Architect Soo K Chan explains his holistic approach to design - SilverKris

"A historic Chinese clanhouse in Penang and UNESCO World Heritage Site characterised by long, narrow houses opening onto air wells that admit light and rain; growing up in this compound fostered a sensitivity to natural elements and the interplay of light and darkness, shaping an approach to spatial choreography that considers how light, sound and the elements influence users." - Rachel Eva Lim

Khoo Kongsi is easily one of the most impressive clan houses in Penang. The place is big, beautifully restored, and very richly decorated, showing just how wealthy and influential the Khoo clan once was. From the moment you step in, the details really stand out. The main hall is the highlight, with intricate carvings, gold-painted beams, and colourful panels covering almost every surface. The craftsmanship is amazing and gives a good idea of how grand a Chinese clan house could be at its peak. There’s also a basement exhibition area where you can learn about the history of the Khoo clan, how they settled in Southeast Asia, and see “walls of honour” highlighting notable clan members over the years. Definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in Penang’s heritage.

Overall, it is a well maintained compound. I paid Rm15 as a foreigner. I observed there are english speaking tour guides available. I think this will add to the richness of the experience and to receive deeper insights into the Khoo Clan and its history in Penang. Highly recommended. Entry ticket is a sticker u have to paste on your clothes. Lucky for me, they had a lion dance performance by students. Only today!

It's famous for being one of the most opulent and highly ornamented clan houses outside of China. Visitors are often mesmerized by the intricate details, including: • Elaborate carvings and sculptures on the walls, columns, and roof ridges. • Richly decorated beams and ceilings. • A blend of traditional Chinese and Southern Fujian architectural styles. • Historical and Cultural Significance: The complex offers a deep dive into the history of the Khoo clan and the influential Chinese community in Penang. • The Museum: The museum section (usually located at the side and rear of the main temple) and associated exhibits provide valuable information on: • The history of the Khoo Kongsi. • The life and daily routines of former clan members (sometimes including mock-ups of living spaces and utensils). • The history of the Chinese diaspora in Penang. • The Grand Ancestral Hall (Leong San Tong): This main hall is a calm and peaceful space dedicated to honoring ancestors and deities, featuring a fabulous altar. • Overall Atmosphere: Visitors frequently describe the one-hour visit as an immersive cultural experience and a must-see for anyone interested in history and traditional architecture.

Lots of culture and history. The entry fee is MYR 30 and you’re free to wander on your own but there is an English tour every hour or so lasting about 30min. There are about 2 or 3 souvenir shops inside — decently priced but you can get most of the items cheaper on the Armenian street. Inconsequential, but I would have loved a hello from the staff selling my ticket. It’s a small thing but everyone else in the country has been very polite and always says hello and thank you so it’s noticeable when someone doesn’t do the same.

Visiting Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi felt like stepping into an intricately carved time capsule hidden in the middle of George Town. Even before entering, the entrance lane created this quiet sense of anticipation — almost as if you were being pulled into a private world the city keeps tucked away. You’ll probably find yourself slowing down without realizing it, taking in angle after angle — the dramatic staircases, the sweeping roof curves, the delicate lanterns. Every corner looks like it was designed with a photographer in mind. Khoo Kongsi isn’t just another heritage site — it’s one of those places that feels special the moment you step in. It’s intimate, powerful, and full of soul. Whether you’re a history lover, an architecture fan, or just someone who enjoys stepping into beautiful spaces, this clanhouse leaves a quiet but lasting impression.

Khoo Kongsi stands out as one of the most elaborate and complete clan houses in Penang. The complex is large, richly decorated and restored to a level that highlights the wealth and influence of the Khoo clan. From the moment you enter, the scale and detail are immediately noticeable. The main hall is the highlight, with intricate carvings, gilded beams and beautifully painted panels covering almost every surface. The craftsmanship is exceptional and gives a clear picture of what a powerful Straits Chinese clan could build at the height of its influence. The courtyard, side buildings and entrance gate all follow the same high standard, making the entire site feel cohesive and grand. There is also a small museum area with clan history, migration stories and cultural background. The information is straightforward and helps put the architecture into context without overwhelming the visitor. Even if you have visited other kongsi houses, Khoo Kongsi remains the most striking in terms of decoration, scale and atmosphere. It is a key heritage stop in Georgetown and is worth setting aside enough time to appreciate the many details that cover every corner of the complex.

Very cool and unique architecture and design, it's truly beautiful. It's a small fee to go see, but there isn't that much to see. It's not very big and you can do it in like 20 minutes. Only a few signs with information to read. They did give a little booklet as part of the ticket fee which was helpful.

Google
Highly decorated building compound that still serves as the office for clan affairs. You can learn through the history of the Khoo clan and how they settled and grew in Southeast Asia. It also includes a few 'walls of honour' showing achievements by memorable clan members throughout the times. Some food of thought on this, that the people presented in these halls are strictly male only, and only those of 'respectable' careers (doctors, lawyers, PhDs etc.). This is not a criticism of the Khoo clan but a general issue of Chinese clan/family traditions across the world. As we are well into the 21st century, should we continue to ignore the female gender? And is it appropriate to ignore those who achieved respectable careers without a doctorate or law degree?

Yelp
The clan temple was the highlight of the visit to the clan compound. The main entrance was off of Beach St. a small tunnel was filled with introductory storyboards to the clan, history and of the buildings themselves. The tunnel opened up to a a row of clan houses that were all undergoing renovations. Peeking inside looked to be very modern decor. The ticket window was in the last house. A sticker was provided as the ticket and just had to be visibly placed. A small altar was accessible after entering the compound. An open air stage was located across from the clan temple and was also elaborately decorated. The main star was the clan temple. On the first floor was a kitchen and the museum portion that contained the chronology of the Khoo clan from its founding, details about the temple construction and features plus more. Upstairs were multiple rooms each with their own altars and overall were ornately decorated with carvings, paintings and engravings. The veranda also was amazing with similar attention to the decor and styling. Do look up to the ceiling and the roof too outside as nothing was overlooked with the attention to details. A must see in my opinion when in Penang.

Yelp
To the person I once overheard say "you've seen one temple you've seen them all." How terribly wrong you are. This temple is a Chinese clan temple whose linage goes back 650 years. It may be easy to walk by, but be sure to search it out. There are three simple alleyway entrances, Beach Street, Armenian Street and Cannon Street in southwest Georgetown. I used Cannon and got a great deal of information from signage as I walked in. There is an admission fee. Well worth it. The temple itself is surrounded by the clans' terrace houses and shops. When you see the opera stage, walk around it and the temple will appear. Again, like the Jetties, these are people's homes. It is only open during daylight hours. The temple has many incredible features. There are six octagonal granite pillars, simple, not carved as others. The main trusses in the Prayer Pavilion are carved with animal motifs. The Pavilion also has a grand staircase. This temple has carvings of green, white and pink stones. The four huge etched murals are unique to this temple. And there are seven smaller murals in the rear corridor. Again, not all temples are a like. I spent well over an hour here studying the pictures and materials and checking out every corner I could find. Highly recommend. Walk in, no car.
