Like any relationship, things started off great. Our first meal was lunch and it was really good-rilletes de poisson and duck. Everything was fine. Our second visit was for dinner, we had a reservation and wanted to go upstairs but were strongly urged to stay downstairs, outside. We said we were worried about all the smokers (We have a 2 year old). They seated us about 9 inches from a chain smoking couple who proceeded to have a cigarette each every 5 minutes, without fail. Do not sit outside if you don't enjoy smoke in your face, al fresco means 'smoking club' in French. The food on that visit was fine, but not memorable either way.
Wanting to relive our first visit, we went back again. We insisted on sitting inside, upstairs this time and we mostly free of smoke, though remarkably the cluster of smokers downstairs managed to get a pretty good dose of fumes to come in through the open windows. The food was very mediocre. We had the cuttlefish, which were not finished, the scallop risotto, which came with four medium sized scallops and a very odd squid ink risotto which managed to be very thick without the pleasant creaminess of risotto. the dessert was a creme brule that was very unimpressive and not worth finishing, even between three of us. Just thick and goopy. Worse than the food, the service was unimaginably slow. Our waiter even acknowledged this and apologized at one point. But sitting for 2.5 hours for what was supposed to be a fairly quick meal was painful. It took 45 minutes from when we ordered our main courses to their final arrival. The tables around us were in even worse shape. By the time we left they were just getting their main courses, so they must have been waiting well over an hour from when they ordered.
But we have trouble letting go and wanted so much for L'etage to be our 'go to' place. So we went back again a week later. We made a reservation, showed up on time and were seated (upstairs, to avoid most of the smoke). Because we'd been there before, we looked at the menus quickly and knew what we wanted to order. We spent the next 20 minutes trying to catch the eye of our waitress who was so busy talking to other guests that she never made it back to our table. I mean not to bring us water, not to do anything. I even caught the eye of the other waiter, the older man, and he nodded at me, but never came. After sitting with our menus closed for 30 minutes, we gave up, packed up our stuff and walked out. No one said a word to us.
If you don't mind eating with smokers inches from your face, and you have a lot of time to spare, maybe L'etage will treat you right. Or maybe you'll get lucky like we did on our first visit. But being treated well 25% of the time is not a healthy relationship and there are too many other good spots in Annecy that deserve a chance. Sorry Etage, it's not you, it's me, and I no longer like you.
