New Luxury Hotel Is Opening in a Castle in Sancerre - AFAR

"Opening July 1, 2025, this is the village’s first luxury hotel, housed in a renovated 12th‑century château and initially offering eight rooms with nightly rates of $275–$385. Owners David Chicard and Audrey Dumont worked with Brussels designer Jérôme Lescrenier to preserve the castle’s asymmetrical layout and neo‑Gothic exterior while creating airy, contemporary interiors with midcentury furnishings and a nature‑inspired palette. Onsite amenities include a wine library in the château’s 12th‑century cellar, a wellness center with treatment and fitness spaces, and a 16‑seat pop‑up restaurant led by 21‑year‑old Top Chef contestant Arnaud Munster (reservations open June 11). The property places a strong emphasis on art and nature—hosting outdoor exhibitions in partnership with the Vasarely Foundation and showcasing works by Emma Terweduwe and Roan van Oort curated by Stanislas de Poucques—and has planned 2026–2027 expansions including more rooms, a permanent restaurant called L’Atelier des Cèdres, a permaculture garden, a landscaped pool and additional forest accommodations." - Opheli Garcia Lawler

An amazing night in this magnificent castle, perfectly renovated, with an amazing view of the Loire Valley. The castle is in the heart of the Sancerre village, surrounded with the wineyards which makes the place unique. The garden and its terrace, is astonishing and offers a great place for a walk. The staff has been especially welcoming and the 5 course diner at the Table d'Arnaud was an unforgettable experience. The room is very well equiped and very spacious.

My wife and I were looking to spend 2 nights in Sancerre and booked this hotel after our travel agent told us about it (the hotel just opened in July). This was our first time to Sancerre so we didn’t know what to expect. All we can say is - STAY HERE! We had an absolutely amazing time. The views are magical - you can see the whole valley. The view from the top of the historic tower at sunset can’t be described. The entire region uses the Chateau and tower as a landmark, so you can see vineyards, charming villages, mountains and forests with 360 degree views. In terms of the rooms, we learned that we were one of the first guests of the hotel when we arrived. The room was enormous and romantic. The staff (including Silva, Jennifer and Emma!) was friendly, warm and attentive. They made us feel like celebrities. Breakfast was delicious and they recommended a fantastic dinner spot (2 min walk) and wine tour with Lore during the day (a must do). We highly recommend this hotel!

In our opinion, this was an excellent way to spend a couple of hours, and was well worth the money. You have the most wonderful 360 degree views over the surrounding countryside, especially if you take the time to climb the many steps in the tower! The exhibition may not be to everyone's taste, but was, never-the-less, interesting and well presented. Their small gift shop also offered some tasteful souvenirs of the area. We would highly recommend a visit if you are in Sancerre.

We had a nice little visit here. Small park with the chateau and tower. In the chateau you can only visit the downstairs, with 4 rooms only used for art exhibitions. At the top of the castle is a nice view of the area. Bit expensive for the experience.

The Château de Sancerre offers a truly impressive experience for visitors. Upon entering the picturesque wine town of Sancerre, the château immediately stands out with its presence on a hilltop. Impeccably maintained, the castle and gardens provide breathtaking views over the surrounding vineyards and countryside. A highlight of the visit is the opportunity to climb the Tour des Fiefs, where visitors are rewarded with a stunning 360-degree panorama of the entire region, showcasing the beauty of the Loire Valley. Inside the château, a captivating exhibition dedicated to Victor Vasarely, the French-Hungarian pioneer of the Op Art movement, is beautifully integrated into the historic setting. The exhibition spans four rooms, each showcasing a range of Vasarely's works that interact harmoniously with the château’s architecture. The Château de Sancerre is a must-visit destination, combining history, art, and stunning scenery. It offers something special for lovers of wine, art enthusiasts, and those who appreciate French heritage.

A real gem in one of France’s most beautiful villages. The park and the Fief’s tower offer a fantastic 360 degree view over the world famous vineyards and the Loire valley. A must when you’re visiting the region.

A magic place in the heart of the beautiful village of Sancerre! The garden is simple but amazing and offers an astonishing view on the wineyards of the Sancerre Valley. The "tour des fiefs" stands to remind the rich history of the village. For sure, a place to visit when coming in the region.
