Les Hamaques, Near Sant Marti d’Empuries, Catalonia, Spain - Explore & Book

"Walking into this bijou guesthouse, with its whitewashed walls and boho stylings, is a little like walking into the pages of an upmarket interior design magazine. The house, a former barn, opens onto a garden filled with lavender, hydrangeas, magnolia trees and a pretty hidden lap pool. Hammocks are draped under trees, and a conservatory with exotic plants is the perfect spot for an organic breakfast. Inside, a high-ceilinged lounge has piles of design books around a modern fireplace, and various treasures collected by the owners on their travels. This is one of the most peaceful spaces we’ve seen in Catalonia. Tucked in the Spanish countryside, Les Hamaques is set in a tiny, quiet village, and is just a 50-minute drive from Girona airport. The bedrooms are light and airy with shabby-chic furniture, and the shared garden is sun-dappled and beautiful. Five km down the road you’ll find a beach, while dotted around the area are Crusader-era castles, boutique vineyards and medieval villages. In the winter, take strolls around the area and warm up by the super-stylish fire; in summer, wear a large-brimmed hat and flop in the garden's shade, or hang in the hammock and enjoy the breeze. Highs Close to the sea but in a peaceful rural setting; the best of both worlds in a hidden, authentic part of Spain Beautiful décor and romantic gardens; ideal for a restorative break with your partner Most rooms have private terraces or a slice of garden Good value for money and a great option for a whole house rental Lots of excellent restaurants in the region; the owners will advise and reserve tables for you Lows Only 5 rooms so very intimate and you'll need to book early No restaurant and you'll need to drive to reach local eateries Vildamat is a very quiet village; not for the easily bored We haven't yet met the current owners, Cathleen and George, but recent guests sing their praises Children under 14 not allowed; it's really a peaceful, adult retreat" - Laura Dixon

Gorgeous and private, this hit the spot for our 4 night trip. The hotel itself is authentically lovely, and personally styled with taste that I deeply admire. Plus loads of good books (Archetecture, design, and local stuff). I didn’t want to leave our room in the morning, the light was so beautiful in there. Surprised that I could not hear any of the other guests either, very private. The hosts were incredibly helpful (and thoughtful) It was our first time in the area, and their suggestions on exploring, restaurants and beaching were right on. Plus they made great breakfast spreads! Pool was perfection too. Simply, I didn’t want to leave.

What a delightful and restorative stay at this charming hotel. Easily accessible by train from Barcelona, grab a rental car and you can fully exhale 15 minutes later on arrival. Owned by architects, the attention to detail, style, and historic beauty combine to create a sanctuary. Just a few minutes drive to the beaches, towns, easy day trip to Girona for shopping, or stay right here, nestled away from city noise and energy to restore and relax. Fresh, simple, and filling breakfast of all that you can desire each morning served in a charming courtyard. This is one of very few places on the planet I want to return to again and again. Most importantly, incredibly comfortable beds and linens. Excellent staff and service to guide you anywhere you might want to go or have a chat over coffee. We will be back. Maybe we will never leave :)

We loved our stay at Les Hamaques, almost two months ago. Patrick and Cathleen were wonderful hosts and the property is beautiful. Ideal location in a quiet village, close to the beaches and historic places in the area. A place we definitely would like to come back to.

This is a very comfortable, charming hotel run by lovely hosts. Quiet village surrounding, biking and hiking nearby. Don’t expect nightlife, but for a peaceful get-away a gem.

We stayed at Les Hamaques in July of 2024. We enjoyed being in the middle of a beautiful garden setting where the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. The beautiful salt-water pool was a nice surprise as were the delicious breakfasts. The rooms were welcoming and comfortable, with luxurious and sophisticated touches everywhere. The warmth and hospitality of the owners, Cathleen and Patrick, made us want to return sometime soon.

Yelp
If Les Hamaques is full when you plan to visit, then do what we did and CHANGE YOUR PLANS so you can stay here. And if you plan to stay only a night or two, then be prepared to extend your stay or come back before leaving Spain. Walking into Les Hamaques is like coming home -- if your home were a peaceful, stylish retreat of understated elegance and French country charm in the Spanish countryside a stones throw away from a beautiful beach and stunning coastline and miles from crowds, traffic, and the stress of everyday life. Ino, Dominique and Natalie are the family you would choose if you could choose your family. They are kind and thoughtful with impeccable taste and grace, attending to your every need the way your best friends would - not because they have to but because they want to make you happy, comfortable and relaxed in their beautiful home. Need a massage after that long flight -- no problem, Natalie is amazing and the price is right. A drink more your style? The classic bar is all laid out for you to take what you want and just write it down to pay later. Relax in front of the fireplace? Check. A dip in the pool? Check. A lazy afternoon in the hammock? Check. Dinner at the local restaurants you didn't even know existed? No problem, Ino knows all the best places and will get you reservation when one does not exist. Dominique will tell you where to see the small villages without the crowds, and where to shop for antiques, local pottery, that perfect gift. Better yet, take home some of the the locally made, delicious smelling lotions and soaps from Les Hamaques or one of Natalie's unique and lovingly handmade decorations. We live in Hawaii, but Les Hamaques is truly Paradise. Do not miss it.
