I was able to purchase multiple things to create cute mementos and enjoy some sweet treats.

Yelp
Right off Rt1, so you absolutely can't miss this one! They have a massive chocolate moose, as well as other creatures to look at, so you have to stop in at least once! The chocolates are good, especially the truffles. There is always someone greeting you with samples to try, which is always nice as well. Definitely a fun place to stop if you are in the area, and a prime location!

Yelp
I love finding sweet shops when away! This place has SO much to choose from. From gifts to chocolates, you definitely aren't leaving empty handed! The staff was very friendly as well. I loved the life size chocolate moose they have on display! So cool!!! We will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
I adore this little establishment, and have done so since I was a small child. Yes it does hold some nostalgia for me, of course, but it's more than that. While they do have items made by others, a lot of their candy in the display case is homemade. They have some of the best chocolates I've ever had. Their peanut butter cups are ahhhhmazing! It's like a peanut butter sandwich, with chocolate ends ! They have the best almond butter crunch I've ever had. They have white chocolate almond bark, that I make the trip to Scarborough for alone! It's so dang good. My mouth waters at the thought of the candy they make here. We always used to stop and see Lenny while my dad bought chocolates for mom's birthday, anniversary, or for the holidays. I sure miss Neccos peach blossoms, but no worries, Len Libby's has some as well. I will say they are a tad different, but still crunch peanut butter wrapped in peach candy! The ladies that work the register, fudge counter and candy counter are always polite and sweet. Helpful but not a buzzing nat. If you've never been in, check them out. I will say that they are expensive candies. 28.99lb for their by the pound candy. However it's very very good candy. They sell a ton of other things, and Maine items as well.

Yelp
Great place to get chocolates and all kinds of sweet goodies for friends and family (and yourself!) The legendary moose that's made of 1700 lbs of chocolate was quite an eye opener!
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
Heaven for those of us with a sweet tooth! Of course you have to come here and see Lenny, the 1,700 pound chocolate moose and his little chocolate bear friends, but you also have to let yourself go wild and get an assortment of treats! Their famous Bangor taffy is addictive, and the white chocolate lemon bark is absolutely delicious. Tried a few of the homemade chocolates and truffles and loved them all. Go for some chocolate covered blueberries or whatever else catches your eye!
google avatar

Rosine G.

Yelp
Everything and everyone in this shop is lovely! Highly recommend tasting the Bangoor Caramels...THEY ARE SO GOOD! I don't even care for caramel. We will be back.

Yelp
Here's what you're coming to Len Libby's for: 1. Their needham ice cream (which is unlike anything else; for those from away, needhams are a statewide delicacy: it's a patty of mashed potatoes and coconut that's dipped in chocolate. AND IT'S FABULOUS TASTING [even though I don't really eat ice cream anymore, you should trust me on this one]). This is Maine-in-a-cone. 2. Lenny: the world's only life-sized moose made entirely of milk chocolate (weighing in at about 1,700 pounds); and, Libby: the black bear with her cubs, Cocoa and Chips, made entirely of solid dark chocolate (380 lbs and 80 lbs respectively). Apparently at some point this The Weather Channel's list of "20 Of America's Oddest and Most Amazing Roadside Attractions and Landmarks". It's quirky and I like it. Also, while you're here, grab some chocolate covered blueberries. Or some salt water taffy. Or some fudge. Or some peanut brittle. Or some maple sugar candies in the shape of leaves. Or some truffles. They've got it all, including souvenirs, trinkets, and doodads for you to bring back home to that relative who's never been to Maine. Sure, things are a bit expensive, but can you really put a price on Lenny, Libby, Cocoa, and Chips?
google avatar

Yelp
This is a must-stop place if you're int he area. And they're open long hours so there is no excuse that you don't put it on your travel list. Lenny the life-sized chocolate moose is about the cutest and coolest thing ever. And the fact that he's still standing and looking good is quite impressive!!!! This place has something for everyone. Salt water taffy, chocolate truffles and caramels, chocolate nuts, chocolate twinkies....the list goes on for miles. And the prices honestly are great given the ioruibs. In the city at the "trendy" places you'll pay about 4x as much for less quality chocolate and selection. You can even get jelly fruits and cute souveniers including blueberry syrup. It seriously has something for everyone. There is also ice cream that you can get and a cute little sitting area off to the side with tables which is great for if you're taking a pit stop like we were. Stretch your legs, devour some sugary goodness and heck, theres even a bathroom right there. The staff here was also the nicest and sweetest group of people ever. Every trip through Maine this will be on my stop list!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great place to pick up sweet treats, gifts and souvenirs! It's so much fun to go into places like this one. I picked up some maple syrup for friends, a lighthouse ornament, and there's no way you can walk away without picking up a few goodies for everyone back home... that is, if it makes it home uneaten ;) The life size chocolate moose is a sight to see. He's gonna be 25 years old soon, so I don't think you'll be tempted to take a bite LOL

Yelp
Delicious chocolates, cute Maine themed Knick knacks. Huge chocolate moose inside. Very friendly and helpful staff.
google avatar

Dana W.

Yelp
I mean, they have a giant chocolate moose! Love grabbing goodies here for all the holidays. Shop local! Totally worth it.
google avatar

Denise A.

Yelp
This is the place to get Needhams, handmade with fresh coconut with either milk or dark chocolate. These are just the best. Glass cases filled with every kind of chocolate confection imaginable, along with so many different sweets and ice cream. Great gift boxes are available along with other do dads. Quality, delicious chocolate with a long tradition. A great place to visit and shop! And you gotta see Lenny the Moose---just don't eat him!
google avatar

Glenn T.

Yelp
This has always been our go-to place for Taffy. It has always been great, and I was able to pick my flavors and quantity. No more! You are limited now to just the 8 oz boxes of assorted flavors. It appears this business has decided to replace candy items with non-candy gift items. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Lori S.

Yelp
I'm a choco-holic!! I have driven by this place about a million times and only have been able to stop by twice...that's probably a good thing! Anyways, I love the set up and the different variety of chocolates they have to offer. Their full sized chocolate moose is neat to see and don't forget to see the chocolate black bears behind the moose, too!! They always have the holidays covered and their Fall and Halloween items are too cute. I picked my own chocolates from their chocolate counter and the staff there are very nice. I tried their Needams - AMAZING!! I also tried their dark chocolate orange peel - YUMMY!! If you love chocolate, definitely stop here!!
google avatar

Madison M.

Yelp
So many candy options! This place was way bigger than I expected. We came for the life size chocolate moose, but found a lot of other great gems here. Note that they have a good selection of sugar free candies, both boxed and fresh. They also have various sections of the store dedicated to themed candies like a moose theme and a lobster theme. Everyone working here was nice and the prices were reasonable. I'd recommend everyone traveling through the area come here!
google avatar

Annette S.

Yelp
A quality place to buy scrumptious chocolate! Needhams ice cream is the best! 0nly wish they were open evenings in the summer.
google avatar

Helen Z.

Yelp
Stopped by to see the big chocolate moose. The shop is filled with candies, chocolates, and nice gift ideas and souvenirs. We tried samples of the Bangor taffy and it was so good I got a box, as well as a cute moose shot glass. The chocolate moose himself is an imposing figure and he's very photogenic. There is also ice cream available. We misunderstood a review and asked the girl if the needham ice cream was really made of mashed potatoes, and the outcome was embarrassing and hilarious for all of us.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
I love odd roadside attractions so when I came across pictures of Lenny the chocolate moose, I knew we had to stop! 1700 pounds of chocolate?! I'm not passing that up! The area in the store where Lenny was smelled like chocolate heaven. We ventured through the store and each found a few souvenirs. I ended up with the most delicious chocolate covered raisins and a book to send my nephew. There was SO much to choose from that I had a hard time narrowing it down. Great roadside attraction to stop at if you are ever in the area!
google avatar

Kimberly N.

Yelp
This was a really nice place, came to see the giant chocolate moose and get some goodies for the road. Everyone who worked here was super friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Becky D.

Yelp
Definitely a must see while in the area! It's off of a main road. The parking lot is small but it doesn't seem to be an issue. The staff is incredibly friendly and quick to help you. The prices are relatively decent, especially for the area. The moose is awesome! It's made 100% of chocolate and there is also a chocolate bear. They have quite a variety of candy (mostly chocolate). They have little knick knacks and other souvenirs.

Dd L.

Yelp
Absolute delight of a spot. They have everything you need from chocolates of every kind to candies and ice cream. A Maine must.

Aaron L.

Yelp
My 8 year old found Lenny the Chocolate Moose in a "Weird but True" book and declared that she would like to go see him when we were in Maine! As luck would have it, we were close by and made a stop. She was thrilled with the Moose, but we were thrilled by the tasty chocolate treats that we found in the shop!
google avatar

Skye L.

Yelp
Cute little candy and gift shop! The ladies in the shop are so friendly and welcoming. You can sample the candies. They have nice little trinkets all throughout the store. There's also a life-size chocolate moose, bear, and bear cubs! Cool! The chocolate and sea salt Oreos were a sheer delight. The cars salt caramels Omar's perfect. The creams were a little too sugary and not creamy enough for my taste. Fun stop!
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
Came here because I overheard some people talking about it while I was at the Portland Head Lighthouse. So I immediately looked it up on Yelp and saw that they had a 380lb. chocolate Moose. It's located on Highway 1 and pretty easy to spot. Just be warned that tour buses frequent this location, so it can get super busy. They do provide samples of their chocolate. The chocolate is tasty, but I don't know if I can say it's the best. At this point, I can't really tell to be honest. But, it's a nice stop over for a sugar high. They also have pre-packaged chocolate items out on the floor. They are the same ones you find behind the glass case.
google avatar

Fides M.

Yelp
I would give this chocolatier 10 stars! What a classic. I finally made my way to this place after wanting to go for so long even though it's only a few minutes from my summer home. I thought it is similar to our See's Candies shop out West but to my pleasant surprise, it was so much more! The delectable goodies existed aplenty! Chocolates and candies were beautifully presented! ! I made sure I tried several of their unique offerings. I particularly enjoyed the chocolate-covered potato chips, coconut marshmallow squares, traditional cashews, chocolate Oreo cups, and colorful fruit candy slices. There are also Maine souvenirs of all kinds: books, puzzles, shirts, home wares, decor and such. The cashiers were friendly and knowledgeable! And of course where can one see a giant moose chocolate in real life size! Only in Scarborough!
google avatar

Mollie C.

Yelp
Private lot. The main reason to go here is for the chocolate moose. I wouldnt consider their chocolate to be a must have delicious treat. Its average chocolate. Although I did really enjoy their chocolate rocks. They have a variety of other candies too like rock candy and jelly beans. Cute shapes of chocolate like lobsters and moose chocolate filled baskets, so great to stop in for a gift to return home.

Jessica A.

Yelp
When I buy souvenirs, I am very particular because I don't like clutter. I tend to gravitate toward locally-made foods and products because they are consumables. I knew when we visited Portland that I wanted to get some Maine blueberry items to take home with me, and I'd read about Len Libby candy shop in the Portland travel guide I got at the airport. I just knew we had to go see this life-sized chocolate moose! The shop has plenty of parking and the inside is so welcoming and full of goodies. I wanted to take everything home! I love that they organize items by theme, so all the blueberry items are together, lobster in another, moose, and so on. They've got gifts in all price ranges, so I was able to get little chocolate items for my family and larger items too. I love the variety of items. I bought a locally made blueberry muffin kit with canned Maine blueberries (just like my grandma used to make with us) and the Blueberries for Sal book she used to read to us as kids. The chocolate counter is wonderful. Lots of choices and I had a hard time narrowing it down. This was my favorite shopping stop of our whole trip and it's on the way out of town to the airport. Can't wait to make my muffins this weekend and remember our trip!

Yelp
It's impossible! You can't get away from this great local chocolatier without buying a little something. I know, everyone talks about Lenny in their reviews, and yes, he's quite impressive. But, check this out: there's something for everyone here with a sweet tooth. We visited in late December, so there were lots of holiday themed treats to choose from. We grabbed some peppermint malt balls that are superb. It's hard to pass up the impressive display of fudge, with many great flavors. We built a custom box of three different flavors. I don't like nuts in my fudge and was happy to know most of the flavors come with and without. On check out, we noticed a sample of Bangor Taffy, which are cubed caramels coated in powdered sugar. So great we got a box! Then we wrapped up with one chocolate each from the case. My wife got the white chocolate caramel latte, my daughter got a chocolate caramel marshmallow, and I had to have the maple cream. They were exceptional! I'm a former chocolatier, and I was impressed at their chocolate skills here at Len Libby. A must visit spot in southern Maine!

Yelp
A very tasty moose Len Libby is a candy shop that is a bit different than your ordinary chocolate type of store. In fact it is very different from any place I have ever seen. Sure it has a whole lot of cool chocolate of all kinds. As well as salt water taffy and lots of different nuts. Also has syrups and other blueberry things that Maine is famous for. The usual assortment of souvenir trinkets are sold her like fridge magnets, crummy t-shirts and stuffed animals, frequently with a lobster theme, But what really makes this place unique is Lenny, the 1,700 pound solid chocolate moose they have on display. They have also added Libby, a 380 pound bear as well as her two 80 pound cubs, Chip and Cocoa. A bizarre sight to be sure. The town of Scarborough is filled with lots of weird stuff if you take the time to look but Lenny is special. Worth stopping in just to see him and his friends. Of course all the great chocolate and other tasty things aren't bad either. Just make sure you don't try to take a bite out of Lenny because he does look pretty delicious, especially to a chocoholic like myself. I was tempted but did manage to be content with just looking and drooling.

Carlos J.

Yelp
We dropped by here on 6/17 after seeing a small advertisement in a pamphlet my coworker and I picked up at a Maine visitor information center. We just *had* to see Lenny the Chocolate Moose. When we approached the place, we saw a sign that said free ice cream for all fathers on Father's Day. I expected a little wimpy cone, but was surprised by a full-sized cone with a generous scoop of maple walnut ice cream that was amazing! We bought some candy there to hold us over during the drive back to Boston. The people behind the counter were absolutely wonderful!
google avatar

Debrin S.

Yelp
Small. Varied chocolates, taffy, novelties. Touristy. Huge chocolate moose is apparently an attraction. I felt they were quite pricy.

J Z.

Yelp
My wife wanted to stop to see the large chocolate moose which is now 20 years old. We did. The. Bought some candy for us and our son. Also bought a small gift for friends. Chocolate prices are outrageous at $22-26 per Pound. Nice shop, the prices bring the experience down to 3 stars.
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
The candy from Len Libby's was pretty good, but nothing that special that I tried. However, the main attraction here is really Lenny The Chocolate Moose, who was made with over 1,700 pounds of chocolate (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/len-libby-candy-shops-scarborough?select=qrfXhrz_94RTlKt2KIF2Ug#-NtWwPmy6lT9Mgx8mFpuPQ)! They added a few chocolate bears recently, who were made from a few hundred pounds of chocolate each (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/len-libby-candy-shops-scarborough?select=qrfXhrz_94RTlKt2KIF2Ug#omGVF7DKff2Q0gRWYuGXSg). They also offer a bunch of free samples in the store, and I got to try their Bangor Taffy and Maine Wild Blueberry Cluster. The bangor taffy was good, but really sweet. The blueberry cluster wasn't as sweet, and was chock full of blueberries. They have their own parking lot, so it's worth it to stop by for a quick look if you're driving through!
google avatar

Chie Y.

Yelp
My husband took me to see LENNY the chocolate moose and it does not disappoint! Damn thing is huuuuuge! I wanted to reach out and break off a piece hehe. Chocolates are pricey but really good.
google avatar

Joe D.

Yelp
How may I get a 1700 lb chocolate moose on the top of my car? What a conversation piece that would be, and the ride home would smell wonderful. Great store, with friendly sales folk. You have to watch the video on how the moose was made; it's interesting and funny. We picked up some chocolate and peanut brittle too, and it only made it as far as the hotel. Wife says brittle is good and I'm gnawing on the delicious chocolate now. Found this store because of a ME visitors guide, and we're glad we did.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
The candy here is a little too expensive for anyone who doesn't have money to burn. But it's a big place, kind of like the Putnam Pantry in Danvers, MA. And it's open until 9 PM in the summer. Cool hours. And they have Lenny the moose. You just have to see Lenny the moose. Maybe the blueberry soda isn't too expensive. Maybe buy someone a gift certificate. I guess the specialty candy is the "Needhams". They also have ice cream. I think they make a "Needham" ice cream.

Dineen G.

Yelp
Excellent chocolate and a great place to take the kids to see Lenny the moose crafted in chocolate.
google avatar

Paula B.

Yelp
The chocolate moose is pretty fantastic as are the chocolate bears. All kinds of unique handmade products available. The chocolates are very tasty. Fun place to visit on your way down the coast. Be sure to take a selfie with the moose!
google avatar

Barbara K.

Yelp
Very sad !!! Drove many miles to see the chocolat mouse. Turns out they put a hat on the poor thing to celebrate his birthday last month and refuse to take the hat off. Not even for European guests to make a awesome picture of the massive chocolat structure.

Ali L.

Yelp
Cute place, lots of nice candies, moose is a pretty photo op. The Maine Taffy samples were EXCELLENT. Like that they have a working 100 year old taffy puller. REAL Salt Water Taffy made here. Not too much in the sugar free area and I'd love to see salt added stop the SF chocolates. There's a nice bathroom outside and gas station across the street FYI. It was worth the stop.
google avatar

Santi T.

Yelp
Moose crossing! If you want to take a picture of a life size chocolate moose, come here! It's hilarious but so worth to take a photo op! (sorry mine got deleted! arg!) The prices of the edible Maine souvenirs were pricy, but the chocolate moose made up for it! There is plenty of free parking and the staff was pleasant. If you are interested in purchasing some gifts to bring home, consider the blueberry and maple salt water taffy which were reasonably priced.
google avatar

Kathy D.

Yelp
I really do love Len Libby!! But..I must agree with Chester O.!! This place is insanely overpriced! My Mom works in a candy store that makes fine chocolates and this place is just way over the top with prices! My favorite candy here is the huge chocolate malted milk balls. But, come on.. $7.95? There is about 12 balls in there! That's just absurd! In today's economy you really need to think about coming down on your prices. I'm not saying it's bad chocolate by any means! Because..it's not! It's fantastic! I don't think it's worth the price!...Period!
google avatar

Katie O.

Yelp
This place is amazing! There are so many options to choose from with chocolate selections, truffles, fudge, and so much more. I've gotten Christmas and valentines presents here, and they do not disappoint! They even have a great selection of sugar-free candy for the type one diabetic's in my life. The chocolate ships great - I sent some to friends in Iowa and they arrived in good shape. And, I'm always impressed with the life-size chocolate moose and bear cubs on display! The staff are helpful and friendly, and lines flow fast. This is a must stop shop for all locals and tourists alike!
google avatar

Ammu K.

Yelp
Want to see the world's only life-sized chocolate moose? Check it out by stopping here on your way into or out of town. We stopped in and left with some chocolate covered oreos (yum!) and dark chocolate covered pretzels (to die for!). A little pricy, but that's expected. The staff were very kind.
google avatar

Darya S.

Yelp
Smart of them to use the chocolate moose to attract out-of-towners. There is a video that shows how the chocolate moose was made. The moose renders this candy store a tourist attraction. Without it, it's your average candy store with very sweet employees (not that that's a bad thing!). Road trippers should enjoy picking up some dark chocolate pieces or ice cream to munch on in the car. I tried the salted caramel piece and the dark chocolate piece. Yummy.
google avatar

Cindy O.

Yelp
We have been coming to Len Libby for years. First trip back to Maine in 7 years. Len Libby's is bigger and busier! They now sell salt water taffy - pick it yourself in barrels! Very, very fresh. I may never go back to the other candy store in OOB! Lots of chocolates. Novelties such a lobster gummies. Great place to pick up your edible souvenirs! Prices are about average for a candy store, but most items are probably made onsite, so that is worth paying for. We did not try their ice cream so no rating for that. Serving ice cream is also a change since we were last there!
google avatar

Ezra B.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped at Len Libby's en route to Portland. As a chocoholic, I was very excited to see Lenny the Moose, and it was pretty neat! A giant, chocolate moose. How very Maine! We took photos with Lenny, and tried some of the chocolates as well. The maple-filled chocolate were awesome, and the other chocolate-covered items were delicious. This place is definitely worth a stop!
google avatar

Shannon K.

Yelp
Great stop if you are trying to maximize road side attraction photos for your vacation. Lenny the Moose and his bear and cubs friends make for great photos and, frankly, smell divine. We grabbed a small piece of fudge and a couple chocolate for the road. I didn't find the prices as extreme as other reviewers; yes, the chocolate is more expensive than what you'll find on the shelf at the drugstore, but I found it to be more or less in line with similar speciality shops.
