Why You Should Eat Soufflé in France—And Where to Eat It - AFAR

"In a contemporary seventh-arrondissement bistro, diners are treated to theatrical, made-to-order soufflés—notably a pineapple-lychee version developed by 23-year-old chef Julia Sedefdjian—presented with flourish by owner David Bottreau on a bamboo tray alongside a single scoop of sorbet. The dessert arrives with a crisp golden puff over a piping-hot ramekin; piercing the top reveals a cream-colored molten center that, when mixed with the sorbet, delivers a hot-and-cold, sweet-and-tart, ethereal experience. The soufflé’s success hinges on precise timing and technique—from perfectly whipped egg whites to the temperature of the crème pâtissière—and must be served within minutes of leaving the oven, a trait that adds to its drama and charm." - Lindsey Tramuta

The foods were great and the waiters were very polite. The Michelin star recognization was not showing until you will not aware if you not look around at cashier counter. The funny part was, I ordered 2 sets 5/6 courses(I can’t recall) and feel just full after dining, however, I was told that I might order the menu supposed by sharing; the food portion just fine for single Asian perhaps. Feel sad now as I notice the restaurant is temporary closed, hopefully the restaurant is close for renovation! The restaurant is worth to plan a trip to Paris just for having a great dining.

We came here for Lunch menu, starter is the pulled beef with veggie stock, It is tasty but I am not amazed by it. Main is the steam cod. The cod is very soft but It seems a bit under seasoning. The sauce is nice on the fish so I think it is still good. Cheese bread as the welcome dish is a bit boring that I agree with. Service is good, staffs are warm n friendly.

Google
For a 1 Michelin star restaurant, their 3 course 28 euro menu is an absolute steal! It won't blow your mind, but it's a fantastic value for the calibre of meal you get. We had our meal outside, but I must admit that service was mediocre and the place seemed to be swarmed by Chinese tourists - there was also a large Chinese tour group that had booked off the majority of the restaurant. Overall, the meal you'll get is great for the price, but based on the overall food and service, it's a good restaurant. Would have liked to see other items available on their prix fixe menu so I can say how other dishes were. But I thoroughly enjoyed the tomato appetizer and the squid ink with lardons and cuttlefish greatly!

Google
A French restaurant. The food is well prepared and presented. The taste is above average, but not surprisingly meets what I expected. The service is good. Staff are polite and can speak both French and English. A couple of small downsides. The air conditioning is not very strong. We really feel hot and just want to finish and leave which doesn’t make a perfect experience. The space between tables are very close. I would give 4.5 stars if I have choice. But 4 stars is on the lower side. So I give 5 stars.

Google
Great restaurant. The food is good compared to other one Michelin star restaurants. The food both taste good, and look good. The dining room is very elegant and modern. The service is good also. The lunch menu is very inexpensive.

Google
Food was great, also the service! We had the lunch menu, everything was amazing with details. The fish was well cooked and the sauce with it was like heaven! I’ll definitely come visit again!

I have been going to a lot of restaurants in Paris lately and I can honestly say this was one of the best ones I have been too. The quality of the food was great and rich in flavours. The staff was very friendly and especially attentive to my diet restrictions. Although this restaurant is slightly more on the expensive side it is definitely worth the money! Would definitely recommend 10/10.

Nothing spectacular... grilled fish with sesame tasted so bitter because the skin was too burnt. The chocolate fondant dessert was very underwhelming too. Service wasn't good as well... waiter was about to serve our main courses when a customer approach him to make payment. Instead of serving us our dishes first, he placed our dishes at the counter and proceeded to settle the payment for the customer. Bread was topped up at other tables except ours.

Yelp
We enjoyed the loveliest dinner at Les Fables de la Fontaine recently. Arriving to a very full and bustling restaurant and staying until we were just about the last ones here and things were quite quiet. The four of us shared two orders of the fresh daily fish special for two, and it was spectacular. I ordered the burrata salad to start and my three dining companions ordered the crab salad. The fish was perfect and presented to us for viewing whole, prior to our servings arriving minutes later. The side mushroom veggies were divine. We shared a perfectly pairing bottle of white wine over dinner and two of their tasty desserts. It was a wonderful experience and I'd highly recommend dining here if you love fresh Mediterranean food. The restaurant was casual and comfortable and service was good. I left feeling completely satisfied and not overly full even after having several servings of bread and butter ;)

Yelp
11.13.19 Fancy lunch time after visiting Eiffel Tower. My friend made reservations as she heard the food is very great and it's Michelin star. The server (the better looking one) that got us started was very nice. The other server however wasn't. I placed my bottle of water on the table and the other server told me I can't have that on the table. I wasn't even drinking it or anything. I just casually put it down bc I had it in my hands and was taking my jackets off. Yes, I had two jackets on. It was freezing ok. Anyway, we got the prefix menu. The nice server got us started with some water and some tiny, we believe to be, cheese bread. It was very good. Then we got some bread and butter. Friend's co-worker told her the butter is one of the best there. Um... Sorry but I need to disagree on that. It wasn't very good to me. I had way better butter in the US than those. In fact, I didn't like the butter, period. Then the first course was raw mackerel. So since I can't eat raw fish at the moment, I tried to get our server's attention. But the other server came so I told him why and if I can have it cooked. And he was like, "Did you not look at the menu? When it's marinade, it's raw." Well, excuse you! It never appeared to me that anything called marinade means raw. People marinade things before cooking it. How am I speaking to know you guys don't cook it before serving it? Not like it intricate on the menu. Thanks for your service. I thought that was very rude. The second course was cod. It was good. The dessert was good too, very interesting. I liked the sorbet. Anyway, 3 star to the nice server and good food. Minus 2 for the attitude of the other server and not so tasty items. You can't see It, but I just rolled my eyes.

Yelp
Lunch was phenomenal. Every dish was the right choice, the plating was beautiful and unique (especially the aioli de lieu and the la bourride), and the restaurant itself was peaceful and charming. The menu is a bit pricey but for the area and the quality, it's a no-brainer. The lunch combo is a nice option but it restricts you to a specific appetizer and main dish (though both were excellent). Plus their complimentary baguette and garlic bread were wonderful, which is never a bad way to start off a meal! Importantly though, every person at the table must order a main dish, so it's not the best place if you're just looking to share a dish or two. And the restaurant is quite small, so it may be hard to get a table without a reservation.

Yelp
Some friends and I went to Les Fables de la Fontaine for dinner because I found the restaurant on the list of "most affordable Michelin restaurants in Paris." Overall, the restaurant had a fun vibe than the food was delicious and affordable. Our hotel was able to snag us a reservation for five people pretty close to dinner time, and the restaurant was full. This street is packed with brasseries and restaurants, and I thought that there weren't as many tourists at this restaurant as there were at the others. (If that matters to you.) They have a three-course menu, per usual, but also the option to do a la carte for any of the dishes. That worked for our group well because some were more hungrier than others. The seafood soup was an all star, and beautifully presented in a gouged out rock. All the dishes seemed very appetizing, however the chicken entrée was the only dish that didn't exactly pan out. The wine list is on the smaller side, but still filled with enough variety that you can find something. The waiter worked with me to pick a great wine, and everyone was pleased with that aspect. Overall, the restaurant lived up to the hype of being affordable, and I enjoyed my meal here.

Yelp
A disappointment. Upon arrival slightly early for our 8pm reservation that we made a month in advance, my wife and I are seated outside in the wind. We saw the reservation sheet and there were not that many. Apparently most people were walk-ins, that they gave ALL the inside tables to. As we were reading the menu, a homeless guy walks up to me from my blind spot, sticking a cup in my face with his dirty hands. The restaurant did nothing to shoe him away, as he moved to the next couple. Food was average -- nothing special. Service freindly. As we were half way through our plats another couple sits down a table away. The guy, who I can best describe as a duche bag shoves the chairs of the ajoining table towards us to make more room for him and his girlfriend. I guess he thougt he was special. In general, for the hype and the cost, not an experience I will repeat.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants I've been to in all of Paris. Some friends recommended it to me when they visited so I figured I'd try it though wasn't sure if I'd be worth it. Worth the price point. Brought the family and everyone left pleased. We came for lunch and had the set menu. I'd recommend coming outside of peak time. We had to wait 15 min for a table even though we had a reservation at 1:30 pm. Come dressed up, but a sports jacket is not necessary. Waiters speak English but will speak to you in French if you want to practice. We got to meet the chef, who was kind and nice. It's a bit of a tight squeeze but that's normal in Paris. Nice ambiance. The fish was probably the best fish I've ever had, crunchy top and tender meat. We also had zucchini/squash with the fish that was also amazing, extremely tender but not over cooked. Dessert was chocolate/hazelnut with ice cream. I would come again for sure. Only downside was the wait for the table.

Yelp
Well on its way to earning a Michelin star, Les Fables de la Fontaine was featured in the 2018 Michelin Guide and it's well deserved. Take advantage of their excellent 2-course lunch time menu at 28 euros. The ambiance is lovely, the service is attentive but unobtrusive, and the food is an example of why you tell your friends it's such a treat to eat out in this city. Fresh. Seasonal. French.

Yelp
The best meal I had in France. It's a quaint restaurant, almost feels like a cafe and has seating indoors and outdoors. We ordered the perfect egg ( appetizer ), chicken ( mains ) and two desserts - lychee souffle and chocolate fondant. Getting started : They started off by serving some leek soup and cheese bread which was complimentary. Great combination. The regular bread that they serve was so accompanied with some fennel butter. The butter was perfectly flavoured and complimented the bread so we'll. Appetizer: The perfect egg comprised of a perfectly poached egg nestled amidst pea puree and lots of fresh veggies. Very unique. Mains: Moving to the mains the chicken was cooked like a patty and served with carrot puree, roasted parsnips and some tomato compote. Extremely delicious. Dessert: The highlight of my meal was lychee souffle served with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. Loved the texture, flavor, everything about it. The chocolate fondant was good too, but did not compare to the lychee souffle. Overall great service, and a delicious meal!

Yelp
As a seafood lover, my overall review of this place is a 5/5! I researched this place before coming to Paris, noting that it had a Michelin star and specialized in seafood. Service - Amazing! The servers were extremely friendly and food was brought out promptly. Food - First off I just got to say the attention to plating here is fantastic! Each dish is presented creatively and on some pretty unique dishes (ie. log, stone bowl). Seeing the dishes go by actually helped me decide what I wanted. I got the oysters, the steamed seafood in fish broth and the poached pear dessert. The oysters were amazing! The two sauces take traditional oysters to the next level without overpowering its natural sweetness. The steamed seafood w/ broth was served in a hot heavy warm stone bowl and wow, every single piece of seafood (at least 6+ different types of seafood from fish to squid to clams) were cooked perfectly. The only thing that could have been better was the broth. It didn't taste much like a fish broth and was too light to accent the seafood in the bowl. The dessert was a knockout. If I were to go again I would want to try the lemon tart, it looked absolutely beautiful. All in all, a fantastic experience and I would definitely recommend this place to my seafood loving friends.

Yelp
There are wayyy too many Michelin restaurant's in Paris and not enough time (or money) to try them all so I picked this one. We made a reservation via OpenTable for lunch because I read that it's by reservation only. It was a wet Saturday morning. Not knowing what was good we just ordered the Carte Blanche which is a 6 course meal. What we didn't realize was the price was per person so that was an unpleasant surprise. For some reason I thought it'd be individual size but shared between guests and if it wasn't enough you could just order more. The 6 courses were selected by the chef, but the waiter asked us which one we really wanted and they'd "advise" the chef. We wanted the scallops.....we didn't get it. In fact, when we got the check and added the cost of each dish we ate individually it would have been cheaper to order them separately. Establishment is small but very nice, servers are attentive and the free bread they refill upon request fills up the gap that the small dishes don't. (This is a late review from November 2017 btw)

Yelp
Excellent dinner at this one star Michelin restaurant. We ordered the Red tuna cerviche and the red beet with smoked eel. For entree we had the Steamed Fish with soup in a enormous stone and the sea bass with zucchini and tapenade. The rice soufflé dessert with caramel sauce was outrageously good! Service was impeccable and wine list right on with the menu offerings which is mainly seafood.

Yelp
We come from CA. USA & make a reservation on line for a special day today. We like the food here which is not disappointed us by the price, not only food hut also service is good. I didn't told them I'm allergy with milk I usually drink lactose-free. This the only thing regretfully after We have desserts. But I'm still fully recommend the pudding rice souffle'. The silverware they use is unique " Degrenne ".

Yelp
I ended up here by chance and ended up having a fabulous dinner. The space is small so reservations are a must. I loved the exposed stone walls with modern wood furniture-very chic and warm. I started with the calamari and butternut squash and the egg with raw and cooked haddock. Both dishes were incredibly unique and flavorful. They put down a small list of specials that was all fish and seafood dishes. I decided on the scallops. They were some of the best I've had. They came in the shells and had a nice side of barely sautéed spinach. A nice Beaune burgundy wine washed everything down nicely. I skipped dessert but next time id try their lemon tart. I'll definitely be back. It's also close to the Eiffel Tower!

Yelp
this restaurant was recommended by four seasons hotel because i requested to have a lobster. When we visited this restaurant, lobster was not served a Omar shrimp was served. But cocked Omar shrimp was excellent. There's a quite remarkable restaurant in Paris. Quite recommended.

Yelp
Cute place. Nicely decorated. We did the three course menu. I had the tuna cerviche. Didn't like it very much. Very sour. Both my sister and I had fish. Forgot the type of fish we had. But hers was very fishy. Mine was ok. We didn't enjoy it very much. The side dishes were good tho. Complemented the main dish. I love the rice pudding for desert. It was not too sweet and a bit creamy. Good price for a Michelin star restaurant.

Min C.

Yelp
A trendy looking restaurant known primarily for its seafood, this was my most recent Michelin experience. Started with a shrimp salad with guacamole and grapefruit. IN-credibly fresh and the super smooth guac had a slighttt nice kick to it. For the mains I tried roasted codfish with crispy polenta, virgin dressing and candied tomatoes. The fish was cooked absolutely PERFECTLY (actually perfect!) and the skin had a nice crisp to it without over doing it. The crispy polenta was basically a fried roll of polenta and I found it to be too big and lacked flavor. The other main was braised beef cheek, bok choi, and rosemary panisse. While the beef cheek was super tender, the sauce was a little underwhelming and the panisse was not very good (though that was my time having panisse).

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Paris. Look at the pics of the yummy food. So fresh, excellent preparation.

Yelp
A lovely, very reasonably-priced Michelin-starred meal by the Champs du Mar / Eiffel Tower. Les Fables de la Fontaine is well-known for their seafood dishes. We especially enjoyed their crispy egg yolk appetizer and cod fish aioli. The Asian-inspired beef cheeks were just alright. Their bread is lovely as well and comes out in a fancy setting. The restaurant is small but classy, with a homey but modern touch. Would recommend it if you're in Paris!

Yelp
I had been looking for a lunch place that wasn't terribly packed and wanted a light lunch. They had oysters smoked in hay- I was like wow- I have try. I said bonjour and asked if they spoke English, I asked for a table but I was ignored. No one was willing to seat me- no one was there. The restaurant is beautiful and in a nice corner. The gentleman and lady wasn't helpful.
google avatar

Shivam S.

Yelp
Excellent quality, taste and variety! The pricing is for a Michelin star restaurant is totally worth it. Tried the Chefs signature pollock aioli and mandarin bread pudding - perfect!

Yelp
This is a French gastronomy restaurant that specializes in seafood. The food was very interesting. The service was friendly and they were bilingual.
google avatar

Jam C.

Yelp
As a Michelin 1 star restaurant, it's really not that good. The price for prix menu is really cheap, costs 28 euro, but the appetizer, main course, and desert are disaster. It tastes really bad, the cod was not very fresh. Their service is good, waiters are friendly and speak English, but the food quality is just not good. I don't recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst service I've ever had, let alone from a Michelin Star restaurant. We were ignored and had to ask for more wine 3 separate times, our water was never filled and we had to ask for our check twice-the second time we asked I set a timer and we waited 18 minutes! We almost just walked out but our conscience got eh better of us. A true shame as the cuisine was AMAZING! Beautifully plated and unique flavors combined with excellent quality-the crispy egg yolk appetizer was truly wonderful. Not expensive-especially for finer-type dining. I'm not sure why we were treated so poorly...we aren't cheap and ordered an appetizer each and wine as well-we would have ordered more if we hadn't been ignored. We were the only americans so maybe that was it? I was so disappointed, I wanted the whole experience to be great-but the food was fantastic. We would've liked to have dessert as well but our dinner took us 3 hours so we went around the corner and had several delightful treats and after dinner drinks and had fabulous service. I won't ever go back to this restaurant, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Yelp
A rare treat. This tiny restaurant delivers a menu that is special in both presentation and taste. With each plate that was delivered to our group, the presentation was very well thought out and clearly an important part of the meal. For example, for one appetizer served to our table, it was caviar on a hand painted egg-shell filled with a delicious paste was just beautiful. You had to wonder if it was right to eat it or just bring it home. The ambiance was nice although the restaurant was a bit small. The service was attentive but not overbearing. With each course would come a short description of the item ordered and its contents. A nice touch! A rare experience.

Yelp
Trendy looking French restaurant. A little on the pricey side ($$$ or €€€) but not too unreasonable. Most a seafood based restaurant but also something for the meat lovers. I like strong seasoning so some dishes can used a little bit more flavor for me. Overall, the food was good, perfectly cooked, and well presented. I'm reading other reviews that says this is Michelin star, Michelin guide, or on its way to become Michelin star? Personally, I thought the food here was great but as great as many other french restaurant. I'm not sure if I can say this is Michelin star amazing. Nothing on the menu was innovative or outstanding. Presentation was well executed, though. I would return here to dine if I am visiting Paris again.

Josephine L.

Yelp
The quality of this restaurant does not deserve a Michelin star. Service, food and cleanliness (towels in the bathroom weren't very clean) were bad, although the atmosphere was alright. To be fair, the appetiser was just above average. We ordered the red mullet (though it was too salty), mullet tartar and crispy egg yolk. The latter two were pretty good, with the crispy egg yolk dish being the best. For the main course, we ordered the beef cheek, cod fish aioli, and roasted duck breast. The beef cheek was the worst. Rather than being tender and juicy, the texture was just like over cooked steak and the outside layer was burnt. The fish was bland and the duck was just average. A huge portion of the beef cheek was left on the plate and the server never bothered to ask why it was left untouched. It gave the impression that this happened quite often. Would not recommend this place to anyone. Absolutely not worth the Michelin title and the money.

Yelp
This meal was highly anticipated. The amuse bouche was nice, a zucchini chèvre spread and rye bread. My entré was the Salmon Carpaccio. My Salmon was warm and tasted old. Freshness was not present in the dish. The beef checks, however, melted in my mouth and the chickpea cake(similar to polenta) was a nice addition. Would I go back? Yes for dinner. Salmon can be a one off. So I give it a 4.

Christine W.

Yelp
Wow! The food was amazing and the service was great. I did not have a single dish that was a disappointment and I think it is fairly priced versus other nicer restaurants in Paris. I would recommend!

Yelp
Love it! Very small, cosy, living room like restaurant with Michelin star food quality. Not pretentious, just fantastic food. Normal menu is not cheap but still affordable, but if you want a great deal reserve a table for Lunch and get the Prix fix menu (around 35 Euro for 3 courses and a glass of wine, which is a bargain!)
google avatar

Yelp
Inventive gourmet cuisine, romantic and intimate atmosphere. Very good service.

Yelp
Loved the experience. The course was excellent and the staff were very professional and efficient. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Food is good but nothing blew me away. I find it a little expensive for the quality and amount of food. I enjoyed it very much but also found it a little repetitive that for a 7 course meal, both of the plats where fish and basically had similar accompaniments. Also bread was not very good. Wine was very nice. Service was terrible. The waiter was extremely nice but service was just way too slow. Then when we paid, who I believe was the manager, was very rude. He insisted that we payed 100€ short. We started counting the money and I was very apologetic and polite, but he just asked me to pay quick and leave because he had to close. We ended up finding a missing voucher (they lost it) and when we did, he did not even apologise for making us waste our time and he just said "ok you can leave now". He was very rude!

Allison S.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Paris. Delicious food and great presentation. We were surprised to find out that they just re-opened after months of renovations. Took us by surprise since everything was so perfectly executed. My husband had the crispy egg appetizer and beef cheeks for main course. I had the Niçoise salad and chicken for main dish. We both agreed the chicken was the star of the show. Absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Angelica K.

Yelp
We stopped by this restaurant by chance during our honeymoon. They were nice enough to call a "no show" reservation and get us a table last minute. You need reservations normally. This was, by far, the most amazing dinner of our entire trip and we planned a 2 week gourmet honeymoon. The food was creative, delicious and flawlessly executed. The bilingual servers were helpful and kind. The wine was paired perfectly. This is a Paris "must visit!"

Yelp
Ate at this charming little seafood restaurant in September 2008. It is market-driven, with the days offerings written on chalkboards. Everything was sparkling fresh and perfectly cooked. I remember that the crab dish I had was truly exceptional. The service was warm and helpful. Will definitely return when I am next in my favorite city on earth.

Yelp
We tried this very small restaurant on our first night in Paris and it was superb. I had the shrimp tempura appetizer and the salmon entree and they were really good. As we were finishing our meal, we saw that they were serving Dover Sole to another table and wondered "how did we miss that?"-(we apparently missed the last part of the menu), so we went back "solely" for the sole and enjoyed that meal more than the first night we were there. The service was impeccable. Can't wait to go back.

Habib A.

Yelp
The place has been refurbished so it does look better than it used to be. The staff are courteous and kind. However, this was my second visit and the food was not as good as it used to be. Anyhow this is my personal impression.

Guy h.

Yelp
Very good food, but very lax service. I had my fish on the table for five mintues before I had the wine to go with it. Each of the two waiters did not know what I had said to the other, with the consequent confusions. And when I left, no one said goodbye, or acknowledged my departure. But they probably didn't need to, because I wouldn't go back.

Chris S.

Yelp
A truly amazing meal. The food was interesting, delicate, great flavors. An artist was at work in the kitchen. The staff was more than helpful. Very pleasant. Lobster ravioli, was lobster claws inside of filo dough with a sauce that was out of this world. If you want a serious experience just sigh of Alan Ducasse this would be it.
